This was an awesome video! i learned a lot! Clearly swords can be a deadly throwing weapon, but much like any katana technique, it requires a large amount of precision to fully utilize the blade! I think ill stick to knives and axes for now, but in a fight i cant imagine getting rid of my main weapon, I could probably do some damage to someone if a throw a gun hard enough, but its gonna be more useful in my hand!

As Master Jakub said, katana throwing was a part of a blade throwing art. It's an amazing episode! You've linked two of my favorite subjects, so blade throwing and old Japanese culture. Little medical comment. The skin, even though it looks very fragile, it's quite tough. When you start actually putting injections and IVs in people, most students get a little surprise in the fact that a very thin needle needs a very, very, very tiny "oomph" to penetrate. Once inside though, there's almost no "real protection" and a pointy object, even if it barely pierced the skin, will still have a high chance of hitting part of an organ and cause severe damage.
@WwarpfirewW5 ай бұрын
Great point! Most people underestimate how dangerous it is, for example human heart is only 12mm to 26mm far from chest wall, depending on breathing movement, so even the small piercing can be lethal.

There was a movie from the 80s called Ladyhawke, starring Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. In the movie, Hauer's character would throw his bastard sword like a spear. He even killed the bad guy like this. And thanks for mentioning Musashi. I have a book on my kindle covering his throwing techniques. The most famous story involves him fighting a kusarigama expert and Musashi throwing his wakizashi and ending the fight. Thanks to both of you for a very educational episode.

I think if you were running through a battlefield picking up fallen soldiers katanas and chucking them at other combatants it would be worthwhile. But if your katana was your primary weapon and it was a one shot deal....it would be a profoundly BAD idea to throw it.

Katanas are so hard to get ahold of that are authentic cuz everything is a mall sword does Master Jacob ever play around with like a machete? Or like a paring knife? Not implying it's the opinion of Adam but a lot of people these days tend to think that just because something can be technically used in a certain way that it was designed that way either as a primary or secondary function. You can throw any melee weapon. You can throw a sledgehammer as a spear. "But it would make more sense to throw it with rotation". No it would make more sense to not even throw a sledgehammer at all. You can throw it as a spear. And it'll be impractical and non-optimal as absolute fuck. But it's possible. You can assign whacky niche functionalities to just about anything. You can use a roll of ductape as a window scrapper. But why would you?
