In my Recent video I did on using arm drags for self defense. Somebody commented "I kid you not, you just solved the gedan barai uke for us karatekas." I had no idea what that meant, so I looked it up and found this video. VERY helpful! Good video production as well.

Sensei! Thanks for the informative video! Please explain more the centre of gravity & how to move it, the 3 body axis along with to rotate, when to use each & breathing in & out? What is the general rule here? I love the heal rotation as versus the toes? Which most of us wrongly do! The face turn too! Great tip! Regards Yazz. Brown belt Shotokan

@KarateDojowaKu4 жыл бұрын
Shotokan doesn't have shiko dachi, so I can't do a very good explanation... sorry!
@josephnisa57373 жыл бұрын
Same as Kiba-dachi but the toes face out at about 45 degrees. Shiko-dachi can be found in Katas from Karate styles that derived from the Naha-te Karate styles in Okinawa, e.g., Goju-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu. Shotokan Karate (Gichin Funakoshi’s Karate style) is an offspring from Shorin-Ryu Karate which in turn is an offspring from the Shuri-Te Karate styles in Okinawa (Sokon Matsumura’s Karate). Shiko-dachi cannot be found in any of the 26 Shotokan Katas, which are Shorin-Ryu (Shuri-Te) Katas with some changes, e.g., Funakoshi replaced Neko ashi-dachi by Kokutsu-dachi and other minor changes but the essence of the techniques remain the same.

Great video! You’re a young and talented Sensei. The correct execution and application of the Gedan-barai (and of course other techniques) in real combative situations is what ultimately matters. Your striking/kicking range applications of the Gedan-barai are OK but two of them are rare in real fights (as taught and executed in the Dojo). Perhaps you could make a another video with more applications of the Gedan-barai in the grappling range.
@geocubano4 жыл бұрын
A bit different from Classical Okinawan Karate, Since the Ryukyu styles tend to do this at a much closer range and both inside and outside the attack.

I think Shotokan does a wider stand to build up the leg muscle. I heard higher ranks will eventually do a narrow stance.

Terrible posture and execution. Shotokan became just a franchise of mcdojos.
@moehoward86913 жыл бұрын
His posture is ok and his execution is also ok, but his power and understanding of power generation is non existent. He is simply going through the motions. The idiots who think this is great, do not understand the difference between good shotokan and weak shotokan ( what we see here is weak , children's shotokan.

If you block with your elbow locked straight, you will lose strength and power as well as having a greater possibility of injuring your elbow and arm.
