Thanks for sharing. My mother's family moved to Baxter Springs when she was 3 months old and was raised there. The town was a stop for cattle drives back in the day and the coal mining was going strong. There is a giant electric mining shovel nearby that your van could easily drive into the shovel. The land still shows the markings from it's use leaving ponds for water in the area. There is a small free camping area in Baxter Springs along side the river, just before you get to the bridge leaving town going east. I do know that you were going to Oklahoma, but it was close by.

Russ, those Fushia pink flowering bushes you saw in Vinita, OK are called Crepe Myrtles. We have loads of them here in Slapout, Alabama. Thought you might like to know. Sure do enjoy traveling with you from the comfort of my home. Stay safe...

A great day on the road despite the weather. Museums are always a good option on rainy days (or when it's hot, for that matter). That huge collection of "stuff" in Afton is fantastic! I've got my fingers crossed that we get to see the Blue Whale of Catoosa in the next video. Until then, happy trails!

Russ, I can't believe that when you walked out back of Will Rogers Museum that you didn't walk on out to his gravesite out there. A statue of Will on his horse is out there too. That statue used to be out front (1989) where the stone memorial is now.

Drinking a hot cup of joe while watching this episode and trying to stay cool in a dark room on a rather hot/muggy day. No a.c. here. I've read that hot coffee actually cool you down. I'd have one anyway. Cool museums - wow. That would take me hours to go through. Enjoy the rain there. It's still hot out west. Safe travels! Cheers. 👍

Just before you get to Galena, there is a mountain from the leftover debris of the Joplin Tornado. Also, you should have continued south to Shumerhorn Park and Shoal Creek. There is the creek, a cave, springs, hiking trails, and a museum.

Being confined to a wheelchair, I really enjoy your shows. I especially like the ones that are in the Rocky Mountains and Deep Forest. As I have spent most of my life in the Great Salt Lake desert. PS, could you show us the inside of your Mercedes cargo van and how you have it set up as an RV?

It seems like your whole Route 66 trip has been gray and gloomy. And hot and humid. Is that typical for summer? The land is slightly changing as you travel west. I've never been anywhere near there as we are from the coastal Pacific Northwest. Thanks for being a good sport through all these long driving days. Not much time for e-biking and strolls outside. Maybe stick to the mountains of the west next summer.

Hi Russ, I've probably all your videos, straining to find ones I haven't seen. I do have one request, being a huge rail fan, could you try and show a bit more of the trains when you see them at crossings etc. Especially the engines if you can catch them. I'm always hoping that you will show a bit more of the trains when they are passing or by you.. This video had quite a few and I was hoping to see a bit more of them... LOVE YOUR VIDEOS from back in the day with Scoobs and the camper to today.. your just fantastic.. Thanks and please keep it going!!!!

You may want to make a correction in your description. The Kansas stretch of Route 66 is only 13 miles long, not 34. When you do ever come back through Galena, please visit Gearhead Curios and Cars on the Route. Cars on the Route has the exact truck that inspired the character of Mater from the movie Cars with a Mater replica next to it. Another worthy place to visit is Nelson's Old Riverton Store in Riverton next to Dollar General. Nelson's opened the same year Route 66 was commissioned. The Rainbow Curve Bridge is the only arch bridge left on the Mother Road designed by James Marsh. The other Marsh Arch crossed the Spring River and was demolished when they widened Route 66 to four lanes. Miami (pronounced mi-AM-uh by the locals) is a neat drive. I have actually driven on the Ribbon Highway that still exists between Miami and Afton. The concrete one the routes are only nine feet wide.

You missed The Mining and Historical Museum in Galena, well worth a visit. It is in a small MKT depot on 66. It was shown on one of the story boards heading to Baxter Springs. Galena is an ore of lead and I have always remembered it from chemistry class in the 50s

I looked this up for some reason I asked google what is in common with route 66 and philips 66 - The specific gravity of the gasoline was close to 66; the car testing the fuel did 66 miles per hour; and, the test took place on US Route 66.
