Not necessarily. I think of how Joseph was sold into slavery and how his God given gift propelled him to become Prince (ruler) of Egypt even though he was Hebrew. I doubt he was in Egypt pointing out all of the injustices committed by Pharaoh. Wisdom is navigating through life in a land that's not your own by worshiping your God and using the gifts he's given us. -- fight for civil rights? "Olympia Black" is the name of an author who writes science fiction books, mostly about aliens & artificial intelligence. He didnt just throw two words together for shits & giggles. These two are acting as if the director was just making a movie & all of the messages were just coincidences. He put those messages in the movie on purpose.
@oneoone Жыл бұрын
Yep. That’s what irked me the most about this breakdown video. Even their "assimilation/annihilation" segment was very condescending as if the director didn’t know the meanings of what he created. Of course he knew assimilation IS annihilation, that’s why the protagonist ultimately killed his original self in that scene.

Thank you Prof and Dr. for the conversation and thoughts. I thought it was the best movie that I've seen in a long time. Thought-provoking, belly-laughs, cultural references and asks several important questions. Among them: Who are you? Are you who you say you are? Are you all that you ought to be? If that sounds familiar it is the Kawaida. Three Essential questions developed by Dr. Maulana Karenga. The movie also asks who and what are your idols -- the things you worship-- and who is controlling them and you? The movie surprised me in a good way.

I enjoyed the movie. A lot to create conversation and deep thought. His comments about being responsible for drugs and death in the community, him training the young fellow to give him information, the 3 of them walking amongst the folks in the underground and not being seen, his older scientific self doing what he did with the cloning because the community let his brother die in the streets. It’s a lot to discuss. But, in the end, the main statement is “we can’t give up” and we must continue to help educate/save our children, sisters and brothers. We are more than pimps, whores and drug dealers. We can be scientists too, but hopefully not one with a grudge or spite. 🤔🤷🏽♂️

Thank you, Professor Hunter and Dr. Carr for sharing your insights on They Cloned Tyrone. I watched the movie twice. I reflected on some of the issues explored and creative choices made in the film. Viewers are immediately confronted with stereotypes embodied through the main characters. The writers Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier evoked humor, pop-cultural references, music, and social community in an interesting way. They also provided an intersectional lens into how racial, gender, and class oppression condition the lives of the main characters. I appreciate that some R&B songs from the 80s and 90s were included in the movie, like René & Angela's "I'll Be Good." That is my jam!!!
@monicar8875 Жыл бұрын
It took me watching 4 times, re-winding. Juel Taylor is a genius!!! Movie is mind boggling. 1. Personifies History of stereotypes 2. Turns those stereotypes into realistic - everyday circumstances. 3. The so-called founders created a PERMANENT SLAVE BASED SOCIÉTÉ that sustains Black Indigenous Aboriginals' oppression 4. This Grand Experience for those who look like the so-called founders is barely functioning on paper- THEIR CODIFIED laws. Never intended for Black US Aboriginal (non-immagrants) to progressive 5. The neighborhood "Kings and Queens", knights, and ESPECIALLY Pawns FINALLY UNITE, solodify a goal to restore their souls. NINA SIMONE, BILLY HOLIDAY' "Strange Fruit" GENRE Movie.

I very much enjoyed the movie and yes, we've seen these topics addressed individually in movies and the documentary Good Hair, but not in this way. The movie is as well as if not better written than some of the movies Dr. Carr compared it to while managing to deliver a message and social commentary without being heavy-handed and overdone (looking at you, Bamboozled). The comedic chemistry between Jamie and Teyonah was fun to watch. John Boyega showed a depth and vulnerability that I hope we all get to see more of. The movie has a retro 70s tone and texture like a grainy Polaroid. The music's not bad either, although I did find some of the song lyrics to be a bit on the nose. And it is genuinely funny. It isn't often that a movie designed to make you think also makes you laugh out loud but that's what They Cloned Tyrone does. Enjoy. 💜

The items like the perm, food, and music are kind of irrelevant. I interpreted the film as a way to depict direct action against the oppressors. The most pivitol scene is the "deuce and quarter" revolt. It's ok that he used assets from other films because those films didn't lead me to this solution. As yall were talking I had the thought, what if we are the audience at the end? We are watching the reveal of clones. It's on us to imagine the next steps. 10/10 film for me. It doesn't have to compete with the others if we don't force it.

That movie was interesting. More interesting is seeing the various locations in southeast Atlanta where a portion of the movie was taped. Joseph E. Boone Blvd. (fmrly Simpson Rd - The beginning scene, the old school cars driving scene), Lakewood Avenue (the convenient store scenes), and the 'free' scene at the end (I think Jonesboro Rd). There were many movies taped in Atlanta, but this is the first time I saw a movie taped in those aforementioned locations. The three main actors did a great job. I like the movie's subliminal messages as what the pair described.

The topic of hair was quickly swept under the rug. Relaxers have recently been linked to fibroids, hysterectomies, cancers and death. Birth control at it's ultimate finest. I even wonder if these companies KNEW all along, of the harmful effects from relaxers? I mean, who mostly uses this "Creamy crack" anyway? All this trouble to resemble somebody who hates you? Black women walk around with their edges ate out. All from using glue to secure a wig. Then will turn around and attempt to draw a hair line on. Or I should say, draw some edges using a toothbrush. Cause your hair line is gone. Then, if it's even human hair. More than likely, it was donated from a woman. On the other side of the world, that is not even black??? This new form of alopecia is rapidly trending. How many white women, do you purposely see, wearing their hair kinky? Oh, and for the record, my hair is in locs.

"Now what?..." build from our own thinking from our own initiative some communities, farm our own resources. Build trust again in one another and work together to have our own supply chain and rely on one another keep the commerce within the community and not just stay consumers of products in other communities. We know what we like and need just like the other communities know and supply. We need to become the resource suppliers. #BlackOwnedFarms_Georgia_NorthCarolina. #BlackOwnedHairCareIndustry_Texas #BlackOwnedWaterResources_timeToCreate!

Saw and loved. I first thought of 'Black Dynamite' then another movie or two, but it came out with a loud message of it's own.

I'm in worse shape than you Dr. Carr. I didn't know it was David Allen Greer until the credits rolled.

Loved the movie discussion of the concept of assimilation as annihilation- reminds. Me of what we see everywhere in the last 10 years or so of interracial relationships- deep film.

A song by René & Angela was featured in the movie. The song title escapes me at the moment but it's a classic.

What I got from the movie was a challenge to myself. Don't try so hard to be part of the culture, when the culture gives no benefit to the people. The cloning process is basically people who do or act the same as fontaine in the movie. There are lots of fontaines, yo-yo, and slick charles lurking in our hoods and we have been programmed to accept them when they don't benefit the community at all.

Olympia Black as other commenters have mentioned is a Science Fiction writer. I also done a quick check and one of her books is called. "My Human Pet." Which would make sense to why the director would have put the phrase/name in at the point in the movie.
