The main connection between the two bands is that Jonas ( the Singer of Katatonia ) and Mikael have been best friends for a very long time. Mikael had also done the growls for Katatonia's 2nd album Brave Murder Day. They ( being Mikael, Jonas and Anders the co-founder and Guitarist of Katatonia ) had also formed Bloodbath with Dan Swano after years of discussing some sort of collaboration.

Doom metal - Starts in the 80s with bands like Trouble, Saint Vitus, and Candlemass who were heavily influenced by Black Sabbath. Doom metal basically caries on Sabbath's legacy of slower, sludgy, super heavy riffs. Death metal - Also starts in the 80s as a kind of next step/evolution of thrash with more extreme (typically growled) vocals. Possessed's Seven Churches is often called the first death metal album, but later bands like Death (one of the all-time great metal bands in any genre), Obituary, et al. really solidified the sound. Black metal - Also starts in the 80s. Black metal is basically metal's punk music: it starts with Venom who were hugely influenced by Motorhead. Then Bathory lays the foundations of the genre (lo-fi production, high pitched extreme/scream vocals, tremolo-based simple riffs) that later evolves into the "2nd Wave" black metal bands from Norway (Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Immortal). All of these genres have a ton of sub-genres because they all get hybridized with other metal genres, so there are many bands that can even be called blackened death doom metal. Early Katatonia were basically death-doom metal, but then they evolved into alternative rock and eventually into a kind of proggy gothy alternative rock. This album is arguably the one where they first started transitioning to their later proggy/gothy alt. rock style. The albums immediately before this were more straight-forward alternative rock, and the ones after start getting proggier.

Another connection is members from both bands participating in the old school death band Bloodbath. A third connection is Mikael and Jonas Renkse being best pals since ages and ages.

To help with some of your questions: The big Opeth connection is that Mikael did guest vocals (demon only) on their early album ‘Brave Murder Day’. Doom Metal: Slow is the key. Katatonia’s very early releases fit the subgenre. Death Metal: Heavy, deep demon vocals, fast tempos. Black Metal: less heavy, but usually very fast, very harsh, high-pitched demon vocals, more atmosphere. Those are severe over-simplifications, but that’s the bare bones of them

Also, something to consider re: Katatonia eras: Early 90s: Death/Doom, basically all demon vocals, probably will be a rough listen for you. Brave Murder Day: Almost black metal in atmosphere, but with very straightforward rock drums, Mikael on demon vocals, probably won’t be your favorite, but it’s one of my favorites. Mid to late 90’s: An easier listen for you, more of what you like, but Jonas hadn’t really found his voice as a singer yet and tends to have a gentle occasionally off-key thing with his vocals, but that’s part of the charm for me. Early 00s to now: This is going to be your go-to stuff based on how you felt about My Twin. Anything from the Viva Emptiness or later will be a safer bet than anything earlier.
@Meshuggapeth
@Meshuggapeth 2 жыл бұрын
Katatonia is friends with Opeth, both from Stockholm. Mikael even provided demon vocals on Kat’s second album, which was their last to feature screams prominently. From the same album as My Twin, called The Great Cold Distance, try the similar “Deliberation.” From their next album, Night Is the New Day, you could do “Onward Into Battle.” Doom rock/metal was around before death metal. It generally has slow, ominous riffs. It’s inspired by early Black Sabbath. (There is such a thing as death-doom that combined this approach with growls and faster drumming.) Death metal grew out of thrash. It’s generally fast, scary and uses growls. It’s often technical and precise. Black metal was kind of like the punk rock rebellion against death metal. It has a more rough, DIY approach, less of a polished sound, less technicality, and more strictly satanic lyrical themes.

I don't know if I was the first to recommend them, but I did on one of your early Type O reactions I'm pretty sure. Or maybe Opeth. Can't remember. Wouldn't have chosen this particular song, but it is a good one and is definitely a good representation of that era of their sound. If you want some good Halloween stuff, good autumn, gloomy shit for October, I HIGHLY recommend a journey through their album Brave Murder Day, in which Mikael from Opeth reveals a bit of a different demon over a doomy, black/death metal that's more like The Cure or Slowdive than Cannibal Corpse or Emperor. This band is a journey for sure and I'm fuckin stoked that you liked it so much.

Death metal: fast, chainsaw riffs, double kick drums, growling (demon) vocals, gory themes Doom metal: usually slow or super slow, massively distorted guitars, reverberating drums, soaring cleans or growling vocals, pondering lyrics Black metal: faster than death metal, tremolo picking riffs, blast beat drums (tupatupatupa), shrieking/screaming vocals, satanic/pagan/nature lyrics Katatonia were among the prime movers of the death/doom scene before ditching demon vocals and experimenting with a lighter sound, Tool vibes, alternative, some electronics and progressive in later records

Known about this band for a long time so I wanted to recommend a song or two from what is considered three of their best albums, along with a brief description of the song. This was the original line-up and the band at its best. Hope this can help a little in deciding what to choose out of their vast catalogue. 'Dispossession' -- great opener to a great album. 'Chrome' -- hard-hitting song with a hypnotic feel. And 'Tonight's Music' -- a beautiful, slowed down piece. From the album 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' 'Burn the Remembrance' -- nice song with an unearthly sound and melody to it. 'Wealth' -- eclectic song with great aggressive and tranquil moments. From the album 'Viva Emptiness' 'Deliberation' -- a semi-heavy piece with brilliant words and melodies. 'Follower' -- some of the most tasteful guitars and vocals on this one. And 'Unfurl' -- an almost blissful aura surrounding a peaceful melody. From the album 'The Great Cold Distance'

Doom metal is fascinating because of the variations: You have the first wave with bands like Black Sabbath (the perfect example is Electric funeral) and Candlemass then it was divided into: Death/doom metal: Extremely slow songs with demons, first era Katatonia, first Anathema, first My dying bride Stoner Doom: even slower, sometimes demons. The best example is the band Sleep Funeral Doom: Slow, melancholic with extremely nasty (deep) vocals Bands: Ahab, Funeral and Esoteric and finally Epic Doom: A little faster paced and more heavy metal sounding Bands : Isole and Solitude Aeturnus

Doom: this vibe, slow paces, harsh vocals/clean vocals, intentional repetition, entrancing, dark/depressing Death: heavy, fast, low growls, reasonably good production, riff based, gory, violence, anger Black: Atmospheric, wall of sound, strident, less riff based, more distorted chords, intentional lower quality production (it adds), high screams/growls, nature, paganism, satanism The 3 of em are good, but the most artistic and profound of the 3 is definitely Black Metal in my opinion (much of the opeth sound in the first 8 albums comes from Black Metal, but specifically in My Arms Your Hearse, third record)

This is my first time hearing this song as well. I never really got into this era of the band, their sound definitely changed from their first couple of albums which were more death/doom. I'm more familiar with Dance of December Souls and Brave Murder Day. The difference between Doom, Death, and Black metal. Doom metal is usually slower tempo, heavy chunky riffs. You could think of Black Sabbath as the foundation for the genre. There are different types of doom metal that also mix in other elements: Stoner Doom, Gothic Doom (Type O Negative), Death/Doom. Death metal started with bands like Possessed and Death. Death Metal originally sounded a bit thrash metal-ish, like Slayer on steriods. Over time it evolved and became more varied. Some bands took it into more extreme territory (Cannibal Corpse), technical/progressive territory (Death, Atheist), some bands mixed grindcore with death metal (early Carcass, Napalm Death), some even created Melodic Death Metal (Carcass, At the Gates). Black Metal is usually a faster tempo, lots of tremolo picking, shrieking vocals. There's often an emphasis on atmosphere and more raw recordings and production. Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, and Satyricon are examples of Black Metal. I'm not a black metal expert though, could never get into much. I prefer Death and Doom.

Hey Lauren! Since you enjoyed this particular song so much, you should definitely check out their latest album. Decima, Old Heart Falls and Shifts are sooooo into this same mood!

Death metal spawned a child called melodic death metal which is more like gothic metal and doom metal is just more depressive and melancholic melodic death metal. They're all precious to me 🤘🥰 Doom metal is more about theme than style really, there's some really heavy stuff there (like early paradise lost and my dying bride) and also stuff like this one :)

My favorite video on the Internet hahaha! Love your expression, reminds me of the first time I heard this song. I thought I might need to be in a certain mood to be able to enjoy it and I didn't at all. Are you plan on continuing? If you do, please please check out In the White, probably my 3rd favorite cuts from this album, you seem to love bass so you'll love that. Tbf there are so many to choose from!

I put this song on my Spotify playlist after a listen on the Stockholm radio station, Bandit Radio. That must have been ten years ago and I went back to it this day because I was looking for a song by, Shinedown. No wonder it´s a Swedish band....

Definitely musician connection. Mikael was the vocalist for one Katatonia album and they all shared the stage as Bloodbath. Mikael’s always been a fan of Katatonia. They are, in my opinion, one of the finest bands in the world.

Pay attention to view counts in terms of figuring out what to listen to... people will suggest the most obscure songs from Katatonia... This is my favorite band on earth but the fans on here are weird sometimes. Pay attention to view counts on videos/songs - None will be super high, they don't get the attention they deserve but view count is a good gauge to measure what to pick.

Listening to Opeth for so many years really primed me to love Katatonia when I first heard them. Not because of metal or growls, but because their music is so sublime as hard rock music that I didn't know it was possible for a band to make music like that without using extreme elements (in their later albums). In that sense, they're not like Opeth, but both bands make beautiful music that I didn't think could be made.

I think you should review something like Takeover or Behind The Blood, next. It's on a whole other level, although I got to know them with My Twin and The Great Cold Distance is still my favorite album, all things considered.

they had roots in death metal but have mellowed out over time (I think it is great), I would say you would die or the "fall of hearts" album and also "dead end kings"... but also check out the acoustic concert they did "Sanctitude" ... amazing... I think, based on this, you would like "Voivod - Angel Rat" ... probably not the rest of the catalog perhaps... but definitely that album..

Never saw your channel before. Please try "Old Hearts Fall" from these guys. or "Serein" for something a bit more upbeat. Doom Metal: Slow, plodding tempo with depressing lyrics. Death Metal: Down-tuned, heavily distorted guitars with low-growly vocals. Black Metal: Clean guitars with high, screechy vocals.

To my felllow Katatonia fans out there, "Discouraged Ones" is my favorite album of their's . They are all great but that is my go to CD from them. Music, Cats and Coffee has no idea how tremendous these guys are yet. Im glad to see her finally getting into them. Next needs to be Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson.......another link to Opeth.

You are saying it correctly, it's like the land of being catatonic. But the k makes it edgy lol Opeth and Katatonia are friends in real life. The opeth vocalist has stood in for katatonias vocalist for a whole album when he blew his voice out. Back when they screamed.. Its a great album too! The simplest way I can describe it is Doom metal is usualy slower and focuses more on tragedy, where Deathmetal is usualy faster paced and focuses more on brutality. Black metal is usually satanic with an intentional grainy low quality sound. But there are a million nuances to each and each have a lot of crossover. It can be genuinely hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Sweden ? Doom ? One band to check - Candlemass. Beware of the different vocalists though as they don't sound the same at all. Would also recommend Anathema for a chilled vibe but may be too commercial sounding from what you have been listening to. Awesome nevertheless.
