It was emotional manipulation plain and simple. "There are bigger problems out there ☞ holding me accountable for my actions is frivolous of you ☞ if you truly care about such issues you will leave me alone to go fight the good fight." Yeah I bet you'd like it if you guilt-tripped people into letting you get away with your bs again, wouldn't you Jeff?

I was racist. There. Look, I did it. It's true! And like, I was raised in white society, I'm white and there was very little expectation of me to not be. I wasn't wearing a hood, I didn't think poc were evil and bad and I needed to keep away from them or anything like that. It was more normal, it was more insidious. I don't know if I ever used the n word, I don't think it was ever a thing for me, but I would be OFFENDED if anyone said I couldn't. How dare they, isn't that the REAL racism? Saying I can't do something because of MY skin? It was that kind of racism, the kind where you don't have to acknowledge it and any of the poc friends you do have know to not call you on it because you'll get defensive and accusatory and act like the victim and they have learned to swallow their pride to be friends with white people. You can't really move on unless you acknowledge that was YOU. You don't know who that person was? It was YOU Jeffrey, put your damn name on it like it is one of your lipsticks. That was you. Sure, a younger, angrier you. But you. Own that, it is literally the least you can do. You can't really move forward if you can't take responsibility for the past. Don't distance yourself, don't diminish it, look at it hard, look at how difficult it has probably been for POC to be around you, the microagressions they have to endure just to be in your presence. Then try harder. Not for PR. But because that is what you owe the world.
@elliejackson6864
@elliejackson6864 4 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to acknowledge that you are racist. That the thing you are fighting against resides within you. But admitting it leads to self reflection and hopefully admitting and accepting your own racism as real you can try to remove it from your life and notice it more.
@elliejackson6864
@elliejackson6864 4 жыл бұрын
Because I, a white woman, was born into a society that valued me more because of my ethnicity, and of course I learn from society. It molds you. But hopefully by acknowledging these imperfections and biases within our own minds we can move forward and be more aware of them, which will start a lifelong journey of creating a better future for yourself and others. Be open to what people have to say. Racism in America isn’t just blatant “I dislike you because you are black”, it is much more insidious than that. It is coming up with excuses to dislike another race usually based on stereotypes and prejudices. If you don’t acknowledge they are there, you can’t help get rid of them.

zeedoubleu Employing black people is not proof of anti-blackness though. There are racists with black friends, black romantic partners, and even black children. Who you surround yourself with can definitely indicate certain things. But if someone is actively saying, believing, and doing racist thoughts and actions 🤔 that speaks louder. So who knows if he’s nice to his individual employees? I’ve had people be nice to me that don’t see me as an equal human sooooo

Okay I’m not talking about Jeffree Star here but how can you prove youre not racist in this case? Shouldnt hiring people or supporting businesses for example be based on merits of those people/businesses? What does it have to do with race? I know people throw this argument around a lot but im just genuinely interested on how to support race equality without it looking a bit artificial. Edit. I’m also from Finland so our problems with racism are miniscule here, but for example there has been thrown around this phrase ”support black businesses” and i totally get it, but at the same time, like i said, doesnt it seem a bit forced

Whenever he “apologizes” he just makes a blanket statement saying he’s sorry for his words and actions while never addressing and analyzing specific instances, which truly shows how much he hasn’t actually changed. Hearing all these non black people making themselves the victim for being racist is just embarrassing. When I was younger, i used to say the n-word frequently. I hate hearing people say "I didn't know better", because that's such a weak excuse. I knew better. I knew the word hurt black people, but I just didn't care. I felt entitled to say the word because I wasn't white and ignored people telling me I was racist and wrong. If black people find out you have a racist past and refuse to be friends with you or watch your content you have to accept that. We are not owed anything. Part of growing and unlearning racism means accepting responsibility for your actions and that includes the consequences. Being an "ally" isn't meant to be fun. It's going to be a long and uncomfortable process. The first step is taking responsibility, not making excuses for yourself and definitely not making yourself the victim. The n-word is meant to hurt and degrade black people. It's time for non black people to own up to our bullshit and anti-blackness.

Ive never had that problem because, like kat said, you have to ENGAGE with them regularly which makes the algorithm suggest others similar to them. I feel really weird about KZbin’s recommendations, mixed feelings really. I never had to *seek out* white creators to get them recommended to me, but I do have to actively seek black creators to get them recommended. It felt weird to specifically search for and interact with creators based on skin color, but that’s literally what I had to do to get diversity in my feed. I just want to watch good content, regardless of race/gender/sexual orientation/disabilities/etc. but KZbin promotes primarily white males🤷‍♀️

Oh I tried I didn't get any recommended until I started following GaLm and Mac the problem is they never got recommended to me in the first place as default. I had to go out of my way to look for them that should not have to be required. It was only after that that I got recommended Kat and it's not like I haven't watched and liked similar stuff as Kat is doing before so she should have been recommended to me a long time ago but I only found her after youtube figured out that I didn't care about the race of the person I watched as long they had good content. It's just the default seems to be prioritizing promoting white or white-passing content creators and excluding POC. This pisses me off honestly I had to go out of my way to get poc KZbinrs recommended to me when race doesn't even factor in when I'm looking at a content creator.

That's not what I have an issue with tbh. Ppl can have shit opinions and behaviors at any age. If you were mature and responsible very early in life: good for you and I'm proud of you (I mean it). If someone found wisdom only at old age, even though they should've known better at 30 or whatever: not optimal, but good for them for finding wisdom eventually. What I _do_ have an issue with is ppl not owning, or even not acknowledging past mistakes. It makes me suspect their "personal growth" is fake, just a show, because to me a genuinely wizened-up person would appreciate the journey that brought them to their current state of mind.

When he brought up blm, it reminded me of Kevin Spacey deflecting his allegations with "I've decided to live life as a gay man." It's a weird form of "something" (gaslighting isn't the right term but it's the right energy) where someone avoids criticism or retribution by bringing up and attaching themselves to a social issue. So it becomes if you criticize them, you're criticizing the movement or a marginalized group (in spacey's case). It's worse than performative activism because you're using it as a shield.

I think his initial defense of his racist trash when he was in shane dawson’s “documentary” was more in line with Kevin Spaceyism in that Jeffree used himself being gay and being called a f***ot as an excuse and a shield for him calling people n***ers. This current statement seems more “what aboutism” to me because he isn’t using his own identity as a way to deflect. This time he’s just using murdered Black trans women. He sure has evolved 🙄

Ruben de Groot Especially when you consider what someone commented earlier and Kat agreed with which is that Kat did a video about Jefree a while ago and he copyright striked her because her video wasn’t flattering for him. So he literally tried to get a Black trans woman taken down on KZbin for not fawning over him and then uses Black trans women to deflect from his bullshit in this “apology” video. Like I already had no respect for him but somehow that respect is even lower after that dumpster fire of a video.

Yeah, I joke around and call him things like Methilyn Manson, Crack Skellington, and Dumpster Reject, but besides that, I don't think too much about That Creature. He's done what every other not-sorry-at-all racist has done: put out a fake apology, mention some Black people and make false claims about what they want you to believe they've done. About your point on the white people that talk about "where are all the Black you tubers", and how their engagement begins and end with watching one video. You are 100% right. I'm a white person who was introduced to you and T1J and, for the first few months, thought "where are all the Black you tubers", and put the entire blame on the algorithm. Now that I've been interacting more and commenting, I get tons of new Black creators in my recommended videos. There's an instinct to blame this more abstract unknown, instead of looking at our own behavior and how it might be perpetuating these problems. (Edited to capitalize the B in Black)

I agree with you but I definitely think the algorithm has something to do with it. Like it seems like Black creators who do exactly the same type of content as a white content creator I’m watching will just never show up in my recommended. I have to find a Black creator and only then will other Black creators within that genre start to be recommended to me. But like, why? If I’m watching Lindsay Ellis and ContraPoints I’ll probably like Kat Blaque, but I only found her because one of them mentioned her. Her videos were never in my recommended. I liked CreepShowArt’s drama channel and D’Angelo Wallce, amandabb, and itzkeisha make similar content and often talk about the same things and some of them even have more subscribers than CreepShowArt, but none of them were in my recommended until my friend mentioned amandabb to me. Even Jackie Aina - I’ve watched plenty of beauty bloggers but she was never in my recommended. It’s weird, like does youtube just tag some creators as Black and some as white and if a viewer is watching a white creator then youtube will only recommend other white creators? Even if there’s better content about the same topics made by Black creators?

Emily Kipp Yes definitely, I think that the algorithm absolutely is a part of the problem, I had that same issue following breadtube for years before seeing T1J. I just don't want white ppl to take that easy out of "It's all the algorithms fault", like, if I had been more invested in watching POC creators when I was younger, I could have found them by looking, and the fact that I didn't isn't entirely the algorithm's fault. I think the algorithm works on people's unconscious, keeping them in their echo chamber of viewpoints, not introducing them to other points of view. Also, side complaint about the algorithm, the fact that people who have been watching white creators have to specifically look for creators that aren't white, is a huge problem. It ensures that those creators are constantly viewed by new subs through a lens of race, basically encouraging that attitude of follow them because they're Black first and because you like their content second, that Kat talks about in this video. But also, I think it's good to recognize that the algorithm is the easiest thing to criticize and nearly impossible for us to change, making it a convenient scapegoat for all the blame, and a way to avoid having the conversation about our personal flaws. But yes, definitely agree that the algorithm has an impact, I just don't think we should focus on it as much as we do.

He doesn't seem capable of any true, deep reflection on his actions and he always manipulates his audience in those "apology" videos. He claims he's taking accountability when he's actually not...he's just derailing the conversation and deflecting, blaming his circumstances, mental health, etc. Making excuses, calling his actions in the past the actions of a different person...trying to divorce himself from what he said and did. He never mentions specifics of what he's done and speaks in generalities. In my opinion, he's just targeting his die-hard sycophants with those videos. The people who will believe everything he says without corroboration. Those fans also seem to be incapable of deep reflection and can't take an in-depth look at/analyze what he's done. So they use his non-apology apology videos as justification for continuing to support him and attack anyone who disagrees. It's sad and speaks to a lack of critical thinking skills.

I personally couldn't find black fitness and alt/makeup or goth creators before all the BLM shoutouts. @@broombed7888 are they marginalized by the algorithm or are they marginalized by the way people react when the algorithm serves them black creators? Most algorithms become racist because of the data we serve them. Everytime someone ignores black creators popping up in their feed, they make the algorithm in general a bit more racist. Goth is a good example of that. The only goth creator (person who's feed is focused on being goth, so not Kat) in my youtube feed is black, but I know there is a huge amount of racism within the community. I don't find it difficult to believe that Goth people are not recommended because people will click on the pale skinned dark haired girl instead. His lips look right, he probably said “McCain” or something similar, but if you listen the echo sounds different. It’s indicative of him saying the name again someplace else.

I had a debate with a fellow aspiring makeup influencer (who also sews some beautiful pieces) on twitter about the very topic of people essentially pity/guilt following Black people, and I'm SO glad you brought up that aspect of performative behavior

and that’s even more audacious when you realize that black girls get made fun of for big lips, brown girls get made fun of for thick eyebrows, and asian girls get made fun of for their eye shape, then they grow up only to see those same white girls who teased them using makeup to give themselves bigger lips and eyebrows and do the “fox eye” look. ugh.

So well put! My jaw dropped when he took that abrupt turn to talking about BLM. It was so blatantly NOT about supporting the movement. He used it to deflect and try to shame anyone making content criticizing him. It was just cheap, tacky, and, it itself, a racist act. It also so clearly communicated that he thinks his audience are idiots who wouldn't catch any of that. Thank you for also talking about how to be an actual ally because I found that helpful (though I recognize that that burden falls disproportionately on POC).

I subscribed not because you're black or trans, but because you make thought provoking and informative content on topics often not talked about in mainstream discourse like polyamory. You provide a unique perspective on so many different topics and it's so needed and valuable to this platform. You are a gem in the sea of KZbin shit. Keep up the great work!

Also his listing his bad behaviour as questions doesn't sit right with me. "Did I do this? Did I do that?" Feels like he's downplaying and dancing around the point instead of saying "I fucked up by doing this and I'm sorry"

He does that a lot, Shane did the exact thing. Same as the "that person" (it's you boo!) And the questions. What they both also do a lot is lean on their persona to downplay the seriousness. "I wouldn't say that *in earnest*". It's like a Schroedinger's asshole, if something is serious depends on the backlash they receive.

What you said about the shifts in the algorithm is so real. I genuinely struggled to find youtubers talking about their experiences as black people. However, it really changed when your commenters recommended channels by black women. I subscribed to everyone suggested, began regularly watching, liking, occasionally commenting (though trying not to insert myself into conversations not meant for me)....and my recommendations are shifting. There are HUGE channels that were completely invisible to me!! It's wild how this site works.

“Breonna Taylor’s murderers are still alive” Yeah, people are actively going to protests and getting shot with rubber bullets or have tear gas thrown at them. Not everyone has the same audience as the human Yee dinosaur, OR the money/power. It’s just so disgusting that he brought up the police protecting three killers to deflect him being accused of blackmailing people into never pushing back at him.
