Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 34
I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: • Online Learning During...
This video I made to introduce my Ceramics II kids to trimming the wheel thrown forms I threw in yesterday’s video. Trimming on the wheel is one of the learning standards we were still yet to cover this year before we were closed out of school. Unfortunately, these kids won’t have the opportunity to throw on the wheel, but at least they will be able to see how it is done and to understand some basics of it.
If you would like to view yesterday’s video when I threw these forms, check out this link: • An Introduction to Thr...

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

I will try to hold the trimming tool the way you showed. I’m pretty bad at trimming and my bottoms are usually not perfectly flat 🙄 also, I often have the problem that my pieces move and try to fly off the bat (even when I use a griffin grip)... do you know why that happens and how to avoid it?

Hi Starcrossing! First, if your bottoms aren't level... try leveling first with a surform or shredder to get an even surface before trimming. Next, use your left hand on the base of the pot, to hold it down a little bit while your hands are locked and trimming. The left hand pressure will keep the pot from flying off. Thirdly, perhaps try using the GG sliders and hands just above the widest point of the pot... so, in other words, the hands are above the widest point and it can't slip out? I know that isn't always possible... but helpful when you can!
