When I visited Nepal a couple years ago I had a great experience. The biggest red flags I saw is everyone is a “licensed tourist guide”. I did meet a local in Bhaktapur who cooked dinner for my friends and I. He ended up being our guide for our trek to Nagarkot then Chitwan. He was an honest man supporting his family and very negotiable with his rate. My worse experience was at Pashupatinath when I was being bothered so much by a “guide”. I can tell even the locals were annoyed by him

Just keep in mind that: - Same work in found somewhere else for half the price. - Karl wasn't looking down at the "Student level painting" but more focusing on the price range (Double price for less quality work). It's just that this situation is pretty different from the regular content of what we see. Hard to see scam related to Art. However, I wouldn't personality have sympathy for the guys charging double because they are not harming Karl, they're harming the real artists working hard to sell their work for an honest price. So don't be mad at Karl for pointing out the obvious!
@Yourebeautyfull2 жыл бұрын
The main issue why it is called a scam is simply because they are lying about literally everything. They are putting on a whole show and it 's all a scam. These are not their own authentic paintings. They steal these paintings from real artists, and then just color them. These are not their own paintings, these are copies. That is why they are worthless. So not only do they steal the work from the artists who made them, they also sell these worthless copies for much more then they are worth. This is terrible for the artist industry. It is stealing from the people who actually have the talent to make a painting like this.

I lost track of how many times I said no, no thank you, not interested, but the whole point of tourist hustling is to apply high and constant pressure and guilt and harassment. I'd say it's a scam. They misrepresent the art by pretending it's more laborious to produce than it really is and that it's more valuable than it is. Some of those things are little more than prints that may have been produced by the hundreds by a machine in China. They have a few people making actual pieces of art so it feels legitimate.

Honestly as someone who has travelled SE Asia, I was interested in Nepal, seeing these comments makes me rethink that. If your mentality in Nepal (as shown in the comments) is that overcharging tourists and guilting them into buying in the fist shop you take them to 'isn't a scam' and 'is friendly and normal' then I really have no interest in visiting. Why would I want to travel there and spend my hard earned money, only to be charged more than 2x the cost and half the quality of something I can buy down the road? Why would I want to travel somewhere where the locals think this is OK? I could travel to plenty of other places who will value the money I earn as much as I do and won't rip me off. Good video, bad comments. Edit: Had something similar happen in Cambodia, once I left, I realised that I actually would have purchased more, but I just couldn't trust that I wasn't being overcharged. This kind of attitude is stupid and everyone loses out. If you sell high quality at decent prices, people want to buy more. If they walk down the road only to realise they could have paid less for better, they feel cheated and will spend less money everywhere to avoid that feeling.

@@mirajane2154 This is the entire problem. YOU have no idea what value is, no idea what something is worth. You literally CANNOT/WILL NOT see the difference between an original artwork and a copy of an artwork. There are millions and millions of very talented 'paint-by-numbers' artists, it requires very little talent and even my grandfather with severe Parkinson's painted a beautiful copy of the last supper. It WAS WORTHLESS BECAUSE IT IS NOT ORIGINAL. Just because someone spends time doing something does not give it value. Is that too hard to understand? There are thousands of AMAZING artists out there who make ORIGINAL paintings ON COMMISSION... MUCH better quality than those shown here and much cheaper... and they live in the US or Australia. They are also Original. I think maybe you guys live too close to China if you really struggle to see the difference between a copy and an original piece. The value of art is almost always based around originality and exclusivity, if anyone could just re-paint an artwork, then ALL art would instantly lose value and Monet would be worthless. Again, this is not even the problem, I don't expect you to understand these things, but I do expect you not to be rude when a tourist tells you this is annoying and makes them feel like a scam BECAUSE THEY ARE being ripped off. BUT BUT BUT what do you do? ' hmm let's make expose videos on Nepal and show how scammy this place is'' . See the problem here is, you can atleast show some courtesy or gratitude by showcasing some good place like maybe Harald bald does and promote this welcoming place along with your scam videos in a balanced way. Not that you don't show good stuff, but showing only bad stuffs will surely undermine all the good stuff Nepal has. Being a famous KZbinr we can expect better from you. You are assuming many things that have not been clarified in the video the first store clearly were making hand crafted thangka we have little to no information in the second store. Plus you also have to factor in quality of material, experience of the painter. This is probably the most crucial thing people from the west need to realize, you are going to a 3rd world country where there isn't proper governance like in the west so business practices are different, a big part of doing business in Nepal is bargaining. I think you just need to use a little common sense sometimes.

Love your video, Karl, because I do so much art buying when I travel. Your experience in Nepal is interesting---I've never had some guy approach me in the street to buy art from "an art school." However, your advice is fair warning: do NOT respond to folks who approach you on the street for business :). To add to previous comments, if you land in a country and are gone in a few days, it's really hard to find a high quality artist who is not using an expensive gallery, and will offer a great price to you. It really does take time. I was in Puerto Vallarta recently, asked around for a particular type of beaded art by the Huichol tribe, and went to an open-air market. I walked around for hours, found a family-run shop that was loaded with nice pieces, and bargained for several pieces at great prices. HOWEVER, later that day, I went into an actual art gallery, and the owner had beautiful pieces (better than the other shop) and was willing to give me unreal prices for the better pieces. It was too late---I had already had a representative piece of the Huichol tribe and could not buy another one. So, again, as a tourist with limited time you will make mistakes, but honestly, as long as you are getting something original that looks beautiful (not an out and out scam) you'll be ok.

@@magingi I stand by the comment I made about racism. One’s unconsciouses bias does not disappear because one has married another race. We are shaped by cultures and values we are brought up with, and many time people do not realize the unconscious bias one inhabitants. The west is nefarious in teaching people false stereotypes about people who are not similar to them. They may connote ones niceness as “scam” as Karl does in his video. Oh man it’s so difficult to explain this to people. All of us have been conditioned to think that western practices of business are correct. Practices outside of what occurs in the west is incorrect. Things people fail to realise is the western way of conducting business maybe correct for their country as they have proper governance and infrastructure. You honestly can’t carry that same mentality and go to a different country specially a developing one like ours. In most western countries you don’t even bargain, bargaining is a massive part of business in our country. The whole system of conducting business is different.

@@magingi bro you put into words so beautifully what I’ve been I’ve been thinking of lately. I’ve realised that in the west they are constantly “scamming” their population but because they are perceived to be governed by “policies and laws ” that we trust the system. To give you an example if you want to study in Australia as a international student you will have to pay more than double of what a domestic student will pay for the same content. Is that not a scam ? Just because they have made policies regarding international students they can charge us x3 the price ? Furthermore I complete my entire bachelors in English but when I try and get my registration I have to prove to the governing body that I can speak English ? So I end up paying 400 dollars for a test but wait for the test results come with a expiry date. As if to say that once my results expire I will magically forget to speak English so I have to spend another 400 dollars to prove that I can speak English.
