Did you notice that Karin and Sakura are basically younger, female versions of Ken and Ryu? Same coloring, similar outfits, rivals that respect one another, the one in red being extremely wealthy... I'm sure there are more parallels, but I'm not that familiar with the Street Fighter universe.

You nailed the thing I like most about Karin: she's not spoiled, she's proud. She strives for excellence and is willing to struggle to get it. She didn't have her fighting skills handed to her on a silver platter! She grows in SFA3 when she learns for the first time what it's like to lose, and moreover, she's willing to respect anyone who can step their game up to the same tier she's on. Also that outfit she's got for SFV is seriously baller. :)

What's fascinating about her is despite of her proud and perfectionist nature, she became quite the charismatic character, she eventually became good friends with Ibuki and Mika, she even hired Birdie. She maybe pompous and shows her sass at times, but that's because she takes things seriously when it is necessary. She also has great leadership qualities that even veterans like Chun Li and Ken respect her not because she's filthy rich, but because she does have excellent leadership skills and a very keen sense of utilizing her wealth to the fullest for whatever goals she's aiming for (which is in SFV, trying to stop a cataclysmic worldwide potential disaster) For even the veterans, she's not just a filthy rich schoolgirl, she actually shown effective leadership qualities.

i really do like how karin becomes the leader of the street fighters in a way in 5(which while takes a bit of chun li's screentime, makes a lot of sense considering how effective and hardworking her leadership is while chun li at times works better in a group.) and she's able to get ties to everyone with her knowledge of fighting while using her business responsibly and even scaring shadaloo into backing off with her power.(love her endings in alpha 3 and 5.) i love her relationship with sakura(and how she tries to help her out when she's down in her story by sending ryu to her showing her compassion and growth.) and how in 5 she's become friendlier while keeping her strong confident personality.(which udon took an unneccesarily long time to get too instead of making her a selfish lili-clone that took things too far.at times.) udon comics does have a problem with characterizing and certain plot elements at times,though it does add cool actions and story points to its lore with my favorites being in the unlimited(i hope the every street fighter character vs. gill fight is put in a 5 dlc story or the focus of 6 as i feel the story should focus on defeating the Illuminati/killing gill as 3 kinda left that plot hanging.) and street fighter vs darkstalkers comics(my favorite lore piece being beliel and morrigan being the ancestors of ryu and kens ankatsuken fighting style to explain why they play similarly.i hope morrigan,lilith and the other darkstalker characters become mainstays in the udon street fighter comics along with introducing other capcom series and ingrid.:3)

in SF Alpha 3, Karin Kanzuki was my main, along with a few others. So it makes me happy that you got to know the character like i do. my greatest moment with her is fighting M. Bison on Alpha 3. We are both down to our final HP bars on the final round. he comes at me with a fully power Psycho crusher. if it hit me, im dead....if i block....im dead due to chip damage, so i COUNTERED IT! it so so fucking EPIC! he died and i had won the battle......it was by far my most epic moment in any fighting game and i will forever love the character. i got SF5 solo cuz she was in it. i abit made about her move set but im still happy to be playing her again.

You did an excellent job on this. More than worth the wait. My initial interest in Karin started because she was presented as something like Sakura’s Ken. Ken is my all time favorite Street Fighter, so when Alpha 3 came out I was already very interested in her. I ended up really liking the character (and characters like her) and since 1998, just loving the character. I remember first getting online and lurking on the very few web shrines she had. While I went off and on with fighting games, I always loved the characters. Especially this one. I was excited when I learned a company would try to finally making a good narrative of the Street Fighter series. Unfortunately, not only did I not enjoy any of the Udon books, Karin’s depiction was a major disappointment. I began to think it just wasn’t really possible to make Street Fighter into a decent narrative and when SF4 came around I wasn’t interested. (Though I loved that trailer with the brush stroke effect) I bought it on a whim probably less than a year after release and really enjoyed it but was still only playing casually. When I learned they were going to add more past characters, that’s when I started following fighting game websites, figuring they would be the first to report if she was going to reappear. There were endless rumors too. There was the fake image of her fighting Sakura in SF4. People constantly speculating that her origin in the manga made it difficult for her to appear in the games. And Street Fighter X Tekken. Oh. Watched every reveal trailer hoping she would appear. I wanted her in the main series but I would have settled for that. I preordered just to play her in the beta. I NEVER pre-order. I could go on . . . and I will. Somewhere on the internet . . . I'd do a web-shrine if I wasn't broke. Again. Thanks for this wonderful video!

I think a major point of Karin's game personality being different than her comic personality is that, as of SFV, she hired(or maybe just took in) Birdie to their household as his "profession" as of the latest SFV Beta is "Kanzuki Mansion Freeloader". Comic!Karin wouldn't touch SFV Birdie, but Game!Karin acknowledges his fighting skill and let's him live with her. It's really neat. Also, OHHHHHHH HO HO. That Ojou-sama laugh gives me life.

Now we get to the princess-curled benefactor of Mika's Mafia! I personally like Karin, because she really did seem like a good person, even if she usually made a rude first impression! I especially liked that she stayed true to her word about sponsoring Mika, meaning that she takes her promises seriously, and has a strong sense of honor. I liked the way the games characterized Karin and her interactions with Sakura, so I'm glad I never read that manga(if only for that reason alone). Her addition to all the other awesome characters confirmed for Street Fighter 5 has me so pumped!

Props for the DYKG segment, that was nothing short of brilliant and hilariously timed. Likewise, the video as a whole was expertly handled, and I'm glad to say I've had my own eyes opened to the possibility of the Kanzuki here. Also digging the delectable theory-writing there at the end. The sad thing is this could date the video when SFV comes out proper, but if it turns out to be true... Hoo boy. One thing I am finding interesting is, Sakura evidently not being on the roster for SFV makes me think of the reasoning. Karin's importance is going to tie into R.Mika... But without Sakura there to be the alternate plot, your Illuminati Connection theory seems the most likely. Can't have a character's only relevance be as a background rival to another, right Rufus?

+JacksonJin - Thanks! :) As for Sakura, nah i think we will see her as DLC much MUCH later on down the line. An older Sakura would make sense from a business/marketing perspective (she does have quite a large fanbase) but they probably didn't want to use her right out the gates because of too many shoto-type characters taking the centre stage in the past. I think we'll see Sakura at some point and their old rivalry will kick back up again, which i'd welcome. Maybe it'll tie in to the Illuminati theory too. Who knows. I just hope it's interesting from a storyline and character arc perspective :)

Karin flew under my for the longest time, too; all I really "knew" about her was that she was a bit obnoxious, she was Sakura's rival, and that even on a highly underrated soundtrack of pretty bangin' tunes, she had one of my favourite themes from Street Fighter Alpha 3 (which if I remember right, was also composed by Hideki Okugawa, who worked on all of the SFIII games, doing Third Strike solo). So hearing that she ain't all that bad is a pleasant surprise. I'll be honest, actually, all the Street Fighter Who Dat's so far have all been a but if an eye opener. One of my main gripes with the series for years- albeit one that probably came as a result of severe Hype Aversion on my part more then anything else- was that not many Street Fighter characters came across as interesting to me. Some were certainly interestingly designed, but I still felt they came across as flat; I only really had love for the characters introduced within the Street Fighter III and EX series'.

that theory between Karin, Shadaloo, and the Illuminati was pretty interesting btw, i dont know if you, Digi, or anybody has noticed this on Ryu, but following the games in the game's timeline, Ryu's hair gets darker each game SF - Red Alpha - light brown SFII - dark brown SFIV - darker brown SFIII - pretty much black SFV - ? it kinda demonstrates how much of a wandering fighting hobo Ryu is considering he doesnt take the time to wash his hair, which would get darker and greasy if not washed properly

+Swift_Heracross Gotta also keep in mind that both him and Gouki have noticeably red hair when using the Satsui no Hadou. With Ryu's hair being red once again in the SFIV timeline, despite being dark brown for his "normal" appearance. Maybe the red hair aspect getting darker is also a showing of how much less and less Ryu is using the Satsui no Hadou, especially seeing how in SFIII, he's completely abolished it and has apparently SURPASSED what it could have given him.

Would you consider doing a video on Cody from the Street Fighter/Final Fight series? (I think he would be a pretty good subject given the evolution of the character over time.) I watch a channels videos for a while to get a feel of their upload rate and personality before i finally subscribe to them, so no worries). As for Cody, i like the guy. I always thought that since Karin is in SF V and the Illuminati are involved in the game, her family could be very important to the game´s story. Being that many members of the Illuminati are high ranking politicians and over all very influential people all over the world, could her parents or even her be part of this even bigger organization. It could very well be that her family is so powerful that they are among the few families that could fathom in standing a chance against the Illuminati. Just my opinion but will elaborate on it with the videos I have planned regarding SF V story

These videos are pretty great, man, I just discovered your series today and I love your presentation style. More popular channels tend to mess up on informational/retrospective videos, imo, by having an annoyingly high ratio of stupid-joke-time to actual-info-time. You're almost as concise as DYKG without being so damn dry. That comparison isn't perfect though since these videos are meant to be entirely informational. Anyways, though, it would be kind of hilarious if some day DYKG asks you to lend your voice for one of their videos even with the little spoof of them that you put in this one.

The strange part about Karin is that I liked her being an effective stylish jerk the fact she has compassion is something I was not aware of but I am not offended that she has compassion even though I love fighters who are jerks because her positive qualities like a fantastic appearance,great number of techniques,speed and power combined with her vibrant personality make her fascinating and a great character to play. Her only downside is you need to be a perfectionist like her to make the most of her and she does not work well for new players that are not willing to invest a lot of effort into her.

When I was watching my friend play SF Alpha 3 home at me this Friday and facing off against Sakura, I noticed that she seem to have similar moves to Fei Long. Seems like I'll be spending some time learning her.

happy birthday karin!!!(i like to think her alpha 3 ending is canon since the satellite shows up again and the only confirmed non canon ending is charlie/guile and i love that in 5 she's not only good friends with sakura & ibuki,fully sponsors r. mika while giving birdie a place to stay with no issue and becomes the big good of the series with how massive her fortune and fighting knowledge is.) i really like her story arc(the alpha series is my favorite story in street fighter to boot.:3) with her being a equivalent of ken to sakura(even fighting the guy himself leading to her respecting sakura.) learning to enjoy the fight but not be a spoilsport about losing(didn't like that about her udon comics version as it took way to long for her development to kick in and she was too similar to lili from tekken in that regard,though i'd love to see them meet in tekken x street fighter.) and is fully supporting of others while keeping her respecting,playfully proud but charismatic that i hope keeps her as a regular. ohohohohohoho :3

To be honest, I'm mostly familiar with Karin through the Naruto x Street Fighter crossover fic by Kenchi618 called "The Newest Challenger" (an amazing story that I completely recommend). Based on your video, he seems to keep her completely in character. Sidenote, the size of Karin's estate is even more impressive when you realize it is in Japan, where because of the high population and limited land space, owning land is more expensive than most places. It really emphasizes how insanely wealthy her family is.

+Sai Prime Their is some history. Karin fought Ken in the second volume of Sakura's manga.(sadly, it isn't actually shown) She also mentioned taking a few pointers from his moves before she met him. She created her own martial arts after all. In Alpha 3, she loses in a rematch if you play Ken and says she didn't think she would lose again.

i'm the same but the one i read was with cody. apparently, he was sleeping in her bushes and he beats the crap out of her body guards. karin then fights him and says if he wins, he can stay with her for free. he does so easily so karin lets him. then she offers him sex as rent for staying with her and..........well, cody was in jail for a long time. ;)

Yeah, the one I saw was called Durian I think. It had Cammy on the front cover and basically Cammy beat her in a fight. I had no idea who she was. So i kinda just thought she was from something else maybe. Like another fighting game. Also was confused about M.Bison's involvement too but I was never aware of Cammy's time spent s his doll commander or whatever so in hindsight it makes some sense he'd show up like he did. o.o

I got a question this time: How do you feel about character stereotypes? For example, from what I seen, the rich character are usually the ones who are the most obnoxious or spoiled. I just wanted to ask this question because from your description of Karin, she seems to break out of that stereotype slightly, and I was curious. Other than that, I hope you will continue the great work.

+gizmo123473 - Truth be told, in some cases i actually don't mind stereotypes if they're used on grounds for people to relate and connect upon. There's been some great characters made from a stereotype mould and they wouldn't have been so great if they were not made from it. I'll probably speak more upon this subject if ever i do an episode on Hakan, actually. There's a lot i want to say about that guy in particular. As for Karin herself, i do feel she fits the stereotype of a rich upper-class female, snobbish in attitude and someone who looks down upon people less worthy than her... but she definitely does step outside the box a little due to the way she shows her respectful side. It's just a matter of winning her respect. She's got her heart in the right place, that's for sure.
