Show wouldn’t work if they did. They just muck around 90% of the time, sarcasm and irony is almost constant, and they basically humour Karl’s nonsense except for the odd occasion

That's even more obvious during Series 0, before they even met Karl. In those shows Ricky plays the part of the fool all the time, while Stephen plays up his lonely loser persona even harder. It's not until they encounter Karl that they start to level out.
