So i've never done competitive IRL motorsports and last time I did any gokarting at all was at a birthday party or something like 15+ years ago, but I took up sim racing and rally games in 2020, and seeing this Andretti quote and shifting my mentality to that helped my lines SOOOOO much. I changed my thinking from a mentality of rather than simply "slowing down" with braking to using the brake to distribute the car's weight and convert forward momentum to angular momentum (especially on any type of loose surface). Even on the simulator getting a feel for how you're using the brakes to distribute the weight and convert momentum to your advantage is a big step to improving your lines, lap times, and tactics. DISCLAIMER: I am not good at sim racing by any means, i still fuck up and crash out on a regular basis, BUT i have made an improvement over the years (altho my current iRatings don't show that due to a recent period of just trying WAY Too hard when i needed a break LOLOLOL)

Brakes allow for forward weight transfer. In a kart it's important to lift the inside rear wheel to free the engine as it does not have a diff. The outside wheel allows faster wheel speed thus engine speed. More engine speed means the engine will be closer to it's optimal engine speed and you will be faster out of the corner. Now sliding keeps both rear tires on the ground and also means your speed is = to the average speed of both tires. It could work for corners that you are opening up, but at that point you shouldn't be slowing down anyway.

I did this recently. Did some practise runs with friends. They were more accustomed to the "cruising" style, staying off the brakes. Gently slowing for a corner, no brakes, gently speed out. I was taking the opposite approach: hard on the brakes late in the corner, twist the kart around, hard on the gas exiting. My lap times were faster by a second or two on a small track. My approach is probably harder on the kart - the brakes and tyres - but it was slightly faster.
@Mittis_bot Жыл бұрын
I would say this aspect of "Not Braking" is more or less depenent on the karts and tracks. I have been to indoor places where you quite literally cannot make some corners without using the brakes, and other tracks where there are 0 braking points on the entire hotlap. K1 for example you can pretty much take the entire hotlap without touching the brakes as the motor slows the kart down enough to make most corners.

These were older style carts not the ultra fast ones they got now. There were more of us than there were carts. So we had to wait in line for a turn. I kept noticing they had this one cart that they kept to the side the only one. I asked what was wrong with it. One of the guys there told me that the brakes were completely gone. I said can I ride it anyway? He was like sure, you just won't have breaks, no one else wants to ride it. Not only was I the fastest guy on the course... I never had to wait in line to ride... I just kept on riding as everyone else kept on getting on and off and waiting in line for their next turn...lol

I'm a very heavy guy, and I almost never use brakes on indoor karts. I'm so heavy that if I let the drive axle slow down the motor takes forever to get back up to speed. I'm much faster if I move the seat all the way forward and lean forward at every turn entry. That let's the rear slide out with less steering input, and it keeps the rear wheel speed up so I'm not bogging the motor down. The first time I discovered this, I went from 1:07 to like 0:99 and change. I started passing guys who weigh 50 lbs. less.

As said above, I've done a lot of indoor karting and definitely going sideways heats up tyres MUCH more. Will take more than a lap of "rolling" for them to recover

The throttle "curve" in rental karts is usually quite poor as it's usually done by cable. Try to learn to modulate your throttle, one long lift to 70 or 60% is usually better than the complete short lifts. Try to visualise the pedal to an actual percentage and listen to the engine noise, make small variations every lap and feel/listen to the effect they have.
@Cardiakk Жыл бұрын
Well, karts don't have anywhere near the horsepower to benefit from modulating the throttle, unless it's a 2 stroke or you're racing on a wet surface. In karting, being smooth and precise on the wheel is everything. When you make the decision of going back to the throttle, your approach to the corner had better been the correct approach and a highly experienced racer knows how to make the correct decision over 90% of the time. The instant you're back on the throttle, you need to be 100% committed because when you pedal or modulate the throttle with such low horsepower, it's more costly in the long run than just calculating the proper approach from the beginning without having to lift. In high horsepower applications, it's beneficial to modulate the throttle because the horsepower helps in rotating the car through the corner and modulating the throttle also keeps it settled because you're minimizing wheel spin which is lost time.
@edgarrosario8346 Жыл бұрын
Im gonna have to disagree on that statement if you are in a proper electric rental kart OTL storms are decent.. you have enough tq to modulate your throttle inputs to maintain the speed not only going in but going out of the corner as well. One big lift, zero counter and a couple pumps while rotating the kart in the apex will keep the momentum going. So long you get the weight off the inside by leaning out of lifting your bum a lil off the seat... But on gas powered yeah the fall off way to fast.

I let off before the corner that’s all the braking I need and a bit of scrubbing. 😁 Most tracks don’t need literally any braking but the new electric karts scrubbing doesn’t matter as much because they have instant torque. The clutches in these crappy low powered karts need higher rpm to engage the clutch so that’s what kills your speed.

What about lift/engine brake vs brake? I had never gone karting and went from high 27's to 25.0X in 3 races (roughly 30 or so laps) only using lift braking. I was using an electric kart, and when braking while accelerating the kart would dramatically slow down, to the point where in few cases it brought me to a near full stop, because I didn't notice I was applying the brake. I'm 31, drive manual, and have plenty of experience driving on and off road. Yet I'll be honest, I had a hard time not just ignoring the brake due to accidently touching it and losing momentum. By the way, I used a different kart each race and by my third I had decided to keep my foot off the brake completely, and achieved my best times. Karting was fun but for roughly 50 bucks for 2 races lasting maybe 5-10 minutes including waiting, go twice a month and you just spent 1,200 on karting in a year. Count me in for the one free birthday race plus maybe 2-3 paid races same day. I would much rather save the cash an buy another cheap dirt bike, another gun, a car/bike mod, or put it towards any other hobby that actually comes home or goes outdoors with me, at my discretion. Sorry for the rant, stay safe and stay strong out there brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ loves you.

@Jortio Жыл бұрын
No arguing with the points made here, since there is no denying the benefits of braking. But on the flipside, there are indoor carts out there with underpowered engines that are incredibly slow to pick up (the non electric ones with too little torque at low RPM), in which case braking less or no braking means you can keep the RPM in the optimum range for much faster pick up out of corners. That can more than compensate for the downside of not braking mentioned here. Again, it depends on the carts. With most indoor cart tracks moving or having moved to electric, this argument has indeed been settled though.

You are getting slower times without using the brakes because you are still driving the cars the same way you do with brakes. Try entering the turns wider and turning sharper once you hit the apex while also powering through, full throttle as soon as you turn sharply. The reason you are slowing down while skidding g is because you lost momentum by turning in before the apex due to your position so close to the smaller portion of the curve.

Traction is a coefficient of three factors: Braking, accelerating, and handling. This coefficient can only max out at 100% ie; only up to 100% of the tires grip can be used at any given moment. Only doing one of the three factors at any given time gets you the most grip for that application. Introducing multiple factors at the same time, such as braking and turning, the grip is split. This is referred to as "balance." This being said and agreed upon, I think the major contributing factor to your results here is your driving stile off-brake. You compare the two videos, and you actually have more off throttle time than brake time in the braking run, and more off-throttle time than the "no-brake" lap. Your time increases in the corners and fast exits and rotation are due to the off-throttle time. If you recreate the "no-brake" run but focus on making up for the no-brakes by just lifting and rotating (instead of just gassing all the way to the brake point), the results will be much less dramatic and much closer. Especially in a gokart. Things get weird with LSDs and modern transmissions. (You can slow the car down with engine resistance off-throttle and not sacrifice traction coefficent).

Hi. Why not try out another video of with braking and no braking by taken out all the brake parts...This will reduce the weight by 1 kg.

I work in a karting circuit and I can tell that so many people really think that they are faster with no braking and when I tell them the opposite they think that Im joking around or making them go slower for some reason. Easy 80% people believe that

thank you for these tips! one of my best friends is a rain motorcycle rider so he has a much more refined muscle memory feel for tyre grip and preventing drifts/slides than i do for these go karts. but i got few little tricks up my sleeve from years of watching red bull's daniel ricciardo and max verstappen constantly late breaking and bullying on valltterri bottas's faster merc. i am on avg still .1 tenth a lap slower than my bud in qualifying

It's kind of strange how some people think karts play by different laws of physics just because they're smaller and lighter than a car. I'm convinced the people who hold this opinion has only ever driven an indoor rental.
