The Benkei thing is hard to explain. But a kind of western comparison might be "Robin" to Ushiwaka's "Batman". Like a sidekick.

The "Benkei" reference is rather funny - Benkei was a warrior monk, who at some point served a famous Japanese commander, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The childhood name of the latter was Ushiwakamaru, containing the first kanji of Ushijima's first and last names. Also, during the starting players introduction you could see Asahi drawing smth on his hand - it's a way to calm yourself down: when you're nervous, you draw the kanji for a "person" (人) on your palm and then "eat" it.

That's right! In Japan, "overwhelmed by people" is expressed as "swallowed by people." "Before being swallowed by people, I've been using it for a long time as a spell in the sense of" let's swallow people. " Write 3 times and swallow!

Man s3 is so good. It makes me so sad how season 4’s animation dipped so hard. In my time playing volleyball (for a pretty damn good team), the little flourishes and choices in how they animate the show are so realistic. The way Oikawa glances at his spikes before he sets, the way misrecieves are animated. It was all such a treat to see. The animators clearly understand the sport. In season 4 it was like the people animating ung knew nothing about the sport and just watched haikyuu. Hopefully season 5 will have animation as good as S3

@@termindterguta3514 have you seen the stills? Half the time the characters don’t even look like themselves. Let me put it this way, I can agree with you that S4 animation is not bad per se, it’s like average to good- whereas season 3 was phenomenal. I’m not sure if you know about animation, but I actually animate. In S4, the ball compression is done wrong, the character face and height is inconsistent- and what I can say as a volleyball player is some of the timings feel off/unnatural, the swing motions are way slower and draggier compared to the more compact and stylistic ones on previous seasons, and they are just taking like 1000 steps in their approach whereas it was way less in previous seasons and even less in real life where an approach would be anywhere from 2 steps in a pinch to like 3-6 steps with 6 being incredibly uncommon. Additionally, you can clearly see in the OVA and S4 that setter are just like standing without their hands up and look at the ball before they prepare to set. That is just so incredibly jarring to see for anyone who has played the game at a decent-high level. Like these supposedly national level players just have the mannerisms of rookies. I have never felt that way in seasons 1-3. I get that some people love haikyuu and will defend S4 to their graves, but cmon I love haikyuu too and it’s so plain to see that the animation dropped of a cliff.

@@termindterguta3514 also to make it simpler by means of food metaphors, s3 is fine dining, s4 is fast food -decent, tasty to a literal piece of gargbage. Like I didn’t even mention classroom of the elite or called it good or anything. Like honestly, I don’t wanna look down on your or anything but did you really feel that the S4 animation was that good? Did you feel that it was on par with seasons 1-3? Out of 10 how would you rate S4 animation? I would personally rate it like 5 or 6/10, just at the average mark as compared to S3 which is at a 9/10

Cheerleader bands at Japan's high school volleyball competitions (especially but not only national level) are absolutely insane. They often recruit other school clubs (say, the school orchestra) to participate. I remember feeling like I was going deaf at the stands at Spring High x)

He is left handed so the spin on his spike is different to what Noya usually deals with especially with that much power on it, which is why he says "hello lefty".

For those who is still confused about Aoba Josai being the most complete team and Shiratorizawa being the most incomplete thing. Its a matter of addition and multiplication of plays. Aoba Josai is a master of multiplication of plays where they do feints, synchronized attack, quick in mid and more. In simple terms they have the best chemistry even though they don't have that "star" player (except Oikawa in the setter) vibe. While Shiratorizawa is an incomplete team because they're just a great team. They're a team with a deep squad but chemistry and many plays doesn't matter if you just "add" strength into your ultimate weapon, Ushijima.
