aha I can relate, personally i listen to music in this specific order - 1. Musicianship - Drums, Bass, Rhythm, then lead/s 2. Production recording and quality, engineering choices and mixing 3. Vocal performance - Vocal talent, Melodic construction and note selection 4. Lyrics - if all the above have impressed me I will invariably learn the lyrics sound familiar?

Its so cool you did another Karnivool track so soon! As a drummer myself, I absolutely Adore the rhythmic escapades the guy behind the kit gets up to, as what he does beat/rhythmic loop wise is definitely something of his own, especially considering he usually plays without using the double pedal (with this particular song being quite the exception, which makes me excited for the future), and yet how Massive and Menacing his overall attack and precision is. However, the entire band are ridiculously masterful, which can be proven by observing how Tight their musicianship is overall. If you want to hear even more examples of them being at the frontier of _time_ then I would like to suggest you try something from their 2013 output Asymmetry, which is filled with material that to most ears might seem impenetrable due to how much they like to switch it up on that record. "A M WAR" is a fave of mine, as it actually has driven me to tears from how emotionally relatable it sounded to me one particular morning.

So it must be coming up on 15 plus years. A friend of mine had recommended them, I'd heard them on commercial radio in Perth. I liked what I heard but I hadn't really been hooked in. Me and a bunch of mates went to the Big Day Out, a popular outdoor music festival in Australia at the time. One of our mates dragged us to the Karnivool stage. They were playing around 5pm on one of the smaller stages right in the back of the festival. The first song they payed was "Themata". I was standing there with a good mate of mine and we are both reasonable (if not good) amateur musicians. About a minute in to the set we looked at each other in astonishment. I've been a massive fan ever since.

While the two bands are pretty different the bass sound reminded me of a couple of tracks from Glassjaw, they've had a very similar tone in some of their albums iirc. Really interesting experimental musical parts and excellent musicianship whether it be vocals, guitars, drumming in Glassjaw as well, similarly Justin Beck likes to have the bass even somewhat more dominant and use the guitar sometimes as a higher pitched "soundscape" with the help of the pedal - especially in the latest album.
