I saw Kansas every time they played Phoenix and every show was amazing! Watching Steve run around the stage while singing those high parts then run across the stage to do hand stands on his Hammond sent the crowd crazy! One year when my ex wife was 8 months pregnant we came in the back door so I could deliver some guitar and bass strings and drum heads for the band we ran into Steve before the show and he invited us into the tour bus and we talked to Steve for about 20 min so my wife could sit in the air conditioning and relax before going in. He was most gracious and real personable. My son was born about a month later.

come on people quit bitching. The man is singing the most famous song his band has made, he is proud and doing what all musicians should, "play every show as if it is their last," nothing wrong with his tricks while playing his keys. He is so into it that he probably didn't know what was happening to him ask any musician who has been playing gigs for many years and they'll tell you great performances do things to you, plus it's not just a song but a freaking anthem.

You have to take in consideration during this time period many bands had "front men" that mainly sang and riled up the audience. I think Steve was compelled to do the same. Look at AeroSmith's Steve Tyler, Queen's Freddie Mercury, Bad Company's Paul Rogers, Poison's Bret Michels, etc. etc. Concerts became more than just the music. You had to entertain the crowd...and Steve Walsh became quite the entertainer!!! Not only did he write much of the lyrics and music, he sang his ass off, played the keys unbelievably well, played congas and kept the crowd wanting more!

I read some amazing things about Greg Robert. First, according to the article, the entire time he played with Kansas he had a broken neck. Second, he had never played keyboards until he joined Kansas. Third, after he quit Kansas, he went to work for a private company, like selling insurance. The guy is one incredible musician if all that is true!
@thebiddler69075 жыл бұрын
Lemme give you a little "insider info" on Greg Robert: 1. He has actually broken his neck twice in his life and didn't realize it during both times. 2. He HAD played keyboard prior to joining Kansas and was inspired to take up the keys after hearing Gregg Rolie live in concert in the 70's. 3. After he quit the band he went into the real estate business in the Atlanta area and was one of the top realtors in his region. 4. He also founded a charity called the Swansong Foundation that teaches autistic children and their families about the joys of sailing. 5. From 2015 to late 2017 he served his country as an Able Seaman with Military Sealift Command, a subcommand of the US Navy that resupplies ships at sea through a process called underway replenishment. 6. He currently lives in Houston, TX.

That was the whole reason for having Greg Robert in the band. He played most of the keyboard parts so Walsh could jump around like a madman. When he went back to really playing the keys it took him a while to get it back together and of course no more acrobatics!

He obviously lost it along the way, unfortunately.

The first video I ever saw was his younger days wearing just full length tube socks and yellow gym shorts. I was thinking with all that he HAD to be on drugs. But maybe it was all his moving around high kicking and such. But their older years, when they had the orchestra behind them, you could tell he sounded different doing the higher notes. Still an awesome singer and musician. I prefer Steve over the Elephante guy.

There is only two players left on the original band. One of them is the Drummer and the other is the heavy set dude Williams. All the rest are gone now. The other original guitar player Livren had a stroke in 2009. He was very lucky to have survived that one but it got his hands an vocal chords really bad. had the operation and they say he is pretty much recovered from it, but is not playing anymore. Walsh retired in 2014, 4 years ago. Elephante the violin player quit long time ago and also is not playing anymore. Everybody got burned out, got tired, some had medical problems and others went their way to the Church. It happens and on all bands of the 70's it is inevitable that they will quit. peace
@rickyon6 жыл бұрын
Daveyo, you have many facts wrong and should not even be commenting on this subject. Elefante was the lead singer and did not quit. The band broke up and he has been doing other things since. Many things! He is still performing and sounds amazing. Kerry Livgren had a stroke and has recovered. He never lost his vocal cords. He sits in with the band when they play in Kansas. The band never got "burned out" or tired. They continued to tour every year and have a new singer who took over for Walsh. They added two other players and released an amazing new album in 2016 called The Prelude Implicit. The band has been touring a lot and are writing yet another new album. So as you can see you are very out of touch with what has been happening with Kansas.
@Daveyo7476 жыл бұрын
Wow, you say many facts wrong? Were you alive in 1976? I saw them play and have a record of them from that time. Walsh was the Lead Singer and keyboard player. As I said before only 2 of the originals are still playing from 1976 today. I even was a band player myself from a different group, Chicago Express> competed with Cheap Trick, and is a friend of a famous player from Deep Purple of whom I was with during the Cal Jam 74. I am also a friend from another player who played with the Commodores in 77. End of conversation.
