It way the Cop handled that interaction was wrong. But I can also understand the point, if I'm a cop and see a open front door without somebody walking in or out, I would investigate it. As said this Cop could have handled that so much more better. Also the dude could have handled that better. Could have just said that he lived there and showed him his ID where the cop can see that he the owner of the house. I'm from Germany where this would be the normal procedure. In my opinion both of them are at fault.

What’s more illegal is the fact he instantly admitted to not knowing 100% if it’s his property he’s taking, either way he’s taking something he knows has the potential to be not their property and could be argued in a court of law he is potentially knowingly taking property without his permission. This is without mentioning the fact that property of the shop isn’t declared property of the customer until the correct process has passed which includes receipts and / or verbal declaration of the dealer.

The people who leaves their carts everywhere are actually doing more damage than this guy is because someone who’s not paying attention and trying to park could hit one of those carts and damage their car. He’s not doing anything illegal or even remotely wrong. If someone beats him up for putting something on his car when he’s not doing any damage or anything illegal, he is and should be inclined to sue them not the other way around.
