The Main Highlight was Sivaji Ganesan couldn't even complete his primary education formally in a school. But in this film he gave a terrific performance as a Barrister exhibiting a typical well educated, intellectual lawyer's professional brilliance, ego, arrogance and contempt. And so contrasting was his performance in the role of his Son - downplaying it beautifully. Especially, the penultimate Court Scene in this film witnessing their arguments in an 'alleged' murder case ( where father tries to protect his client whom he already got acquitted earlier in another 'actual' murder case by his sheer arguing brilliance) and the son revolting against his father and trying to prove and implicate the culprit) needs to be watched by you and you may be able to understand the proceedings in that particular scene as some of the Dialogues were written in English. What was stunning was Sivaji GaNesan's diction and body language and his dialogue delivery in a typical Brahminical Slang though he did not belong to Brahmin Subsect by Birth or Growth. THIS detailed comment is to help you understand the background of the story & screenplay better. The Climax is father loses the case for his client and son wins the case getting punishment for the culprit. In the End Father dies unable to digest the Downfall to his Prestige (Gowravam) as he loses the case with his own son having countered him in the legal battle; however, the father gets the coveted post of "Justice" which remained his ambition & goal.

Sivaji did both roles only to accentuate the role of father who is full of ego. The role of the son is very much underplayed.. He is soft spoken, humble…Had it been portrayed by a different actor he would have tried to impress the audience which would have spoilt the essence of the story. Sivaji is the greatest actor one could ever see.

Micheal madana kamarajan by Kamal Hassan dons 4 roles was another classic.In the climax scene props like beard,moustache ,hair styles are removed and even dresses are made uniform. Kamal brought out. his amazing skills so that the audience could.identify. each one of the four personalities!

Glad to note your comments regarding Navarathri. Sivaji was a king in character differentiation, right from Uthamaputhiran (In fact it should be considered as rather 4 characters in that film instead of 2, since audience could recognise between transformation in disguise of Vikraman as Parthiban and vice versa, due to unknowingly revealing about the real nature of each character beyond one's control, howsoever tried, which is but natural (it was deliberately done by Sivaji wonderfully out of his imagination and deep thought, as once actor Mammootti narrated in a function honouring Sivaji). Audience could notice the real identity in Uthamaputhiran in between and even in middle stages of the film and there is really no match for Sivaji in subtle character differentiation till now, despite considerable improvement in film technology, Camera work and makeup expertise nowadays. Kamal's MMKR was no doubt a very good film with impressive performance by Kamal. But, in my humble view, the possibility of easy identification by audience despite uniform hairstyle, moustache, dress, etc for all the four characters (Quadruplets) was due to the fact that the concerned mannerisms of each of the Quadruplets were displayed frequently and repeatedly throughout the movie till almost final stages and thereby got registered well automatically in the minds of the audience. Hence in climax, audience could make out easily even the minor differences among the four. However, it was also a wise way of picturisation and I repeat that Kamal did a good job which was enjoyable. It's something like David meeting Goliath. Senior Sivaji is a very reputed and invincible barrister with an ambition to become a Judge having never lost a case. Nephew Sivaji brought up like a son by the senior, is the defense prosecutor making his first appearance in court against his beloved uncle. The uncle is furious as seen in the song. Nephew wins. The uncle dies unable to stand the defeat just as the nephew brings home the order appointing the uncle as a judge. Letting the protagonist lose and die is a suicidal move at the box office for South Indian films. So a double role for the actor where one character is successful even if the other is shown to fail. This may explain why a double role even if there are others who could play the second role.

Fantastic explanation of the movie story DD. Your analogy is right about the main character (protagonist) dying is NOT good for the movie box office. However, this is not true in Sivaji movies and he is a rare exception. There have been many movies cerca 1958 and later around 1972 where he dies in the movie. They all have been hits. Pasamalar, pachai vilakku, karnan, veerapandiya kattabomman, kappalottiya thamizhan, avanthan manithan, rajapart rangadurai etc., where there was only one role where he played the hero. As 2 or more heroes, his character died in en magan, theivamagan, navarathiri, bale pandiya, pudhiya bhoomi. All these movies were big hits except may be kappalottiya thamizhan which did run well due to tax free from government. That is about 10% of his movies in his prime. Vasantha Maaligai is the only movie, where they made the hero to LIVE instead of DIE for box office reasons. The reason for guaravam double role has been explained in a weekly magazine by Sivaji Ganesan very clearly. It shows Sivaji”s genius about the perception of the audience and the psychology of any actor who may have had to play second fiddle. This is what Sivaji said. The story will be excellent if the barrister uncle character overplayed and the nephew lawyer character underplayed. If he chose a popular hero for the nephew character, then he will NOT underplay and want to act to equal strength. Hence, he did not want to hurt the feelings of any other actor who will feel undermined. So, Sivaji Ganesan decided to do both roles himself so that he can underplay the Kannan character and completely dominate in the barrister character. In other words, Sivaji has always emphasised in contrast between multiple roles. Whether he played all roles or he played with others. He always had contrast for the movie to click. Major Sundararajan in theivamagan, gnana oli and asokan in karnan and uyarndha manithan and Srikanth in thangapathakkam and balaiyah in bagapirivinai and M.R. Radha in many movies are great examples. He always knew the pulse of the audience and changed cast or characters when he converted theatre play/dramas into movies such as Gauravam, Vietnam veedu, paritchaikku neramachu etc., Thanks and Cheers. Also, the contrast is eloquently done by MS Viswanathan, our favourite music director who always played P.Suseela in an undermined voice when she sings with TMS. She said this in an interview that a female voice should be toned down in order to project the combination of masculinity and femininity in a duet song. Thanks

@@dorodense I am glad you quickly found sivaji statement. It is evident because when he watched the drama, there were 2 different persons doing the barrister and nephew roles. It is Sivaji who decided to do the 2 roles himself. He used to buy out drama to convert to movie or decide someone to become a director (dailogue writer vietnam veedu sundaram became directore because of Sivaji. Ditto with Sridhar who became a producer and director with Sivaji encouragement. He completely dominated the cinefield where 20 great actors will act in a huge story like pavamannippu with a universal theme and make it a silver jubilee hit. No other actor had the guts or integrity or commanded the respect of all the other actors in cinefield like Sivaji did. So, it was easy for him and many directors, dialogue and story writers and producers flourished and gave many beautiful movies, thanks to Sivaji Ganesan determination, confidence, box office draw and the power to get financiers approval to fund a new project at the drop of a hat.

T.M. Soundararajan was a rare singer who had the talent of changing his voice to match the actors he was singing for, especially for Sivaji and MGR. Without even looking at the video, just listening to the songs, most old time Tamil movie fans can tell that it is TMS singing and who he's sing for, MGR or Sivaji or even some other actor as TMS sang for almost all actors of Tamil cinema. Many people say that the success of Sivaji and MGR can be attributed to TMS singing for them. In later years, when these two actors switched to other singers like S.P. Balasubramaniam or K.J. Jesudas, you can tell that their voices didn't match the actors, although these two singers were extremely talented in their own right and their singing was heavenly. But TMS was at another level due to the molding of his voice to the actors.
