From a fellow history major to another, it was interesting to see what your day is like as a history major. I attend Louisiana State University at Alexandria now, and plan to go to graduate school after to pursue a MA then PhD. What were some of your favorite classes/historical periods to study?

This young lady reminds me so much of myself when I was a student at NCCU back in the day (late 1970-1986). And my mom who was also a history major at Livingstone College from 1939-1943 would have loved this as well. Mammas girl turned out just fine and she was my role model, who was a graduate education major at NCCU in 1952. We are Lady Eagles.

Unless you want to be a teacher or lawyer a bachelors degree alone isn't all that lucrative, and it's extremely hard to get a job. Once I graduated I was first hired as a legal assistant yet I made the same hourly amount as a fast food worker in my state. Fortunately I was fired from that job and eventually got a job in the healthcare sector as a pharmacy technician for a prominent research university, making slightly more yet still being able to go back to school for a graduate degree while my employer pays for it. My advice: only choose history if you plan on going to professional school after, ie law/medical school or just advancing your history degree into something more employable/profitable.

Thank you for your insight! I decided to major in history because I attend a small, liberal arts college and I believe that the soft skills and resources I gain from this department will help me out in the long run. My college focuses on a broad foundation of knowledge rather than specific classes and specializations (so our history department is a little different than the usual one at any other university). I have a wide range of career interest that include archival studies or library sciences but as well as Public Health. I truly believe in learning what you want to learn while you can and for me, that's history (and biology as a double major). I hope you're well!

KarenKhronicles I have somewhat of a similar background, I started out at Cornell university in chemistry but switched to history because the workload was overwhelming then I also transferred to a much smaller, less elitist Christian liberal arts college due to financial difficulties and found my niche there. It’s a great major if you like reading and writing persuasive or analytical essays however I just hate that it’s not a practical degree, unlike engineering, nursing or computer science which always have had a booming job economy.

Hi! There are plenty of career paths for a history degree. Many people typically go into law or academia. I'm really interested in going into Public Health. I believe that the skills that I will develop from a Liberal arts school with a history degree will help me out!

double major in something statistically useful just in case the history degree flops. i know history majors have options and blah blah blah but i hear way too many reality check stories of liberal arts majors who end up as baristas in debt to just ignore the concerns. and it's not like i'm giving up history, i'm just doing a backup degree too.

@@cowiforna8358 i'm doing economics since it's versatile to many careers and highly respected in politics. personally i think a business degree is bs (you don't need a degree to start a business) and i wouldn't recommend law except for pre-law school maybe. do all the research you can before it's time to settle on a second major

Okay I need advice, I’m currently a marketing major due to the fact my parents rushed me to make a choice but I’ve always wanted to study history, Will it be hard to transfer into history in my sophomore year of college?

In my opinion, because you're not ~too~ far into college, it may not be as hard. I would talk to an academic advisor and a history professor to see if it's doable. You might have to look into summer courses if you're wanting to graduate on time, too. I hope this helped :) Keep me updated!
