KARNIVOOL has the ability to separate themselves from other prog bands (obviously they are their own band) but they have such a unique mainstream sound with complex rhythms and songwriting. It's so cool.

I've literally never heard of this band, and I'm usually a huge nerd about this stuff! That's what I love about this channel man, you cover so much interesting shit that nobody else is talking about. On that note, if you wanna hear a prog song that is unlike anything you've ever heard, I would strongly recommend Dance by Cellar Darling. Probably the only song you'll ever hear with a guitar solo, flute solo, piano solo, and a hurdy gurdy solo. Edit: Just noticed you HAVE covered one of their songs before that I somehow missed, great choice too, you really are the best music channel on youtube.

The crash cymbal is extremely precise! Use it to switch between counting the 1/16 notes as 123-123-123-123 or 1234-1234-1234 - ir if you prefer, switching between 4x3 beats and 3x4 beats in each bar.

Karnivool has a fantastic live version of this song on the "triple j" channel. Its a more mellowed out version. To me its such an organic performance that brings me great joy. It's a blast just seeing them all next to eachother jamming out. I'd love your reaction to that(performance starts at 1:15). I love this song, my personal favorite of theirs. The first 7-8 times I heard it I misplaced the downbeat with 1/16 note. I learned the song like that, knew the whole thing by heart. Then suddenly one time it clicked into place, and I understood where the downbeat really was. For a few listens I could switch back and forth between the two, but now, now for the life of me I can't get back to how I counted it before.

Karnivool hasn't been to the US in a long time, so they're one of my grail groups that I still have yet to see live. Great musicians all, and Steve Judd is an amazingly overlooked drummer. I could see how the off-beat hat and snare shuffle could make this sound complex, and I'm not 100% sure, but I just count it in 4/4 with that pumping kick. As a drummer of 30 years, I have a real tough time with some of Judd's grooves. The pulse of Change Pt 2, with that kick in 4 and hat in 5, REALLY throws me off.

This track does a sneaky on the listener when first hearing it. The instinct is to listen to it as like a 3/4 beat with 3 crotchet/quarter notes as the main pulse and that's reinforced a few times such as in the post-chorus, but it's actually 6/8 with 4 dotted semiquaver/eighth notes as the main pulse.

This is 12/8 (or triplets in 4/4) shuffle-kind of a feel from beginning to end. It's just that the four on the floor bass drum is drowned in the mix, and it may cause the illlusion of 16th note subdivision in 3/4 instead of triplets in 4/4 (or 12/8).

All of the prog stuff I like has always been tricky but their stuff on the Themata and Sound Awake albums have a little more clarity to me. I totally get what you mean. Themata has several kick ass, almost pure hard rock songs on it. Still sounds like Karnivool but there's a lot more of a pattern to something like Fear of the Sky.
