Written by James Taylor, performed here by Kappa Danielson
I love James Taylor....love his songs...his voice.... This song was written after he was told that an old friend (Suzanne) had committed suicide. He wasn't told right away because they thought the knowledge would upset him and interfere with his career; he was in London at the time. She did not die in a plane crash as is commonly thought. Flying Machines, mentioned near the end of the song, was a reference to James's band that was breaking up and a career that then was not going well for him. The first verse is about hearing about the death of Suzanne, the 2nd about his battle against heroin, and the third about his hospital stay for depression and drug addiction, and the major disappointments happening in his music career. The amazing thing to me is that this song is about so many dang depressing things and yet it has such a comforting feeling about it....and somehow a feeling hope that is not directly expressed but just seems to flow with the song....I love how he weaves these three different topics together as if they were one subject and really they are...the struggle against things he could not control that were tearing his world apart.
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now

Hi Kappa, no matter if you will read this or not, but I just wanted to thank you! I’ve just stumbled into this version of Fire & Rain, I was not looking at this specific song or at anything directly related to James Taylor… but I love this particular song but I have to admit that it’s been years since the last time I heard it… So I am very glad that YT proposed it to me and even more happy that proposed me this version! The notes you wrote about are extremely interesting, I never though about this song as you wrote, also because I did not know every fact that you mentioned, but it is an interesting perspective that you brought us. I have to admit that, not knowing some of the things you mentioned and not being an English mother tongue (se years ago even the song lyrics where not completely clear to me, and we did not have internet), the music and James voice always delivered to me a sense of relief… as if: news and reality are really bad and sad but I am alive and I can get through somehow. Words does not say so… but the atmosphere has a different intensity. Thanks a lot!

I think your cover is far more emotionally evocative than Sweet Baby Jame's. How do I know? I cry earlier. Also...without checking, I think I hear a bit of your own guitar riffs between verses and they are as beautiful as your voice. I don't want to cry now. Had a couple of blows within weeks, not quite as bad as Taylor's but still... And still, as Emerson Lake and Palmer might say, Still you turn me on. And there is comfort in your music.

Another very nice interpretation! James has always been my favorite artist. Even got to meet him once and shake his hand. As I extended my hand, I said "Give me some of that magic James", he smiled and shyly said, "OK". Another great song, I want played at my funeral is "You Can Close Your Eyes". Please check out my version of Fire and Rain at, Dave the guitar guy Thanks for posting, your great! Peace, Dave

Kappa, this is probably your greatest cover of a standard song. In my opinion, it's as classic as Judy Collins doing Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides Now'. You own this rendition in every way and anyone listening knows that you feel it from the depth of your soul. I'm a huge fan of yours. I would love to hear you do "A Case Of You" or "Both Sides Now".

@ChrisWooleyAC I'm in standard tuning...:) capo on the second fret. His recording is capo 3...I chose to drop it a half step for my voice...on one live video here on youtube he plays in the same key I do here except in kept it capo 3 and had every string tuned down a half step....I liked that key...I played it that way for a bit....but decided for live playing that it would be easiest to just drop the capo so I wouldn't have to retune every string inbetween songs....
