The problems is that many people outside of martial arts lump hobbyists with professional fighters. Nobody would assume that 10-year-old child who plays basketball would be able to match the skills of professionals in the NBA. Yet many laypeople assume that a middle-aged martial arts hobbyists is on par with a professional fighter. Martial arts CAN be for everyone as long as people distinguish between hobbyists and professionals/competitors.

When I was young, a child basically judo was the only thing available and allowed in my country of origin. The training of karate was only for the secret police apparatus and military special forces (spetnazs). It was only after arriving in the United States that I was able to train in karate, and back then karate still employed grappling techniques. So my judo base was an advantage for a while, but the training was brutal and I remember being swollen all the time, from the makiwara and heavy bag. Who would have thought that rolling a wooden pin on your shins would be so painful.

Making karate "for everyone" is why "karate" (so-named) has no credibility.
@tatumergo393116 күн бұрын
That comment right there is what has defined the whole problem with karate. In the country I was growing up, I remember back then karate-do was not for everyone. There was a lot of weight lifting and a lot of calisthenics involved, not to mention the brutal conditioning training. Back then karate training was comparable to what we see today in Muay Thai training. Yet for some reason, more people today want to do Muay Thai unlike back then few people wanted to train in karate. Maybe because karate training had a sort of militaristic aspect to it, and Muay Thai gyms are more like the atmosphere in boxing gyms.

@@tatumergo3931 That karate you mention is most definitely alive and better than ever. The actual problem with karate is the quality control, you have a legit karate dojo and 2 blocks away a Mall McDojo. Several schools of most arts adapted into more practical styles, and are even tied to MMA/kickboxing promotions. I think the idea that there's something wrong with karate comes from people who go to mcdojos and the more "traditional" schools which you'll have to go out of your way to go to them.

@gamerT.V . At least that is a turn in the right direction, but karate combat is no more different than American kickboxing. What I would like to see is pre 1970's style of karate kumite, where excessive use of force was not penalized. That's one and the other was that minimum amount of protection was used. What made karate great back then was, that it was a very exclusive club.

As a 30 year old white belt from Germany, who picked up karate 6 months ago, there seems to be a huge difference in what cultures offer in terms of Martial Arts. Most karate dojos within a radius of a 100km (about 60 miles or 1.5h of commuting I currently do) operate from a school gym, not having their own dedicated place. Also limiting class for adults to 1 block of 1-2h per week, with additional 1-2 blocks for kids per week . Schools and therefore gyms are closed during holidays. Limiting 52 weeks/year to less than 40 weeks/year tops to train. Yes, I would love to live karate as lifestyle, however I am not confident enough in my kihon to even properly practice at home (yet). Not sure if this makes being an adult fall into "karate is not for everyone". However, it would be nice to see solution for that. If I knew what I was doing (like on a dan level) I would consider making a VR app to assist practicing at home. But that is out of reach and probably just a stupid idea from a white belt.

In the 80's and 70's you were doing karate, people thought that you some kind of ruffian or banditi. Well at least in my country, but even in the USA people who didn't know any better people would think that you were some kind of brawler or streetfighter. Certainly the attitude at the Dojo where I trained in the US had the habit of picking fights in the streets.

Great video! Karate can be respected again, but it has to change. Your idea of having a karate grappling certificate is a great start. Much like how you have a black belt in BJJ and Karate, the great Karate masters also had black belts in Judo. Why not combine the arts? In Japan, most of the traditional schools also train their students in K1 style fighting (huge evolution from the point sparring days). Another thing that appears to be more common in Japan is the amount of hybrid Karate systems out there: Kyokushin Karate, Kudo, Shidokan Karate, Nippon Kempo, Ashihara Karate, Enshin Karate, Seidokaikan, etc…Looking forward to more of your videos.

Early karate training was very much like muay thai training today, I'm talking about before the 70's and 80's and certainly not in the US. What made Muay Thai more popular was that it was not as militaristic and loose like karate. Training in a Muay Thai gym is like training in a boxing gym, so even though the training is intense people do enjoy it more.

You’re on a good start. But remember karate is just one tool in ya arsenal. You also got the strength and conditioning part as well. I cannot stress this enough how important strength and conditioning is in fighting. In real time combat you also gotta add boxing fundamentals in it to also make your karate much more potent. The beauty about boxing is it will humble you no matter how tough you think you are.

I'd rather keep underrated martial arts such as Kalaripayattu, Chinese Martial Arts, Korean Martial Arts and Japanese Martial Arts neglected because it was made for weak and nerdy people like us, not everybody should run around with the knowledge we cultivated. I'm talking from experience, I've met many people, men like women that made me come to the conclusion that underrated, mocked and neglected martial art knowledges from Asia should stay away from people's understanding. The world is too wicked.

I would like Karate dojo's bring us some people from street of different levels to fight with, spar with, so it's real. This is something I used to get from a different dojo but after he passed away it got closed down, son didn't want to run it and he left to do his own thing. That was the one thing helped me a lot in real situation. It helped strength my system to stay calm, to be alert and far more self aware and have experience with real fights. Helped me to be far more aggressive too. You need that in this world. Also no belts. No points scoring training. They don't help in real world.

Its different styles of Karate such as Kyokushin, Shotokan, Gojo Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Isshinryu and so on.I get your point.The late great Mas Oyama fought against the ideal of traditional Karate was being turned into a dance,refereing to rhe sports aspect of it when you pulled your punched and kicks,he hated the ideal and this was back in 1947,he later formed his own style.I agree lets make Karate great again.Make it more practical but keep its traditional roots and rhe true power.
