My problem I have with the word Karen is that it has lost its original meaning. It started off as a way to point out bad behavior from people that are quick to anger twords employees and always ask for the manager and throw a tantrum to try to get there way. But now it’s just a word used when someone disagrees with another person’s opinion. It’s just like the word boomer. Boomer was a way to call out beliefs that felt outdated. Now it’s used the same as Karen. They might as well be interchangeable at this point because they are almost always used in a way to try to shut down your opinion. And when somebody does use the word in a correct context it’s easy to dismiss them because the word is misused all the time.

My Karen story: I worked as a cashier at Hobby Lobby, and Karen comes in and asks where the hair ribbons are. After I pointed them to her, she came back and demanded to know where we kept “the purple ones”, and to get them from the back room. My store didn’t have a back room, what you see is all we have. I told her I could place an order and we could contact her when we get a new shipment, but’s she wanted them NOW and there HAS to be a back room where there is more. Surprise, surprise, she asked for my manager. My manager had to explain to her that we didn’t have a back room and maybe she could make another hair ribbon out of the rolls we have in the craft section? She ran to get some and came back with more equipment. She pulled out the 40% coupon, so I scanned it on her most expensive item. She asked if she could use it on the other items as separate transactions, but I told her I was very sorry bc it’s one person per transaction and it’s against store policy. She stared complaining and holding up the line for her stupid ribbon. Cue calling for Mr. Manager again. (God bless him) He told her that it is not possible to scan the coupon again for another item bc it was against store policy. She. Went. Off. She was yelling in his face, stood there like “I’m not moving until I get what I want”, being all whiny, then she was threatening him, threatening me, etc. Bless my manager, he didn’t give in and didn’t leave me alone with her. He protected the cash register with the fortitude of a knight protecting his maiden’s virginity. She cussed at us as she paid and huffed out the door. I swear I’ve never had to deal with someone so entitled in my life, and I hope I never have to deal with her kind again.

My Karen story: Worked in food service. Specifically, Mediterranean food such as schwarma and all of that. We always served it hot off the grill. A woman comes in orders a beef schwarma plate. She then sits down stares at her phone for 30 minutes. Not even kidding it took her that long. Never touches the food. Then she finally decides to eat it. She spits it out and demands we give her the money back and give her new food because her food was stone cold. Accused me of giving her old food then asked to see the owner. He saw all of it and said "Well your food tends to get cold when you do not touch it for half an hour. So dont blame us for you not eating your food soon enough to eat it while it was hot and fresh like we always serve our food."

Hell, just last week, some woman was on her phone, and our policy (I work at a meat department in a grocery store) is to not help people on their phones. If they get pissy, we can even tell them "Sorry, I didn't want to interrupt your very important phone conversation." Anyway, the lady is constantly talking on her phone, and the place was packed, due to the current epidemic. Eventually, she looks up from her phone and starts talking really loud about how no one's helping her. One of the coworkers, maybe even my manager, outright said that if she's on her phone, she's not getting help, especially since there's a lot of other customers who are actually paying attention. Not sure what happened after that, I wasn't actually there, but I did hear the story from word of mouth.

Karen story: when i was a teen i worked at a fast food place and a "karen" came in to order a works burger (for those outside australia a works burger is salad, meat, bacon, egg, pineapple and cheese) she asked for no meat because she said she was vegetarian, i made her burger and wished her a good day, 5 mins later she comes back and throws the burger in my face, the thing exploded covering me in beetroot juice and sauce and told me i was "a fucking idiot" and that "my parents probably wish i was never born" because "there was no bacon on my burger", when i informed her bacon was meat she did the "i want to speak to your manager" my manager saw everything and was already on the phone to security. We had security footage and everything so she got banned from the entire shopping centre complex.

This is a great story I will continue to tell because it more or less proves that these kind of people do exist, I was working the other day at my local grocery store when this lady is my next customer in my lane (I'm a cashier.) She bags her own groceries, says nothing, pays, and is about to leave when my manager walks up to talk to me. The lady caught him right before he got talking to me and she COMPLAINED that there was no one to bag her own groceries. My manager kindly explained that we were just understaffed that day and there wasn't anything we could do about it. She continued to complain and basically say that it was her RIGHT to HAVE A BAGGER. wtf lady who cares. The thing that surprised me the most after this was realizing that she just bagged her groceries without a word to me at all and once she saw a manager THEN she started to bitch about it.
