Great reaction. I remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Say Goodbye To Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Close To You, We've Only Just Begun, A Place To Hideaway, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3 KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia

Now she is lending her angelic voice to the heavens. Karen and Richard Carpenter were so extremely talented. FYI, the original line from this song was, “and I can hardly wait to sleep with you again” but because of the times, the early 70’s, it was changed to “and I can hardly wait to be with you again”. We lost Karen way too young. I can still remember where I was when the news broke of her death. I just busted out crying. In 1981, when she passed, she became the “face” of a rarely talked about disease. Anorexia Nervosa. So happy to see you doing this reaction. Yes, this RUSH chick is and will always be a Carpenters fan. We miss you Karen. 😢💜

It sickened me when all the Karen Carpenter jokes were going around after she died from that eating disorder. Still sickens me when I think about it. I understand no one knew what anorexia was during that time but it was real and in a very sad and costly way she shed light on a problem that began looking for solutions after she passed. I admit I have trouble understanding the malady but I never doubted it existed.

The instrumental codas, at the beginning and following the first verse, start with an Oboe (for the first 4 and 3/4 bars). French Horns play out the codas final 4 1/4 bars. Making for an unusual 9 bar coda. It sounds beautiful, and it sounds seamless. Brilliant. Lovely reaction young lady, RNB

This song was originally recorded in 1971 for their 3 studio album "Carpenters" Karen Carpenter - vocals, drums, Richard Carpenter - arranger, piano, harpsichord, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond organ, vocals, orchestration, Hal Blaine - drums, Jim Horn - reeds. Earl Dumler - oboe on "For All We Know", Bob Messenger - bass, reeds, Tommy Morgan - harmonica on "Rainy Days and Mondays", Joe Osborn - bass, Doug Strawn - reeds. Karens vocals were done in one take as she read the lyrics from a napkin where Richard had written them. In 2018 (35 years after Karen's death) Richard took the master to London and added the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to the master which he producer, arranger and conducted. The album is called “Carpenters With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra." All so on the album are "Yesterday Once More" "Hurting Each Other" "Touch Me When We're Dancing" For All We Know" "I Need to Be in Love" "I Believe You "I Just Fall in Love Again" "Merry Christmas, Darling" "Baby It's You" "(They Long to Be) Close to You" "Superstar" "Rainy Days and Mondays" "This Masquerade" "Ticket to Ride" "Goodbye to Love" "Top of the World" "We've Only Just Begun". All using the original masters and recording the Philharmonic on it.

I discovered (well I did not discover I walked into a jazz club in Los Angeles and there they were) in 1965. At that time, they were the Dick Carpenter Trio with Richard on keyboards Karen on drums (not singing) and Wes Jacobs on bass or tuba. You can hear how good a jazz drummer she was by searching for The Richard Carpenter Trio Hollywood Bowl Battle Of The Bands 1966. They did 2 songs "Iced Tea" Which Ricard wrote and a jazzed Bosa nova "Girl From Ipanema" and won the contest the recordings are from the contest. Karen was 16 in 1966. in 1968 with Bill Sissoyev as the bass player they were in a televised contest (sort of like the music show now if you win the week you are on you come back for final night) The won again only Karen was singing as she played now. Search for The Richard Carpenter Trio: Your All American Collage Show 1968 Buddy Rich said she was one of the best jazz drummers he knew.
