It may be just me, but the execution of your kata after your Okinawa trip (and sufficient time to absorb the things you learned and saw there) is a quantum level higher than before. You really are starting to resemble that awesome, powerful middle aged guy who impressed the socks off me. It’s a shocking level of improvement for a black belt level practitioner. Omedetou!

Great performance! I even noticed a mistake that I have been doing ever since I was taught this kata many years ago. Somehow in my school it became common to teach the turn that is prior to the Nidan Geri to end at 45 degree angle off the prior line rather than straight. Me and my class mates did it this way for years.

Kanku Dai is my favorite Kata (also Shotokan) so I remember instantly recognizing Kusanku in Cobra Kai. Also found it weird how they combined it with some Seienchin though but I guess that's the Kata they introduced in Karate Kid 3 as the Miyagi Do Kata. You'll see more Kata in Cobra Kai S3 when they go to Okinawa. I think I noticed a bit of Sanchin or Suparinpei performed by SPOILER Chozen SPOILER.

I mean, you can hear the force behind them, something I am not too much used to from the dojos I´ve been in... But I guess in Japan it still means alot to get to black belt... Also, since we´re here talking about for a moment: I really like your mindset. Ever thought about giving deescalation courses at schools? Would maybe make the world a little better... It's always interesting to me to see the subtle differences in movement and timing even though we practice the same style. E.g. In the opening movement, we don't move our head up as you did, only our eyes. Our movement is a little slower on that as well. The next two high shutos are 1 count for us, so are both done very quickly. Tonnes of little differences here and there :)

Yes I also noticed these! Same goes for the cross block right before the Nidan Geri. He spun and then performed the block. We perform the block whilst spinning. We also put much more emphasis on the downwards jump. My apologies for butchering any terms/names. I recently started training again after many years off so I’m a bit rusty.

Too bad u didn't cover "Seienchin" the second half of Sam's and Robby's kata. It's actually a fusion of Kushanku and Seiyunchin, or in our style "seienchin". Would be great if you could do that as well. Or maybe try to fuse them in the ending, like in the series. Did you ever created a kata? Maybe a application u could actually do in circles. I have a million ideas, but a Seienchin video would be a great start. 😊

The snap of the movement comes with practice and precision. Especially when you've done a kata hundreds to thousands of times. 90% of that snap also comes from the heavy cloth of the gi so it makes it look and sound far more impressive than it really is. All kata is built on the foundation of movement economy to maximize power while minimizing the amount of movement you actually need to execute the technique, it's why you don't see big wind-ups for anything. So yes, you CAN do it, just like anything else in life you can do anything if you apply yourself

Bankai is an important part of learning Karate. Bankai is the analysis and breaking down of a kata and it's movements to learn and understand the deeper meanings as well as to improve your maai (timing) , ritsudo (rhythm), and nagare (fluidity). In Shuri-Ryu we have two forms of bankai, bankai and oyo bankai, which are further expanded upon in the form of a written, spoken and application demonstration during your black belt exam

Curious about thoughts on kata. Kata is a pre-arranged fight simulation. When I see kata performed, without looking before changing direction, I wonder about safety procedures for a real fight. One cannot just blindly turn and throw a technique without knowing who will be receiving it. Any thoughts and insights would be appreciated.
