A redo of some earlier footage, using a lower compression rate, thus higher quality. Plus, a little bit of the on-the-ground action that day, feeding the fish there.

Thank you for sharing this priceless video of what is now gone forever. Since Pele has taken back the land that was stolen, perhaps now the Native sons and daughters will get their land back and Pele will rest in peace.

I remember attending a company party in Vacation Land. It was a very nice place, seeing those huge Ulua swimming back and forth in the ponds, watching the old man next door throwing palo to feed them. Am just saddened that when the area got over run with lava, those Uluas must've faced a tragic end. Well, nothing could be done to stop the lava flow, nor stopping Pele from reclaiming her land. Mahalo for the great memories, Cuz... great job!

Thanks cuz! One of Sandy's co-workers had acces to a house right across the street from where I was flying from and we would sometimes have overnights there. I remember our kids grabbing fish swimming across the street at high tide! Was one special place.

Al you did a great job on re-doing the video. Thank you for preserving the memory of my grandparents' home and their final resting place. Even though the property as we knew it no longer exists, my grandparents' legacy will continue to live on.

Now wiped out forever. Never again can any of this been seen. It's difficult to imagine this could all be permanently destroyed in a matter of hours. At least this video, and others, will preserve what once existed.

Didn't know about the "gating". (Don't know how things work on Hawaii.) Still a little sad that this now all gone. But Madame Pele created it in the first place. We'll see what she comes up with this time around.

I noticed that some of the Pools were made, not natural. The point is, this earth doesn’t “belong”to us. We are Sojourners. I can’t imagine

Kari Fredrikson, yes, as is obvious to all, the ponds are man made, with some being recent, but many of the larger ones going back 400 years. Those were built by pre-contact Hawaiians, who had a sustainable system of aquaculture and agriculture, so that when Capt. Cook arrived, it supported an estimated population of 250,000 500,000 people. We could learn a lot from them.

It looks like people just started pouring concrete pads onto shallow water reefs and plunked down a house? And, the Big 17 acre mansion dude decided to wall off his water frontage without permission. There was allot of misuse and abuse of ocean access laws ... pau.

These were once, ancient fishing ponds and native Hawaiians had access to the beach to fish and perform religious ceremonies. Until today, it has been gated for the last twenty years. Food for thought. Do we want our beaches to be consumed by private entities or rethink how this area is permitted by the county in the future. Sad for landowners, you were sold zone 1 real estate.

Helen Nahoopii does that mean the Hawaiians could no longer access their traditional fishing spots?
@AlistairBostrom

Helen, without going into it here too much, let's just say that I definitely understand where you're coming from. Remember all the ugliness where some people there didn't like locals exercising their right to enjoy Champagne Ponds? Some say that this is Pele's payback. Food for thought.

Alistair Bostrom It is so wrong to stop the traditional owners access to their spaces and places, all things considered. Arrogance and ignorance are a terrible combination.
@AlistairBostrom
@AlistairBostrom 6 жыл бұрын
Joanna Rees-Jones Indeed. I totally agree. Some people are just too arrogant. What I am really sorry to see going are the ancient fish ponds. The Hawaiians knew how to live sustainably, in balance and these were a part of that system.

Pulama Terlep ai, it is a cleansing. This area needs to be restored to its original purpose. To become a public fishing place once again. My father is Kanaka Maoli, and we needed fish to get by and to sustain our family. The last time Pele took Kapoho there were farmers and a village above green lake. Remember Green Lake? The owner use to let us swim there - 1966. All ponds were respected and open to all. No gates. And we respected private homes. Neighbors helped one another. Sad, yes. But, mega mansions that were built in this area just took, built walls on the ocean as if the ocean was there's? No. It is not. The laws PASHA is to protect fishing rights. For the people. No more gates. Period. Go somewhere where gated communities are legal like Florida.

So many people lived there. They could try to change the direction of the lava flow. They could try to build a dam just to push the lava away into the burned area.
