There aren't many songs which have managed to move me to tears, but "Hello Earth" (one of my faves on "Hounds of Love") is one of them, another one being Kate's cover version of Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" (a song about Marylin Monroe) - the compassion/smypathy she manages to convey with her voice in that song is incredible -, which was included on the single of her cover version of Elton John's "Rocket Man" (which is also great).

It's another great song on an album that contains so many of them, thank you (once again) for your reaction to another Kate Bush song. Lindsay Kemp her drance/mime teacher (who had previously taught David Bowie) recounted a couple of stories about Kate in 2014 BBC documentary about her. He said that when Kate turned up she looked professional in the way that she was dressed, however it was clear that she was shy and timid because she took she place at the very back of the class, so he moved her towards the front so he could improve her confidence and bring her out of herself - he succeeded in doing so because he said that when she danced Kate was a "wild thing". After the album was released Lindsey Kemp was sitting at home when a slim package was slipped under his door, it was a copy of the album which of course contained this song dedicated to him and he didn't know that Kate was aiming to be a pop artist, since she had never mentioned it to him. As to why Kate wanted to take dance lessons in the first place, well some years before Kate had seen Lindsay Kemp's one man mime show and she was amazed by how much Lindsay Kemp could communicate by just movement alone, so Kate decided to attempt to combine this strength of movement with her voice.
@generationgapreacts2 жыл бұрын
Its very apparent just from the Wuthering Heights video that she's an incredible dancer and mime! How interesting that Lindsay also taught Bowie. Bowie and Kate both have such a unique sound to their music and also in the way they dance! I'm glad Lindsay was able to build up her confidence.

This is my no.1 Kate Bush's song .I was 12,or 13 ,I believe when I saw her ( this album ) at a record store I frequented in Tokyo & asked the record store's owner to play this album for me & I fell in love with her immediately. I told people there this was the type of music I was looking for !! I found it funny as she did Wuthering heights as I was putting melodies on book's storyline at the time ,that was what I was doing whenever making songs myself !! I wrote my own lyrics,too ,but that was how I started coming up w/ melodies . To this day ,I cry to this song ,when I sing this ,too ! That dancing/ pantomime instructor you were talking about is Lindsay Kemp ! Without him,there would had not been David Bowie ,or Kate Bush really !! I was very lucky enough to see his performances a couple of times when he toured Japan in the late 80's. He was very very unique / artistic . Rip Lindsay Kemp .💜🥁🐉🎤💞

I always wanted to be a vet ( veterinarian) as I love love animals & wanted to heal people's broken hearts with my music,etc. Although ,her songs helped me to be a much better singer as her songs were more involved musically ,ranges ,key changes,unusual notes,unpredictable notes ,techniques, breathing ,on top of that ,very theatrical ,not to mention very high tones ,so on !! You truly are going through Kate's discography in chronological order and I am 100% behind you on doing it👍🔥 For added context, "Moving" (1978) is Kate's tribute to her mime/dance choreography teacher, the late Lindsay Kemp (1938-2018). I know you are only a few songs in Kate's whimsical and sensual world but when you get to her legendary 1985 album "Hounds of Love" (The one with "Running Up That Hill" on it) it contains Kate's magnum opus, a high-concept suite titled "The Ninth Wave," which is essentially the second half of "The Hounds of Love" (1985). Kate likened it to a film, the idea about someone (her) having washed off a boat. The person is adrift at sea, alone, scared, cold, and clinging on to life via a life jacket. Throughout the endeavor, the person is going in and out of consciousness, her mind playing up the terrifying predicament, thoughts of drowning/death, faith, the afterlife, and the hope/relief of being saved. It is composed of seven songs starting with the song you listened to. In order: "And Dream of Sheep" "Under Ice" "Waking the Witch" "Watching You Without Me" "Jig of Life" "Hello Earth" "The Morning Fog" A must-listen experience to react to in its entirety

I have been a fan of Kate's since I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in December of 1978. I was 18 years old and Kate completely mesmerized me. If you want to see her dance routine to "Moving" there are video's on KZbin of her performing this song as her opening number on her Tour of Life in 1979 (it's incredible!!). There is also a video of her dancing to "Moving" at Efteling (in her famous knee high red boots). It's wonderful seeing someone like you discovering the genius of Kate Bush. She is a completely unique one-of-a-kind artist, and has been a pioneer and inspiration for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. She is definitely a deep-dive, Kate has so much music to explore and it is all unique and innovative (sometimes bonkers, sometimes challenging, sometimes rip-your-heart-out achingly beautiful, but always completely brilliant and captivating). If you are really interested in her music, I suggest starting at her debut album and going through her whole catalog, you won't be disappointed. She is considered by many to be the Queen of prog/art rock and she has many masterpieces (from her epic song "Breathing" about nuclear war/fallout from the perspective of an unborn baby in the womb, to her 7-song suite "The Ninth Wave" about a woman shipwrecked at sea and struggling to survive, to her entire 1/2 of a double album (Aerial) called "A Sky Of Honey" about the passing of a 24 hour day, to songs from her latest studio album (50 Words for Snow) including one about a Yeti in the Himalayans ("Wild Man") and another about a romantic encounter with a snowman ("Misty").

Love your reaction and, yes, your reaction is very normal to how a lot of people react to Kate for the first time!! The first song on the first album is sometimes quite revealing as to what to expect from an artist. (Think of the first Beatles song "I saw her standing there" where even then the chord changes and harmonies were not really in sync with how Rock and Roll was being done by just about everyone else in 1962). Here, on this first song she uses off stage noises to punctuate the song, uses her own voice as an additional instrument and gives a vocal that sometimes hovers over the song and then swoops and swirls and spirals into it and through before soars upwards again. You will encounter this a few times. This (and her next album "Lionheart") is Kate at her most youthful and almost naive (eg Oh To Be in Love, or L'Amour looks Something Like You). To me It's a great album.

Kate recorded a number of videos for the opening of the Efteling amusement park in the late 70s (including "Moving"): kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqCYlKt3bKyMja8 One of my personal favourites she also included ("The Kick Inside"): kzbin.info/www/bejne/nouaYniQdpZjjLc The meaning is quite dark but the song is beautiful. I agree, I always have tears in my eyes when listening to Kate :-)

Absolutely agree! That Kate special at the opening event of the new Efteling park (May 12th, 1978) is very good, and my favourite of the 6 songs is the last one "The Kick Inside", followed by the extended version of the great Ian Bairnson guitar solo of "Wuthering Heights". There are two videos, that I usually use, with some minor differences in speed and visual quality: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIPKmoKZob5gfpY (2010 full version, also available in parts from 2008) kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3SoYZ2wg5x4j6M (2020 full version) 0:00 Moving 3:09 Wuthering Heights 6:37 Them Heavy People 9:40 The Man With The Child In His Eyes 12:18 Strange Phenomena 15:09 The Kick Inside

This is the first song of her debut album and let's be honest, to anyone wanting to check her out see if it's worth investing in her discography, that first song is all they need and it's impossible not to be hooked by the end of it.

No I don't usually cry when I listen to her. I am captivated, hypnotized, and entranced. Having said that watching you brought to tears brings me to tears. So..... Cut out you are making me cry 😭😢😭😢😂😂 For something a little more ominous in it's theme give Breathing a try. It will definitely haunt you. To hear Kate in her slightly manic somewhat psychotic rocker mode, give Babooshka a try. When Kate expresses anger, her eyes get big and frightening, but still stunning and beautiful.

Big respect for reacting to this song as it's not reacted too much, if at all. I am interested to hear you react the Lionheart album, especially the title track 'Oh England My Lionheart' and 'In Search Of Peter Pan'. Keep up the great work and enjoy your Kate Bush journey

While I get why you look up the lyrics beforehand, I wonder what it would be like to come to a song completely cold. Maybe worth trying once? Anyway, this song is the first song on her debut album, and what an opening statement it is! Her chord progressions are amazingly sophisticated aren't they? Love the bassline on this one too.

Considering how very young Kate Bush was, when she wrote such lyrics and conceived this music, has there ever been anybody as precocious as this woman was, in her early teen years? It is disturbing, what an old soul she already was.

I know this album and The next one called “Lionheart” by heart. Heard these songs hundreds, maybe thousands of times. Every single song is a poem wrapped in a magical sound. Kate is a one of a kind artist. I would give you a suggestion but there are just too many great songs to pick from . Love your comments ❤

As an alternative to reacting to her non-single songs with third party lyric videos there are some very good live performances from the only tour she ever did in 1979 when she was 20. For example, there is a very good performance of ‘Symphony in Blue’ on this 2-song video that has benefitted from some 4K remastering. Start at 5.00 for a nice short transition into the song - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6Ckp2qHe9eNbZI

Yes that's an excellent remastered video, it would be really nice if a complete remastered "Tour Of Life" concert performance could be put together that together with "Before The Dawn" footage as so many missed out on seeing Kate perform live. Another reason to avoid unofficial videos of songs is that some of have been remixed and effects added or they stop before the end of the song, I assume to avoid copyright issues, I've certainly encountered that videos that have had lyrics added to them..
@generationgapreacts2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that! I picked the lyric version because sometimes I have a hard time understanding words in song form. But I didn't think about the possibility of the song being changed for copyright.

There was a rumour going around that Kate Bush dabbled in the dark arts, that's not unusual as quite a lot of artists where heavily into Aleister Crowley weren't they? But in Kate Bush's case I can definitely see that. I always thought she had a witch like appearance about her in her early video's, and that voice. Her songs are definitely mesmerising & haunting maybe that's her secret. Didn't write a song 'Waking the witch' another clue. Her videos are are dark themed too, most of them especially the early one's and the way they are filmed. Burn the witch - only joking! Where would the music world be without Kate Bush? Wow! - no pun intended 😀

Just an advance heads up on a Kate Bush non-album single called "December Will Be Magic Again" which was released in 1980 after "Army Dreamers" a single from Kate's 3rd album "Never For Ever", it is Kate's only official Christmas themed song that released on the run up to the Christmas season.. Now there isn't an official video, but here's a clip from Kate's 1979 (unusual) Christmas Special during which it was first performed. The special was broadcast on the BBC. kzbin.info/www/bejne/povMkpeYaMejhas If you get a chance (when it fits into your chronological ordering) to watch that 1979 Christmas special I guarantee that it will be interesting. 😀
