Here is a few tips with using colored pencils: *Draw lines close together *Don't lift your pencil until your done with one section and ready to move on to the next. *Make sure all the lines are going in the same direction. I'm not the best with traditional art(since I am a digital artist), but I hope this helps :)
@PhoenAstra6 жыл бұрын
I don't know how many times I hear watercolor/marker artists say the same thing, "Oh, I don't like the texture of colour pencils give when you use them." You need to keep layering them. You need to work in a circular motion, instead of a linear one. White is your friend, especially with blending and lightening colours. Also, there is watercolor paints that have granulation, meaning it gives a texture. Not all watercolours are smooth looking when applied.

ColourfulKadam YES!!! Thank you!

Snow White you're welcome. I'm tired of hearing artists who know nothing about colour pencils and complain.
@joannaalvarado66496 жыл бұрын
Exactly! couldn't have said it better. kind of triggered me how she used the pencils
@breadbake88966 жыл бұрын
ColourfulKadam I think she mentioned trying the circle techno around 6:13, but it is totally true that colored pencils get a bad rap by a lot of artist that haven’t taken the time to learn the technique. A lot of artists starting out use them the same way they used them in grade school so of course they don’t get good results, they should learn actual techniques just like how they don’t use grade school tech with stuff like watercolor
@PhoenAstra6 жыл бұрын
bread bake the original comment that I made is very similar to one I made on DrawingWiffWaffles video on this same scrawlrbox and no one really agreed with me. So thanks and I made the comment before she mentioned the technique, but it really doesn't matter because she failed at that said technique.
@AngelicDirt6 жыл бұрын
Tortillions, napkins, or even your finger are your friend. I love colored pencils, especially smudging and blending them. They can almost look painterly. But it takes a TON of layering, is all. *GASP* ... Hatch is a girl?!? :O
@sjsosokdksksk6 жыл бұрын
If you don't have a tortillion, I've used cotton ear swabs before. I know it sounds kind of gross, but they aren't used or covered in earwax yet so why not, eh?
@m0rkm0rk6 жыл бұрын
Angelic Dirt I love watercolor and colored pencils and with both, blending is pretty easy and gives a really nice effect. I haven't used tortillions since middle school because we would do lots of pencil drawings. Also I was very surprised at the gender revelation too. I'm kinda new so I was shocked. Hatch is a really cute character though.
@m0rkm0rk6 жыл бұрын
Angelic Dirt then again maybe Hatch just has a more feminine look. This isn't the first time I've seen characters like that. It's a pretty cool concept.

And Kasey if you want a smooth texture on your colour pencil work small circular motions do the job and the more you layer the more pigment you get. But still fun video!

Colored Pencils can definitely give you a smooth look (that is, there aren't any streaks the way you've got, but you can still see the graininess of the wax and pigment). It just takes a lot of patience, practice, and layering, so maybe they just aren't right for you with your watercolor and digital background :)

Actually, you create a better look using a smaller circular motion and slowly build up colour.

Made me actually remember some things from my childhood I forgot about. I remember making a two piece moving pucture where the top paper is rolled around a pencil then fanning the pencil back and forth across the rolled paper to flip quickly between the two images making it change/move. Another thing it made me think of was like a plastic sheet that when drawn on with just the plastic tool, the plastic turned black and when you pulled the plastic away from the backing the image vanished, then you could draw again.

@gabrielaizaguirre64656 жыл бұрын

A way to get some smooth lay down is to burnish, which you do by pressing hard onto the paper until you get a dark color. You can also work in small circles to keep the soft look, it just takes a really long time. You can get some powder blender for colored pencils or blend it out with odorless mineral spirits as well.

@NiaLepre6 жыл бұрын
Your not supposed to do circles to make it “even” or have “less texture”😫 you just go in the direction your skin or fur is going. Throughout the layers you can just blend it out and add detail. Color pencils are rarely used alone usually people have a copic based layer and use the color pencils to just add details😶 im 11 but ive experienced with alot of supplies 🙃

I love colored pencil. I'n not one to color my sketches though. However if I do, for the most part it's with colored pencil. I also love water color but I've never been good with painting so I used the pencils. The way to get a smooth colored penciled texture is to color in circles. This way when viewing you can't tell which way you colored it. It cross hatches in every direction yk!

colored pencil texture depends on the paper. I have a sketchbook with the smoothest paper ever and there isn't any texture at all and that's the same across brands and quality of pencils. the color doesn't absorb into the paper as much and doesn't co down quite as bright or thick, but it's smooth as silk.

Lots of people are saying to use circular motion with pencils, but I would like to say that I don't think they need to be circles as long as you don't go crazy with broad motions. I personally find it easier to keep an equal amount of pressure when going back and forth in one direction, but doing so in small motions. I also find it easier to fill in bigger areas like this, as going in circles on big surfaces results in my case in uneven pressure and leaving darker marks here and there. I only use circles on really small surfaces. And to anyone thinking that going in one direction might leave strokes, it never did for me.

@Claragonza36 жыл бұрын
I do watercolors and colored pencils You can really get a smooth coloring with just layering and not working on stripes, pushing harder. I personally prefeer color pencils because that smooth surface, you can try to get better at it and who knows, you might like em! Btw, you'd like soft color pencils better because they are easier to layer and you don't need to push that hard to get a smooth surface.

As a bit of advice, when using colored pencil, use it in one direction. (Left and right, or up and down, etc.) Try to avoid doing little circles and curvy lines. You can do some curved lines in the same direction of long shapes. This will give a smoother, less messy texture for the colored pencil art. Hope this works for you if you wanna try ^-^
@ashtonlathery2206 жыл бұрын
getting a smooth color with colored pencils is hard but theres a thing called burnishing where you press down very hard. this creates a flat color. however, burnishing is usually makes the color appear very dark so to get a flat color without this you would lay down the color pencil a little darker then you would like then go over it with a white colored pencil which lightens it and also smooths and blends it out, creating a flat color

Casey, it’s very easy to take away the texture of colour pencils, simply use a little OMS (odourless mineral spirits.) such as Sansador or zest it for example. Dampen a synthetic taklon brush, dab the brush on some tissue paper to remove the excess, then blend the colour pencil.
