There is a magazine article where he tells the story of how he became part of this video and I find it very interesting. “Barry Richardson, who was the hairdresser on Nic Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, asked me if I’d do a music video with Kate Bush. I told him no and we went on to other conversations,” Sutherland said. Learning that he was staying at the Savoy Hotel in London, Kate Bush decided to intervene. “I opened it. There was no one there,” he recalled. “I heard a voice saying hello and I looked down. Standing down there was a very small Kate Bush. Barry had told her where I lived. What can you do?” Kate Bush explained the song’s lyrics and narrative in detail, emphasising the connection to Wilhelm Reich - whose work Donald Sutherland was familiar with while filming Bernardo Bertolucci’s Novecento. “Everything about Reich echoed through me,” he explained. “He was there then and now he was here. Sitting across from me in the person of the very eloquent Kate Bush. Synchronicity. Perfect. She talked some more. I said okay and we made ‘Cloudbusting.’” “She’s wonderful, Kate Bush. Wonderful. I love that I did it,” Sutherland continued. “I remember being in the car and the hill and them taking me, taking Reich, away and looking back through the back window of the car and seeing her, seeing Reich’s son Peter, standing there. And I remember the first morning on set seeing her coming out of her trailer smoking a joint and I cautioned her, saying she shouldn’t smoke that, it’d affect her work, and she looked at me for a second and said she hadn’t been straight for nine years and I loved her.”

Great story! I almost laughed out loud about "I looked down" :D. As I had said in my comment, he used to come into a market I worked at, and he was TALL. I can't imagine meeting Kate in her heyday, I mean what a gorgeous woman. She knew what she needed for her music, and she went and got it :).

Donald Sutherland's career is unbelievable the number of movies he made, and the number of shows he was on. Some of the real big movies of the 20th century including "The Great Train Robbery", "The Eagle has Landed". "Ordinary People", M.A.S.H. , Casanova, among others. The subtlety he shows in this brilliant MV by Kate Bush is amazing, showing it all with no words, just a smile, or a frown, or a long look, a tensed shoulder, a regal demeanor. This song has so much deep feeling, and philosophical grounding. That whole Hounds of Love album is a masterpiece.

I was very sad to wake up this morning to hear of Donald Sutherland's death. His career took hold just as I was getting into movies around the late sixties, so he seems to have been there my entire life. He appeared in landmark movies such as 'M.A.S.H'. 'Klute', 'The Eagle Has Landed', 'Kelly's Heroes' and the astonishing 'Don't Look Now'. Another hero has passed on. Well done JK. On seeing the news I immediately thought that Kate's 'Cloudbusting' video would be an appropriate way for NicknLex to honour Donald's career and legacy. According to 'Under The Ivy', Graeme Thomson's definitive biography of Kate Bush, Donald initially rejected EMI's approach to appear in the video but changed his mind when he met Kate. He was shooting a movie called 'Revolution' with Al Pacino and not really enjoying it, so he thought a three day break to make a 'pop video' would be fun. It turned out to be a very busy three days and the shot of him being driven away in the car was him actually leaving the set. Kate and the whole crew thought he was brilliant though, and he added gravitas and experience to the whole shoot with Kate learning so much from him. Thanks JK and Nick for a great video remembering a great actor; and what a bonus for it to feature the UK's greatest female rock musician.

She's probably made to look even smaller like a boy by having him stand on something higher. The music video, directed by Julian Doyle which was conceived by Terry Gilliam and Kate Bush as a short film. Beautifully shot simple sentimental story that always moves me emotionally as the driving marching groove gradually builds with choir voices to a positive climax

What a great way to honor this great actor in the context of NicknLex' music reactions. Kate Bush is my favorite artist, and Donald does such a great job in this role. Such a great song too, and the video was so cinematic. Great reaction and exploration, Nick, thans so much for doing this.

So sad to hear about Donald Sutherland's passing. I remember reading at the time that when Kate's team first approached Donald, they were worried that he might not have even heard of Kate Bush, but apparently he was already a big fan of her music! I have a special affection for this video, filmed at White Horse Hill, Uffington, which is just a few miles down the road from where I live.

Thank you for a fitting tribute to Donald Sutherland. He will be missed as an outstanding actor. R.I.P. Kate's lyrics are quite fitting to the occasion. I am always struck by the quality of her productions. This song/video is a very good example. The song was specially remixed to the video's length. The original song was the second single after Running Up That Hill, taken from her 5th studioalbum Hounds Of Love in 1985. It was her most successful album. Mostly because of the lead single and the whole B-side of the album, a 7-piece suite, "The Ninth Wave". You and Lex have beautifully reacted to the whole piece. Thank you for that as well! In 2014 Kate performed live after 35 years in London, where she had her residency for 3 weeks. Among many other pieces, she performed the complete Ninth Wave. Cloudbusting was the final encore. The first encore was Among Angels. May I suggest you reacting to that performance?

Hi Nick, thankyou for such a lovely tribute for Donald, and an excellent music choice video. I bought the vhs of Kate Bush music videos in the 80's and "Cloudbusting" is on it. I first saw this actually in the cinema in between movies [ You always got 2 movies in the 80's and before ] It was a total surprise when it came on, as the only epic music video around was Michael Jacksons Thriller and this was extra special seeing Donald Sutherland with Kate Bush. His appearance was so unexpected, as he was already a huge Hollywood star. I have a dvd box set of a tv series called "Man in a Suitcase" Starring Richard Bradford. Fantastic series from the 1960's where Bradford plays a gun for hire / private detective, who is wanted by MI5, [ he use to work for ] so has to keep moving from place to place living out of a suitcase. There is an episode called "Day of Execution" featuring a very very young Donald Sutherland and it is brilliant. It's so sad to hear the news we lost an actor of such a high calibre as Donald. He as so many great movies some mentioned below in comments but there is one classic people never seem to remember "Steelyard Blues" ... The scene with Donald working as a zoo keeper in a lions cage is hysterical, as he enters the cage of a lion just lying in the corner, to clean up the droppings, and gets a gathering of the public watching in amazement he is in there with a lion.....So ....he puts on a little show scooping up. Brilliaint and a great movie. RIP Donald !! Jim x

In the film version of Friedrich Dürrenmatts "Der Richter und sein Henker" ("The judge and his hangman") Mr. Sutherland only appears in the first few minutes as a corpse slowly bobbing back and forth on the front-passengers seat while the car driver desperately tries to transport him as unconspicious as possible - hilarious! "Don't Look Now" and "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" are the two movies that immediately come to my mind - I have them both on DVD. I just read that Sutherland was anti war, but supported Obama - well, not making sense, but many got that one wrong (not me!). "Cloudbusting" is a great song, one of my favourites from Kate Bush (even though my absolute favourite still is her complete first album). The idea of "cloudbusting" sounds disturbing, though, in times of weather manipulations.
@grahamhowes69044 ай бұрын
Very apposite as Donald Sutherland had an affair with Jane Fonda and was such a prominent anti war activist he was on the CIA watchlist. He was a real caring political activist as well as a very fine actor. A metaphor for making it rain - in other words it’s about liberation and how dangerous a repressive regime finds that. In terms of his acting I would cite DON’T LOOK NOW as one of his best performances. Made around 1974 it still stands the test of time

Ummm... how does ANYone know Donald Sutherland is 6'4? lol Apparently Donald had heard Kate's music and liked her artistry. He was in the UK on holiday but didn't have a worker's permit so agreed to do it for free. Kate in this clip was supposed to be the young son of an HG Wells/Jules Verne/Doctor Who kind of father-inventor.

Donald Sutherland used to come into a Wild Oats Market that I worked at in Santa Monica. I never got to say hello to him (unlike "Rutger Hauer" and co-star "Joe Turkel" of Blade Runner, who both told me that they didn't know the other shopped there :p) but he seemed very friendly. He was also super tall! My fave movies were "The Eagle Has Landed", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", "Ordinary People", and one of my fave _comfort movies_ "Kelly's Heroes" (a WWII "Comedy"), basically playing a 1940's "Hippy" or _Beatnik_ who commanded 3 Sherman Tanks and a squad of hippy misfits in the Army named Sgt. "Odd Ball" 🙃. A very memorable hilarious character. I've must have seen the movie hundreds of times now. The _look_ that Clint Eastwood has when first seeing the bunch was much like when he'd set eyes on the 1st gunfighter he'd knock-off 🤨. I had forgotten about the Kate Bush video, she and her publicist seemed to know lots of people. Here is one for everyone! A VERY unusual "voice appearance" of Mr. Sutherland: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIvOdJSgdsSansUsi=oVMxJgZH12Q5bZaY&t=57 🙂 - Rest in Peace Donald. _"Don't hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning. Its strange that song of kate bush put her on the top of the music charts and in doing so made her known to so many people who were unaware of her or her music and donald sutherland, who was a great actor also ,took so many parts over the years and this was only very recently , R.I.P. big man the world has lost a great talent and is in my mind made smaller by his passing, but on a brighter note it has thrust Kate Bush back into prominence to a new set of younger people and I love to watch their reactions to her voice , now as a footnote I fell in love with kate bush the minute I saw her on the the tellie and I never stopped loving her to this day , I myself am just turned 80 years old I have the same disease as Billy Connely Parkinsons and I keep my old stack of long playing records nearby , but I do not even have to look through them to find them because she is always turning up on my tablet and having been married twice and a great- grandfather a few times over , I still think back to those days , where life was less complicated and and heaven forbid we only had two sexes ,a man and a woman , yes folks I did say just two and we are in the process of electing a new leader ,who will not say ,because he is frightend to upset these so called WOKE Idiots , who should be put in some place secure untill they see the error of there ways and anyone who are upset by my last remarks ,well a certain actor said frankly my dear I do not give a damn , but I am getting away from what I was wanting to tell you ,in my own way , we have lost one of the best actors i have ever seen and my sympathy goes out too his friends and family as always I would like to end this as I do by saying respect and peace to you all no matter what your religion or creed , bryan xxxxxx.
