Severe caloric restriction when consuming carbohydrates has been known for a long time to damage the metabolism. Doing this conditions the body to use fewer calories to maintain itself, making people cold, tired, and as they frequently say 'feeling like crap'. This has been known for a long time. The Biggest Loser Study looked at what happened to the participants on that show, and found that their metabolism remained low 2 yrs after the show, leaving them with low energy levels, feeling cold most of the time, and generally not feeling well. This lowered metabolism also led to weight gain even when they ate a normal amount of calories. Severe caloric restriction is not the same as a water-only fast in its effects on the body. Dr. Jason Fung has presentations on this topic on KZbin. His Intensive Dietary Management website has info as well: idmprogram.com/

"You'll probably be fine if you never ate carbohydrates again". Despite what we've been taught all our lives I've found this is absolutely true. It just takes a few weeks for your body to become fat adapted. I can go all day without consuming a single carb and feel perfectly fine.

I lost 33 pounds in two months on the South Beach diet about 15 years ago, but I had to stay on Phase One the entire time. As soon as I started Phase Two and added some carbs back I stopped losing. I also was going through a very busy time in my career, working late every night, etc. so I think I was eating very low calorie because I was just too busy and usually missed a meal most days without really trying. I've tried that diet again in recent years and got no results.

~12:17 - Alfred Harper opposed the concept that carbohydrates were essential in the human diet. He was attacked for this view, though without solid evidence. Westman meant to say that Harper said that 'there was no such thing as carbohydrates as an essential nutrient' (in the human diet).

No more protein than the size & thickness of the palm of your hand as a rule-of-thumb. F. Rogers Comment extrapolates the concept well though. Myself? I've always eaten only twice a day from my earliest youthful memory (Always hated eating break-fast). Now? I'm on OMaD (One Meal A Day) about 1300 Calories High-Fat Low Carb. A High-Fat Diet since the 1980's when my Professor at UIC (Biology & Nutritive Sciences) suggested the High-Carb Low-Fat diet was going to not only make American's fat but come back to bite us in our fat arses. What a Visionary!. I personally think that we are socialised (Pavlovianly) to think we need to eat more & more frequently than we actually need to. I also think stretches of fasting with some binge eating might be the ideal.

@@danaricci5044 - Good point. This would work fine if that ribeye has enough fat!! Like a good ribeye did a few decades ago... Or, if we ask at the meat counter for the fat trimmings they cut off the beef and cook that along with our steak. We can also ask for them to grind hamburger for us with 30% fat , or more. This was normal burger back when most of the population was lean. To put it into perspective, sausage was traditionally made of about 50% lean and 50% fat. We can also just buy the fat trimmings and run them through a food processor and add them to that ridiculously lean ground beef now sold in supermarkets these days. Better yet is buying 100% grassfed and grass fattened (aka 'finished') beef, lamb and other herbivores from local or regional farms. Let the farmer kno that you want FAT, well-marbled meat. Yes, it is easier to fatten livestock on grain, but with the right breeds and bloodlines, and good pasture management, beef can and is being raised with good marbling and 'easy fleshing'/fattening ability on pasture alone. (A good pasture is a diverse community of plants, not just true grasses.) You can send them to the Pharo Cattle Company website for info. If you are looking at a beef animal yourself, look for a deep, wide body with a huge gut. Animals fed no grain or soybeans or other concentrated energy supplements need room to process massive amounts of forage- pasture and stored pasture. A 'finished' beef animal ready to harvest should be smooth, with no bony hips, backbone, etc. Avoid tall, leggy animals. The Angus and Hereford were traditionally excellent breeds for raising and finishing on grass, but they have been bred to be bigger, leggier, and not as grass-efficient. There are still bloodlines within these breeds that do well- PCC offers some of those lines. The Anxiety 4th Herefords have not been change from the original type. Other breeds that do well on grass w/out grain include Murray Grey, Rotakawa Devons, and Lowline Angus, now called American Aberdeen Angus. These breeds also tend to have a good hanging weight to retail cuts ratio. f you have a freezer and can buy a quarter to a whole animal at a time, it is pretty economical. You should also get all the organs (that are allowed to be sold in the USA). Ask for the sweetbreads (glands), and to have the fat trimmings wrapped up and delivered with your meat, too. Put on your cut sheet that you want 30%+ fat in your ground meat. And request that they do NOT trim the fat off your steaks, roasts, etc, or only minimally. Hope this info helps someone!

@@nikkiguerlain - Yes, until one has lost the excess weight, then adding fat becomes important. Yet eating fat can help the body adapt to burning fat. Eating fat also helps curb cravings for carbs.

why do the diet studies list show no change in insulin or BP of those on LCHF diets even though this is mentioned as a primary achievement of the diet And even mentioned in the 4th paper as (the diets lowering insulin showed the most weight loss). We are often told be proponents that there is No Means of burning stored body fat Without Lowering blood insulin levels (which deactivate fat metabolism). Also, associated with Low-insulin (due to low carb intake) is lower Blood Pressure Because insulin is known to cause the retention of NaCl in the body (kidney re-absorption)... in my own N=1 study, my BP has dropped significantly from previous eating pattern But although I'm in ketosis it's due to Fasting and Not Necessarily Low Card eating. Thanks for any info! Best regards, Mike

Hi Mike - An interesting question. Please contact the researchers directly, as they seldom have time to read comments on KZbin, and this channel does not belong to the presenter. We have know people whose blood pressure dropped significantly with no drugs after they switched to a LCHF/keto diet - and before their was significant weight loss. Insulin levels are more expensive to track on a regular basis, and blood pressure normally varies throughout the day, so this may account, in part for the lack of data in the presentation that you note. In other of Westman's presentations, he does show case studies of patients, with the blood pressure meds being removed, usually within a few weeks of the patient starting the No Sugar No Starch diet in his clinic. Obviously this is not done if high blood pressure is still an issue in that person. Did you see the slide at 48:58? Dr. Westman shows study results, with the reference, in which a LCHF diet reduces blood pressure. He says, 'We don't quite know why'. Phinney and Volek may have some theories on that. Aside from NaCl, which Phinney and Volek recommend replacing by increasing the intake of salt, inflammation, glycation of blood vessels and/or blood vessels, and/or...?

Rodrigo de Triana was. But he was not looking for the edge of the Earth but for The Indies, because at that time everybody, at least in the sciences area, knew that the Earth was a sphere. Columbus had to convince a scientific comitee (the NASA of that time) in order tu get the funds needed for his expedition.
@Jefferdaughter
@Jefferdaughter 4 жыл бұрын
Metaphor, it as a metaphor. Many of us recall the aim of Columbus' voyage. Most of us also recall the concept that many people had, and a surprising number still do, that the Earth was flat. The point Westman made remains unchanged. The majority of heath professionals still see a LCJ or keto diet as a zone where 'Here be dragons'.

My best friend has wildly uncontrolled diabetes even taking several diabetes medications. She insists her doctor told her she can eat 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal and nothing I say can make her believe me that she can't eat that much. ( I know just from spending time with her that she actually eats way more than she thinks. )
@Jefferdaughter
@Jefferdaughter 4 жыл бұрын
She will eventually learn. Or die. Usually after suffering the horrible consequences of uncontrolled diabetes- like neuropothy, blindness, wounds that won't heal... If we love someone, it really sucks because there is little or nothing we can do about it. But the choice is hers. It's her life. If she reads, you could try giving her a copy of Dr. Bernstein's book, Diabetes Solution www.diabetes-book.com/ Whether your friend is a Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic, the principle is the same: No sugar, No starch. I also had a friend with a closed mind who would not listen to a single word I said, even to share what another physician said- via books or videos, or websites, etc - because I was not a doctor, or a physician. The predictable happened. Another friend listened but disregarded my warnings about diet and a medication which I think has since been taken off the market. This friend at least died suddenly, from a cardiac event, as predicted. I still miss my friends and it still hurts, but 'You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him think.' In both cases, these people totally trusted their physicians. As though a medical diploma somehow conveys infalibility. Guess they did not hear that medical procedures, including drugs and surgeries, is the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA - after cardio-vascular disease and cancer. articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2017/11/18/medical-mistakes-third-leading-cause-of-death.aspx

I really like Dr Westman. Have and greatly respect his excellent book. And have seen other videos he has done. Somehow this presentation seems scattered and not well-organized-his comments don’t always seem logically connected-they are all over the place. Perhaps this is because he is trying to cover too much ground too quickly. Of course, the information he is providing is scientifically correct, it’s just that somehow this talk is not as well organized as others he has given. Despite this, he is presenting scientific proof that a LCHf diet saves lives and perhaps that is far more important than “ style.”

But what prompts insulin production? Low Chromium levels. If you don't have enough Chromium, you can't digest the carbs properly and they turn to fat from insulin. If you have enough Chromium, your body can turn carbohydrates into energy. No excess weight. 200 - 1000 mcg.
