This movie was so triggering because it reminded me of my own dysfunctional family. And as the eldest daughter it was always upon me to be the mediator. I had to co-parent my younger sibling while being a therapist for my bickering parents. I had to be the perfect daughter while my brother had the free reign to do everything in life, then be hated by my him for being the “favorite child ” My brother literally checked out of any duty as a son and I had to be a bridge between them too. Like Fawad’s character who had to stay behind and take responsibility despite being called disgusting by his mom, gaslighted by his dad and his brother taking flight again when there were responsibilities involved, it’s always me who has to stay n shoulder all the responsibilities. It’s honestly tiring

I want to say this to any brown kid who has been hurt by their family multiple times and are expected to forgive them on the basis of “family is family” despite never receiving a proper apology; You don’t. YOU DO NOT NEED TO FORGIVE THEM. It’s okay to feel anger without the guilt associated for feeling that way simply bc they are ur family, it’s okay to take time to process the hurt. You forgive them when you are ready, may that be tomorrow or never.

No. You re wrong. Feeling anger is taxing it will kill the goodness inside you. It’s better to forgive any day why should a person who did nothing wrong feel anger nd get frustrated? Just forgive nd understand that they re too humans nd blinded by many things. People mess up without them knowing at times. It’s better to let go of anger nd be in peace with oneself.
@chewy9936 Жыл бұрын
@@dysplasiaanaplasia4128 anger is as much a human emotion, it doesn't make you any less of a human. Anger is as important as forgiveness or happiness is. Why are we supposed to be perfect all the time despite people around us wronging us all the time?!
@janaris97 Жыл бұрын
@@dysplasiaanaplasia4128 Anger is an unfamiliar, little understood emotion. This makes it easy for people to have unhealthy ways of dealing with anger, but accepting cutting people out of life without forgiveness can change this dynamic. Anger can be healing and productive; one has to know how little or how much to hold on to it. So while “forgive and forget” is the rulebook for getting closure, it is not the worst thing in the world to hold on to grudges. If anything, it’s a sign of self-respect, of taking stock of what one deserves. People who acknowledge boundaries, who know who should be in their lives and who shouldn’t, come from a place of self-awareness. People must not compel them to “forgive” just because it’s the “right” thing to do. To not hurt people is the right thing to do too, but some still do it. Don’t confuse this with ego or stubbornness; no, the unwillingness to forgive can also speak to more confident, sacred feelings of self-worth. Mercy is beautiful, but you can not force it.

I feel the mother's reaction to her son's revelation was not justified but it was understandable. We get to know that from the very beginning, she viewed him as "the perfect son" and so, it was hard for her to digest that he was someone else. Irrespective of what she said, she seemed to be upset about the lie rather than his identity. Fawad Khan was brilliant in that scene and it's my favourite of the whole movie, just because of how beautifully written it is. When he says that he can apologise for the lies but not for who he is, that hit me hard.

@Fakemandvi Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry maybe you may not agree with me, but you guys are way too harsh on Rahul. Everyone is so focused on what's wrong is everyone's life that we never realise that we never know the struggles of Rahul's life. Because we are not shown his life, maybe that's why it's so easy to judge him. But as an elder child myself I can safely say, and I'm sure so many of you will agree, he along with his parent's favour, which makes Arjun mad at him also gets the burden of all their expectations. He didn't just want to be successful, he NEEDED to be successful. Because that's what his parents expect of him. He cannot do anything wrong. He is not allowed to make mistakes, not one misstep. He has to be a success story. He cannot let anyone down. And so at times, he may even have to live an illusion to keep everyone happy. Even at the cost of his own. He was never a bad brother, he was actually a good, and real one, he's not the parent, he shouldn't have to live with the responsibility of being FAIR to his younger brother. Yet he tries to do his best, so he get's frustrated, and expects Arjun to now share some of that burden now that Arjun is older. Like when Arjun get's to leave when his dad died because he was betrayed by his mother and so cannot be the one to stay a little longer to just stay by her side. But Rahul was called disgusting and shamed for who he is and also betrayed by his mother and was not even wanted, he still had to stay because his mother couldn't be alone at such volatile time. Irrespective of how betrayed he feels, how dirty and small his own mother made him feel, he had to stay to make sure the well being of the same person. That is just his life. So, when his mother gave him the manuscript, he didn't question where she got it from, he was desperate, because that manuscript meant freedom for him, not just from a chaotic family, burden of his parent's expectations of him, but also to live freely, move somewhere far where he can be himself, love who he wants to, but could never own up, never express. And I have no doubts in my mind that he wouldn't have taken the manuscript if he knew it was Arjun's. He wouldn't have taken it even if it meant to say goodbye to his much awaited freedom, forever. And how can i be so sure? Because that's how he is throughout the movie, he never needed someone to tell him to own up to things he did or even things he did not do. He willingly took blames for his as well as other's actions. That shows not only was he mature enough to not play blame games but also knew the extent of his family's bias towards him and acknowledged that if anyone can get away with a mistake, it was him, so just take it because he'll be the least affected party. So he didn't always have that patience with everyone, everytime. He snapped every once in a while as well. We need to have sympathy for him. Protect Rahuls pf the world.

In the movie if for a second anyone would have stopped the father somehow, he won't have died. They will regret that forever even though it's got a happy ending but not actually. It's just they are trying to forgive and accept each other but scars will remain. As you said there is never happy ending, but times you are happy or sad and you have to get through that.

That sent _shivers_ down my 19-y/o self’s spine who had just started coming to terms with his own Bi-ness. And the big reveal with her at 13:30 didn’t help either as my own mother hasn’t been very supportive about my writing (I’m the ‘rare’ creative in a family of engineers, lawyers, businesspersons, CAs, et al). Its so painful to watch the reaction of the mom after finding out about her son's sexuality but as an Indian its just how the 90% of the time it'll be when you come out to your parents sadly😢

I am actually intrigued to know now how they would react to another Shakun Directorials. Ek Main aur Ek Tu & Gehraiyaan ; two starkly different stories

The part about the mother saying she's hurt bc her son is gay, it's homophobic as hell but you need to understand that most people in India are still ignorant about it, especially that generation and that's just what they've been taught. It's hard to unlearn ingrained societal values. Things are slowly changing now but it'll take decades.

i dont understand how arjun forgave his mom. she could have literally asked him b4 giving it out to his brother if she actually thought he wasnt serious about it, makes no sense to keep it a secret all these years, just sitting and watching the brothers relationship with each other getting destroyed and actually calling them animals for fighting instead of feeling even an ounce of remorse is unforgivable to me.

The only thing I don't like about this movie is that Alia's character shouldn't have kissed Fawad's character.

why? she was attracted to him , they were drunk , and they had a moment . It was necessary for Arjun's sub plot too , or how would the whole family have major fight with each other. Actually she and Arjun should have remained friends after that revelation , it would have been more realisic and better ending for them as well

Just incase you guys missed it, the older brother DIDN'T know that his mother gave him his brother's subplots. And the reason he took Arjun's 2nd book draft was for adding suggestions, that Arjun mentioned in the end helped his book get published 💯

Well he still took them from his mother and incorporated them in his book.... Maybe he didn't know they were his brothers, but he definitely knew they weren't his.....
