This! Absolutely this! I did this in my baseball swing since youth without even knowing I was doing it and was always 4th in the batting lineup. I got more RBIs and home runs than the other two best hitters on the team combined. Not knowing that this was a key factor to my success, I did not apply it to any other athletic activity I have ever done, including throwing the baseball, and was always mid tier at best. Since watching this video I have gone back and applied it to my golf swing, karate, stretches, throwing, and so on. It has made a huge difference. I am going to have to practice this adjustment a lot in order to weave it into my form but I can already tell it is going to be well worth the effort! Thank you so much for making and putting this out on the ether! 🤩🥳😍😍

Thats very interesting. I was shown the same thing in Taiji to generate power! Usage of 'Kua' it was called, I think 👍

Nicely done! I sometimes think of the combination of conservation of angular momentum and the principal of a whip, where the handle and the thicker portion of the whip stops, but the kinetic energy and momentum are conserved in thinner and thinner portions of the whip, until the end cracks with the buildup of energy and momentum.

There is no mystery to the “ hip rotation “ application. It is only because nobody ever really knew the actual technique to generation of power. In the 45 years of my karate journey I’ve had many distinguished Sensei’s saying “ must use hip power “ but never actually explained the principles. I know the principles and teach it to my students for the last 25 years. It’s really rather simple and easy to develop. You could have shown it in this video ( it isn’t a mystery or difficult). All power comes from the floor your foot ( in particular your heel ) is the driving force ( back foot) the upward movement through your calf to your thigh into your hip pushes the kinetic energy up and forward ( hips are only the gears ) that pivot the energy through to your arm or leg depending on the techniques ( strike or kick ). The whole technique is pivotal to your back knee position ( slightly tilted on a 45 degree angle ) which then cocks the hip after the thrust from the floor by the heel ( foot) upon driving from the floor the leg must straighten and the knee moves into a forward motion. Not from Zenkutsu with a straight back leg but rather a cocked leg ( knee ) angle. In Shotokan ( sport style ) the technique is wrongly taught due to the leg being totally straight before enacting punches or kicks, this where the myth was created without realisation. That’s 100% why nobody gets it!! And Sensei’s across the globe don’t understand or just don’t know because they weren’t taught it correctly or ever shown it. It’s “ body mechanics”. Boxers, KungFu, Maui Tai all have the same principal although in a shorter stance, but it’s exactly the same and power generation is 60 to 100% more powerful depending on the karateka.

I like the sport comparison, nice job! My teacher in Kitakyushu knew I played golf and it really helped me with this concept when he used the same method to explain this concept. 🙂

At last someone tell this is not a hip rotation! All my Life i heard : turn your hips! From people who didn t and still don t know how the hips are build, and how they realy move! If you don t know that basic anatomy, you will put the wrong words / concepts to teach your students, and you should not be surprise if they can not do it! Thanks for posting it!

Prof Chojiro Tani Soke Shukokai Karate used the same science from these other sports and developed the double hip twist to increase power in all his techniques. Single hip twist might be a little faster, but not as strong as using recoil from double hip twist.

You need to use your legs more, imagine energy spiraling from your feet, into your hips, to emable your hips to launch your thrust punch. Its about contraction and expansion, shifting your weight/ cog, i.e., move-punch-kick-block with your tanden

Could you say, you lead with the hip, and the punch follows through? As opposed to rotating the hip and punching at the same time, or punch then follow up with the hip?

@@KarateDojowaKu that was a great watch. Loved the technique to drop the shoulder as you go to punch. My main issue is getting my hip rotation speed up. Working hard on that. Thank you for the video!

I never actually gave it much thought before. I guess the word "rotate" can be a little odd. Maybe since the person saying it usually provides a demonstration I knew that they meant.
