I am 59. My chemical-process free hair is about 40/60 gray and just 3" short of my waist. I do my own hair because the stylists in my area seem to be more skilled at working with artificial hair (weaves/sew-in's, chemically altered hair) and very little knowledge/experience working with Black hair longer than your neck. I was raised on Ultra Sheen (the green one for xtra dry hair) and I swear by it to this day - especially in the warmer/humid months (I live in Michigan) when any form of heat styling is a waste of time. Thanks so much for the information on gray hair. I have also used Matrix and Joico purple shampoos with great results.

Thank you for this information. It explains several things. My mother used grease on my hair growing up because I pretty much lived in a pool and the chlorine dried out my hair. I haven't used grease for more than 15+ years and my hair is fine, long, softer than cotton and curls up with the mention of any moisture. With YOUR help I will FINALLY learn what to do with my hair. THANK YOU!!❤️👍

It's been exposed that most stores sell olive oil which is not all olive oil but has other type oils in it and coloring to give it that look of olive oil. The real olive oil is expensive and mostly sold in glass bottles not plastic. Jojoba oil is great!

@kasatiheqama5592
@kasatiheqama5592 Ай бұрын
Good info on comedogenic ratings of these natural oils and shea butter. However, people need to know that mineral (ie. petroleum, paraffinum, petrolatum) oil is a carcinogen. This explains one of the reasons for the high cancer rates across the world because this harmful oil is used in an extremely high number of body & hair products, even in baby products! I urge you all to do your own research please. It's best to use natural plant/seed/nut oils. However, just because an oil is natural, it doesn't mean that it's for every skin. Do a skin patch test before using an oil or shea butter for the first time. Please note that Jojoba is the best oil for most newborn babies. After 6 months old, you can introduce other oils & butters for your baby. It's also extremely important to use natural shampoos (eg. Ghanaian African Black soap) as the majority of those on the market also contain harmful products, even if they claim the product is natural.. read the labels and research the ingredient. Many of the shampoos sold actually cause dandruff as the chemical ingredients strips the natural oils from the scalp, causing dandruff, dryness, itchiness, hair breakage and dermatitis.

Hello Karen! I just recently found your channel and I'm so glad I did! I have a head full of gray hair and it is kind of problematic. I have been using your DIY moisturizer and it has been working very well for me. I had to add a little more glycerin than you did though. What I would like to ask you about is seborrheic dermatitis. I developed a problem with it when I was "slugging" my hair. If you haven't heard of this, it is putting on a deep conditioner and going over it with oil. Leave it on under a dryer for 30 minutes then wash thoroughly and follow with a conditioner, rinse and style. I used this method for several months and then I started getting scaly dandruff patches on my scalp. I thought it was just dandruff at first - something I've never had a problem with - but it kept getting worse. I stoped slugging and started using a tar shampoo to treat it. I used the shampoo for close to a year and am now at the point where I don't need it but I still use aloe vera mixed with tea tree oil the night before I wash my hair. I've been washing weekly.My entire life I have never oiled my scalp. My mother used to press my hair when I was in school and I washed once a month.She also used the Lustrasilk press maybe every 3 or 4 months. For the last 20? or so years I have been natural and in the last maybe 10 years I have been trying methods and mixtures I have seen on KZbin. Some were OK, most weren't, but slugging was the only thing that created a problem. I stopped experimenting and right now I basically wash with black soap from Ghana and Castile shampoo, deep condition, and oil my hair, not scalp, with a mixture of light oils and braid it up. Since I CAN'T oil my scalp, and everything recommended for hair growth IS an oil, I was hoping you could recommend something that ISN'T an oil that promotes hair growth. The dermatitis did cause some hair loss at my hairline, at the nape on the right side. The right side of my hair is also thinner than the left. I am 73 years old , active and healthy and most gladly past menopause. Do you have any suggestions?
@KarenofCurlHouse
@KarenofCurlHouse 28 күн бұрын
Hi Ms Patricia! Thank you so much for your comment, and thank you for teaching me about 'slugging'. You certainly taught me something NEW! 😜. That is why I love this channel so much because although I'm an educator, my Curl House Community teaches me to much!!! And I can recommend something that is not oil based, and that is actually a product by Curl House -- the follicle stimulating growth drops. I formulated this product to be OIL FREE intentionally because off all of the reasons you mentioned in your message! The drops are full of botanicals that increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and support hair growth. I really emphasize the word 'support' because healthy hair growth begins within -- but I know you are have a healthy lifestyle so you should be go to go. Here's the link and you can use code YT15 to 15% off: curlhouse.com/products/follicle-stimulating-growth-drops

As a person of West Indian heritage, I KNOW you can use hair grease on your hair. I have no idea who started this rumour of hair grease being bad for the hair, but in the UK, most of us know we can use hair grease. We all grew up getting our hair washed and 'plaited' for school. All the girls would have a brand of hair oil in their hair. Some of the more well-known brands were (and are still used today) Blue Magic, Ultra Sheen, Stay-Sof-fro, Dax Pomade and, although not a typical hair oil, Luster's Pink Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion; which was very commonly used. I will also point out that back in the day, there were very rare cases of hair loss or damage. If there was any damage, it would be due to problems of the scalp that was already there, or complete misuse of the product ie using it to straighten your hair and frying your hair or even using it with a hot comb when your hair had just been straightened. I'm sure there's more, but all in all an excellent product that moisturises, seals in moisture and gives a great sheen to the hair.

I can't wait for part two of this series....I have fine hair and even though I use a shampoo brush for my scalp ( And aloe vera juice as a rinse twice a month) there is still some itchiness .. any recommendations?

Hi Cheryl! Do you apply anything to you scalp at all?
@glbeans8147

I used to use fresh aloe vera and it itched my Scalp as well. I still use it but let it soak for at least 30 hours to get that "itchy poison " stuff. Big difference no more itching!

Thank you Karen. This is my first time watching your videos. Since menopause. my hair has been out of control. I have fine hair, surprisingly, the oils you recommend for the scalp is basically what I use. I don't care what I try my hair is like I'll fly away. I don't care how many times I comb my hair it is still the same old song. Is there anything that I can use to bring it under control?

What about Rosemary oil? I read it is good for the scalp for hair growth and inflammation.
@KarenofCurlHouse

Hey there! Thank you so much!! Actually … I don’t really prioritize my skin 🤨 I use something over the counter - Aveeno I believe 🤷🏾‍♀️ I do drink a lot of water 💦 so that helps. But honestly I’ve always had pretty good skin

@@KarenofCurlHouse I have fine, high porosity hair. The high porosity is from birth, not chemical damage. How do I keep my hair moisturized throughout the day, after applying the initial moisturizing products, in the morning? I hope my question is not confusing. Thank you for any suggestions you may be able to provide.

What about MCT oil? Seeing that its thinner, would you say it's less likely to clog the pores? Great video as always Karen!
@KarenofCurlHouse
@KarenofCurlHouse Жыл бұрын
Hello there! Had to do a little research on this one, but MCT oil by itself has a lower comedogenic rating than coconut oil, therefore is will NOT clog the pores 🙌🏾
