Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 33
I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: • Online Learning During...
This video I made to introduce my Ceramics II kids to some basics of Wheel Throwing, as this is one of the learning standards we were still yet to cover this year before we were closed out of school. Unfortunately, these kids won’t have the opportunity to throw on the wheel, but at least they will be able to see how it is done and to understand some basics of it. In this video I show the basics of centering, opening, pulling, and forming a cylinder, shaped cup, bowl, plate and vase

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

i have never seen a more comprehensive tutorial on throwing before.i realize you are teaching high schoolers, but this is more in depth than most university instructors do for a beginning class. I applaud you for being so in tuned to your students and us older students that really want to learn pottery. Thank you and God bless

If you're a student in Karen's class, you have no idea how lucky you are (when you get back to the classroom) I'm a 30 year old male, learning ceramics in my spare time during the quarantine, this is _the best_ video on KZbin, you have no idea how hard it is to learn on your own

No joke, this one video taught me: Coning up and down with a sponge, using your knuckles mostly towards the bottom with your right hand, which helps flatten into a disk so much easier, I was having problems there (so that's 2 things) The dig your thumb in as a tool, such an excellent method of opening. I've tried 2 thumbs, 3 fingers on the right hand, pointer finger above the index finger with left hand bracing. One thumb controlling the other is the best, plus opening is largely controlled by the joint in the thumb, very stable mini-pull after collaring - this explains so many problems... You also taught me how to make bowls I just finished my lunch break from work where I aimed to make 2 bowls, and I made 2 bowls. I've only ever made 1 bowl before, and largely I wasn't sure how I did it; no other attempt was successful until today. Kind regards from Brisbane Australia

I think you are great Karen. I’m struggling pulling the walls up? My walls keep going out wide into a bowl shape. Can you give a more in-depth video on the pulling up the walls please. Also when you cut off the top sometimes with the pin tool can you show really slowly and exactly where you position the pin tool. I’m not great with angles so would appreciate it if you could show close ups. I’ve tried doing it but have completely ruined my work. Thanks Karen

I learned to throw mainly thanks to your older videos, this was a good refresher! I appreciate the way you explain things, it’s very beginner friendly compared to other potters :) if you’re planning to make a follow up about wheel throwing, I’d appreciate if you could address how not to leave the bottom too thick... I’ve become decent at throwing but I always have that problem (including the fact that the inside shape and the outside look quite different), so I always have to trim the hell out of my pots 😅

Farzana- self taught is sometimes the most effective way to learn. I tried to soak up information like a sponge when I was new, and that has helped me become the potter I am! :)

What type of wheel do your students use? Would you recommend it?

Good morning! I have three types of wheels in my classroom studio. I have 5 Pacifica 400's- which are 25+ years old, and still going strong, I have 8 Brent CXC's which are 20 years old - also still going strong, and I have 12 Shimpo Aspire Tabletop wheels which are nice little wheels. If outfitting a personal studio space, I would go for a floor model for strength and durability. Both the Pacifica and Brents in my experience have been fantastic. Two major differences in those wheels- the Pacificas have an easy reverse toggle switch- the Brents are more complicated to reverse the plug, AND, this is a biggie- the splashpan of the Pacificas seem to be nicer for kids that use a fair amount of water- as it doesn't leak out of cracks as does the Brent splashpan. (Sometimes kids are over zealous, and it leaks on the floor or on their shoes!) At home, I have a Pacifica 400 I got this fall which is large enough for the biggest pots I may want to throw, and a brand new Skutt wheel I will be shooting a whole new series of videos on this spring/summer. :) Can't wait to break that baby in- hopefully this weekend!

Hi. I am left handed and do not recommend teaching left handed beginners on a reversed wheel. For one, it makes it difficult for a right handed teacher to do hands on with the student. Left handed people adapt toa right handed world all day every day. We adapt well. In pottery we use both our hands equally. I know there are some who disagree with me but older wheels may not reverse and that can become a handicap to a Potter down the road. In Japan, they spin their wheels clockwise and I doubt the whole of Japan is left handed.😊

I just offer it to my kids as an option. Most don’t switch it, but a few prefer it! :)

Sandy Knowles I’m actually right handed and spin the wheel clockwise (I learned to throw in Japan). I guess it’s just a matter of adjusting :)
@BasilWallace
@BasilWallace 4 жыл бұрын
I'm also left-handed, I bought a brand new wheel that only spins counter-clockwise. At first I thought this would be a problem, but I'm preferring learning this way (I'm learning via KZbin during the quarantine). We do adapt well...
