Also: Actually practice punching objects. I have witnessed many, many students who have been practicing karate for a significant amount of time, yet could not move a heavy bag.

At his first demonstration of punch without chest movement and with, I noticed that on the "with", his HIPS (and legs, of course) were moving. It wasn't that he was turning his upper chest, like he was saying. It's that he was linking his arm movement to his hip movement, as he'd mentioned earlier was often suggested. I think ultimately, strong punches come from the legs, transmitted by your ability to hold your torso firm with your core muscles, stomach and back. I don't think the mid-torso muscles that swivel your spine are very strong, so I don't think they would really generate a lot of power.

Can someone explain the biomechanical motion of Arakaki Sensei's punching and striking technical methodology? I've tried punching on the heavy bag without using hip rotation but I can't generate any force transference???

Thanks, so insightful. I was thinking of how to generate a small movement in the larger part of the body and transfer that into the arm for greater impact. Chest seems to be a key area for this, seems similar to the 8 movement from Shogen Ryu Karate. They might be starting a small movement somewhere near the hips (tanden) and transferring that to the chest and then into the arms.

Excellent Yusuke each movement whether it be a Punch Kick stance needs to have every basic element behind it fluidity Target destruction power gracefulness relaxation and looseness which allows more effectiveness than the blow and the sheer focus and true conviction of achieving your goal or destroying your enemy this is the way of the warrior to always improve be better each day out doing the other and to achieve the very best you can be not just inviting but in life in general as an overall human being the focal point of being a true martial artist is to simply be the very best you can be with each DL doing the other enjoying every single moment of it realizing you are it and being driven to always be the very best you can be thanks for sharing be well and weapons are just blocks and strikes more effective ways of getting things done
