In the words koirani and koirasi the endings -ni/-si are not case endings but possessive suffixes which can be added to words after the case ending e.g. "koirallani".

Yes, I realized that afterwards....it was an on the spot example (I guess more on how Finnish likes to add endings not necessarily cases) but thanks for pointing it out! Very true!

Some of the different endings can be so subtle for the layman to hear and then mix it in with spoken Finnish AND the fact that Finn's speak on 10x speed..!

I'm new to learning Finnish but in Lithuanian it is the same. We have 7 cases and I'm not sure myself what is more difficult: actually learning or explaining them. I wish you good luck and I'm sure you'll do a great job explaining these things ;)

That's good so the topic is familiar to you at least :D
@fzpe8564 жыл бұрын
Jacek Szarzyński It seems to be, but not really. No articles and no gramatical genders. There are more cases in Finnish_ because they love postpositions. So, it is not about the number.
@lunet1st4883 жыл бұрын
Polish is far more different grammar and pronounciation wise.

So, English does still retain one case ending, specifically a genitive (possessive) case ending, usually written ‘s for singular and s’ for plural.

@DoomCro14 жыл бұрын
It seems scary but I'd like to comfort you a bit. :D Officially there are 15 cases, but not all of them are used equally, and they can basically be grouped so the number "drops" quickly. Of course, there are exeptions for every rule but it kind of goes like this: True cases, in the sense that other languages use it (like my native language, Croatian) are only nominative, partitive and genitive - so that's 3 cases. 6 cases are used as the substitute to prepositions in english and determine the location - inessive, elative, illative, adessive, ablative, allative. But in reality, this can also be cut down. The first 3 describe the same thing as the second 3, only difference is that the first group is used for closed locations, and the second is for open spaces (again, with some exceptions). And then you have 6 more cases that are considered rarely used and in practice you will learn by heart some words with their case as if it doesn't have any other options to appear in different case (even though it does). There's a lot more to it than this, but I hope it helps :)

Good question! (Yes you're correct I do neuroscience), that's why I've given up on an uploading schedule and just try to film on days I have less class/less homework to do :) Also, maybe you've noticed but I've been doing more vocab focused ones lately which take less brain power on my part and less research/time to make. Well done broaching the subject of Finnish case endings. I might say there is a difference between possessive suffixes (-ni/-si) and case endings, but then I'm not a native speaker to have an informed opinion. edit: ...ah, see someone said already. So then thank you for tackling them in the first place. Now to #2.

sorry I can't remember who it is but someone said in their video that there is no word stem or the thing we need in the actual dictionary... that's the wrong one. Is this true? If so how would a learner be able to learn the stem or the core or what we need? As I'm running out of vocabulary lists and was just going to use the dictionary to find what I need, like words I use. But this person seemed to be saying I'd need to chop a bit off that (they could be wrong or maybe I'm confused). Sorry I don't know all the official words. Maybe you know what I mean. I would find it really shocking if a dictionary was doing that. Btw I'd love to see a video SOLELY of what you have at 05:15 if you don't have one already. Eg, all the different (or some of the different!) ways to say different words. The same word with it's different endings/cases on. Eg: cat, dog, house, bed. The cat, to the cat, on the cat, your cat, my cat, blah blah. The bed, to the bed, on the bed, your bed, my bed... Just to practice and get used to seeing the words in forms we don't usually see them in on vocab lists so we learn how to recognise the cases as we are familiar with the (stem?) word already. Eg: koira.
@ranoutofeyeballs4 жыл бұрын
I don't want to use a particular word as like I said this person is saying that there are 2 shortened versions of words in finnish and that the dictionary is using the wrong one for learners. If it is totally untrue that explains my extreme confusion haha. Then I suppose I can use all the words (like core, basic) interchangably as they'll all mean the same thing.
@KatChatsFinnish4 жыл бұрын
Hmm I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but the words in the dictionary are the basic forms. So yes, sometimes when you conjugate them the endings will change and some parts of the endings may come off - but I wouldn't say the basic form is useless or wrong xD
