Kanku-dai is one of the most important Shotokan katas, if not the most important. This video demonstrates and explains each move of the kata step by step in detail.

Well done, but if you're a beginner (since you said it's the 3rd kata you've learned) it's not really a good idea to start learning kankudai now. It would be better if you try doing some easier katas first.

at 1:51 there is one small detail left off, with the open hand you grab the opponents wrist and kick to the Elbow or ribs , the Grab of the wrist is a excellent move in MMA for example (In Heian Nidan for example you can Grab the Wrist and substitute a punch for the spear hand strike just as Kennedy did against Romero, my instructor taught to think concepts and not just blindly learn the moves and he was a 8th Dan). This explanation of the wrist Grab comes right from the book Karate Do KYOHAN. oss
@nicholasnj37789 жыл бұрын
***** Hikite is drawing back so then yes if you are grabbing the wrist and pulling and kicking although its more grab and control without the pulling in if you want to kick to the person elbow in an attempt to break the elbow or yes maybe pull in if kicking to the ribs in an attempt to break the ribs, it depends on what you want to accomplish, its all about self defense and amount of force needed ... think more in concepts rather rigid moves ... what is the right move for the situation , for example in the Kata Jutte/Jitte the hand goes up a certain way and repesents grabbing and taking a bow from an attacker, this could be a baseball bat in a street confrontation and you cant say hey wait my hand needs to go "this way" attacker so you are swinging it from the wrong side so when I break down the Bunkai with my daughter and with students in her dojo i swing the bow from both sides having them practice grabbing it and taking it ... oss

+Nicholas NJ Nice never recognised that until now. Thanks for the detail :)

At 1:51 there is nothing left out. I feel that it was your interpretation of the bunkai of that set. Remember you can have several version of the bunkai but the kata does not change.

Manjiuke: A throw in which you lift opponent's leg with one arm and drive him down with the other arm. Try it. With the so called palm heal strike to the groin....why would you do that? It is a groin grab or again, lifting his leg , dumping him on the floor.

In what way is this Shotokan Kata being done differently from others elsewhere, which even made the movements so seriously wrong that you wrote "many errors"? I had a look at this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ3LfmVqZ9epndE The one taught here looks the same as what I saw in the above videoclip. The other one was done at "competition standard" - I think it was a Kata Performance Competition - and so, was performed with full power and at a high speed, while here, it is being taught to students, and hence, done slowly and broken down into parts. But other than that, I see no difference between the two (or four...as there are 3 participants in the other video).
