Lived in Nepal for a while and encountered this often as I worked in Thamel. All of this is really common however, there are things you can do to keep yourself safe and to have good relationships with the vendors who are there to make an honest living. Basically do not entertain anyone selling things in the street unless it's the little old ladies in the morning selling vegetables, milk, or tea. Secondly, do not go wandering out alone at night. This makes you look like someone who is looking for the illegal activities. Most Nepalis are in their house by sundown so they can make dinner and then go to bed so everyone that's out afterwards is part of the underground scene. Thirdly, if you don't want something don't entertain it by asking questions. Either ignore them and walk away or tell them chaahidaina which means "I don't want." They'll leave you alone and go on their way. There are things like this going on no matter where in the world you travel, but if you know how to keep yourself safe and follow the lead of the local you can enjoy all of the beautiful things that the place your visiting has to offer.

@NewZman233 жыл бұрын
@@nancydrew1882 Exactly my view Nancy Drew. Nepal is still one of the poorest countries in the world - even University educated people find it difficult to find a job in Kathmandu - and even if they do it will pay very little. My first visit to Nepal was in 1982 (and been back many times since then) and it was the same then - it was never a problem for me. In all of these encounter, if Karl had just ignored them and made no eye contact and walked on saying nothing they would have left him alone. Chances are most of these "street traders" (not scammers) have come from their villages where life is so hard. They probably have a wife and baby or two at home and a day on the streets of Thamel selling a little weed or hash to tourists will bring them enough money to survive for a week or two back in the village. Actually if we have to "blame" or shame anyone it is the tourists - it's all about supply and demand - the tourists (not all tourists of course) - they demand and an enterprising young Nepali supplies; better than robbing and stealing to survive. And we have to remember that until about 1974 marijuana (ganja) and hashish were legal and had been part of the culture of Nepal for hundreds of years. - Until the American government stepped in (concerned that some of their younger generation were travelling to Nepal to get stoned) and "bribed" the corrupt Nepali government with large amounts of money they called "aid" if they made weed and hash illegal. How ironical that today many states in the US (and other countries) have legalised weed and in fact make a lot of money out of weed smokers via taxes.

When I went to Nepal for the first time, back in 1987, it was way worse. At that time you had also illegal money changers, they gave a lot better exchange rate than the normal banks. Dance bars and girls where not there at that time. But like Karl says: stay away from these illegal things. You really don't want to end up in a Nepali jail.
@NewZman233 жыл бұрын
also me in 1982 - and 9 times since then. I used black market money changers all the time - such a better rate than the banks. $US100 bills were the best value to change. If I wanted weed I would get it from my friends who lived out of Kathmandu - we'd share a glass of Nepali chiya and a chillum 🙂
@MrBabooke3 жыл бұрын
I've been in Nepal 8 times, so far. The best money changers were the carpet shops! Changing money was a social thing, drinking a cup of tea, during the negotiaton. That changed in the early '90's when you had to show a receipt from the bank when you applied for a trekking permit or visa extention.

I think if you step out of thamel you would have a different experience.
@NewZman233 жыл бұрын
🙂Exactly. The corrupt US government bribed the corrupt Nepali government with promises of large amounts of dollars (they called it aid) if the young King Birendra made it illegal. Ironical that in many US states it is now legal - but not in Nepal. In my opinion these guys are harmless - just trying to make a living, while the still corrupt Nepali government wastes their time arguing about who will be leader and split the political parties into even smaller factions - it's an old trick - divide and rule ! Better these street traders do this than go out robbing and stealing to survive. I've visited Nepal 9 times since 1982 and I always stayed in Monumental Lodge in Freak St (Jochhen Tol). It's still there today but is now a private residence. I never had a problem with these guys - if you're not interested, just ignore them and walk on. And as you say, step out of Thamel and you will find the true "soul" of Nepal. I hope to return in 2022, but if I want some ganja I will ask my friends in the village - and chances are we will share a Nepali chiya and chillum together - and of course it will cost nothing, but a smile and a friendly "Namaste". Hi carl. I am Nepali and I am currently living in the USA. My American friend sent this video to me and it really feels bad when people portray my country as something which is partially true. If you go to Thamel in the evening and chat with people looking like you are looking for something more than food or place to rest, they will obviously think you are talking about women and drugs. Its so surprising that that you live in India and still do not think India has similar places like Thamel and maybe more in number. You are intentionally asking people what more kind of massages are available and what do they sell besides cigarettes. I have been in Thamel with tourist and we just go there, eat food and come back. Nobody stops and asks us abt drugs and women. You always get what you look for no matter which country you are in. Try doing the same in India and your country, and please post the video.

All places in the world will end up having these things whether its Shangai China (not sure) or Edo Japan or etc. Let's hope that in time with proper good honest governance, we will be able to eradicate these issues. I think most of its cause is the lack of opportunity for honest work. When people just want money, it would make less sense for them to fall to dishonest work if dishonest work ends up being less profitable than an honest work even with a capitalist mindset.

Specially Thamel has drawbacks due to hippies, druggists kinda tourists visiting over there. Spend your beautiful time visiting villages, climbing mountains, learning and understanding cultures in Nepal. Even in Thamel there are lots of unique places where you can spend your quality time with your friends and family too. If you roam around the edges of river definitely you will find sands around you. You just have to say "No thank you" or better nothing. Trust me, Its not that hard to ignore especially Nepalese. However, might be helpful to some people who are really helpless and cant decide what they are looking for. But do not forget, its becoz of some visitors who looked and expected those services in the past made these services available atm. There was a demand and the supply is there! So just mind your own business and hope you had a lovely time with your wife. Thank you... And yes will be very proud if you try to communicate in Nepali than Hindi...

Thamel is in Kathmandu. It is a haven for tourists visiting the city. It contains numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops that cater specifically to western tourists. It is located in the northern region of Kathmandu past the government district on Tridevi Marj. Although some consider it to be overcrowded it has been used by westerners since the 1970's when hippies in the region discovered it. Although now it has become quite commercial. Thamel is an easy walk from anywhere in central Kathmandu. Though the roads can be quite busy during the day, and traffic can be quite heavy.

You're worried about people selling weed? I normally like your videos but in the scheme of things to worry about... It's legal in Canada and that's probably the most peaceful place I can imagine. Not really worth half a complaint video. --Plus every major city has drug dealers. You can tell you're in a nice city if it's weed. You're lucky they weren't selling something else. It's a credit to the city a foreigner can walk around the dodgy areas and his main concern is weed. Been here two years and this is the first bad press I'm seeing about it honestly.

@@Gino_567 I don't know what a derelict prison is. You're probably a nice guy. I don't mean to be combative. But weed is a native plant here. It literally grows next to the mall, the military bases, on my neighbor's roof... It's nothing to be afraid of. Everyone's ancestors would be in terrible shape if it was a real problem. Most groups here did traditionally prohibit alcohol though. So there's a little context as to why I'm bothering to comment.

@@lineaayo i personally dont have an issue with weed. but it's still illegal in India though right?... and you're suggesting that foreigners shouldn't be afraid to get involved with it while they're visiting. Which may be true for India (as far as i can tell - its pretty lax and you can bribe cops if caught) My point is that giving advice to people that its ok for foreigners that dont know any better and aren't particularly street smart is not a good idea. This is how alot of people get locked up for life in countries that dont share the same sentiments on drugs we do.

@NewZman233 жыл бұрын
You don't need a tour; you can just travel to places like Daman and the western hill areas to find hillsides of ganja growing wild. And how ironical that it was the corrupt US government who in 1973, bribed the corrupt Nepali government to make cannabis illegal and now it's legal in many US states and still illegal in Nepal. I just hope one day that a progressive Nepali government can see the benefit of legalising and controlling cannabis growing and distribution and thereby providing jobs and income for hundreds of poor Nepalis and also bringing in taxes for the government.
