Kate Bush explained the song in an 1985 interview like this: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."
@ZeeGee882 жыл бұрын
I feel like this could be expanded as a challenge to the traditional relationship of men as the breadwinners and women as the homemakers and the complications that arise with the unevenness of power in that dynamic. Regardless of whether that's applicable or not, I love this song and the meaning behind it. Thank you for sharing.

Consider the significance of a hill. The top of a hill had literally been important to people throughout pre-history and history, While seemingly symbolic - reaching the top - you know they used to ritually worship or even crown chieftains and kings up on top of hills, i.e. Cnoc na Teamhrach, Motte-and-bailey, etc ... a hill is more than an inspiring view. ... from a hill your sight is extended further outwards in all directions of your surrounding - it's clarity. Anyway, reminds me of "Climbing up on Solsbury Hill" ... Peter Gabriel understood.

It is a shame that Kate is not well known in America. But in the U.K, throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan, Kate is an icon. She is a true original, there's just no one like her - a musical genius. By the time Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour discovered her in 1973 at the age of 15, she had already written over 250 songs. A brilliant and innovative composer, lyricist, singer (with a 4-octave voice), pianist, dancer, mime, choreographer, record producer, video producer & director - she even helped develop the first cordless headset microphone that she used on tour. Hugely influential and highly respected by musicians worldwide, Kate was one of the first female musicians to take total production and artistic control over her work. She’s been a real pioneer for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. First woman to have a #1 self-written song in the UK charts. First woman to have an album debut at #1. First woman to have a Top 10 album in each of the last four decades. She has had 25 Top 40 singles, 10 albums on the Top 10 Albums Charts, nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry awards and 3 Grammy awards, an Ivor Novella Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for her honored services to music. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. In 2014 she returned to the stage and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed (named as "the #1 live music event of the year" by many music publications) and she became the first woman to have 8 albums in the top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and The Beatles).

She’s known, just not that well received. She is part of a avant-garde progressive rock/pop music that is very niche. This song was pretty popular at the time.
@mvellis38632 жыл бұрын
@@strawman6085 I disagree that the "niche" you mentioned is not well received as Kate is up there with the greats of that style such as Peter Gabriel and David Bowie. And she is loved, respected, and well received the world-over. But in the U.S. she is not that well know by the general population. She did a few promotional visits in the 80's (and appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1978, when I first saw her) but she never toured here and was not properly promoted in the States by her label EMI. She was asked by Fleetwood Mac to open for their 1979 American tour but she declined as she was exhausted from her own European tour. She has an extremely low profile, is very private, and prefers to quietly make records in her home studio rather than be in the spotlight. She does have a fiercely loyal fan base in the U.S. though, and his highly respected by serious music lovers, musicians, and the music industry/ Her records are hard to find in the vinyl world of record stores and shows because they sell out quickly.

@leslieturner82762 жыл бұрын
FYI for anyone confused with the reference to "The Ninth Wave" it's the 2nd half of "Hounds Of Love" starting with the song "And Dream Of Sheep", ia concept piece, a suite of linked songs. The quickest way to understand the concept is to watch Kate's music video of her singing live "And Dream Of Sheep" which Kate created for her 2014 concert residency performances, you will then have an idea of what the situation is, then you can listen to the entire "The Ninth Wave" as it features on the album. Alternatively you can just go directly to the album and watch the music video afterwards the choice is yours.

As a long time fan (I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in December of 1978 and was mesmerized), I have watched, listened to, or read nearly every interview, documentary, and article done on her. She is a fearless performer, but off the stage she is a shy, intelligent, down-to-earth, normal person (who loves to do the housework and gardening), shuns the spotlight, and is still amazed at all the accolades she receives. It is a universal consensus from people who have met her and talked to her that she is an incredibly humble, gracious, sweet, kind, witty, generous, caring, and all around wonderful human being. Great reaction! 🔥 For Brad, a song that you can hone in on Kate's voice with the instrumentals being more complimentary rather than a distraction, I suggest "This Woman's Work" (1989); preferably the music video. This song depicts the unpredictable nature of childbirth through the eyes of the man. This song was famously covered by R & B singer Maxwell (also a good song albeit in a different interpretation). Kate Bush is definitely in a league of her own who inspired many artists who came after her (Tori Amos, Bjork, Lorde to name a few). Kate is every bit of a theatrical/visual performer/storyteller as she is a musical genius/writer/artist and her extensive/legendary discography proves it. Definitely an artist to react to in future installments

The incomparable Kate Bush. This song is about two people in love swapping places so they could experience the other person's point of view emotionally and physically. As in so many Kate Bush songs, there could also be hidden sexual references. I think she uses metaphors like running up buildings or running up hills to describe physical erections. In the climax to the album Aerial, after a day of wandering in the English countryside and swimming naked in the moonlit sea, the lovers return to their house and bed. where they go 'up on the roof' and watch the 'light climbing up the aerial'. In Running Up That Hill, she says 'See how deep the bullet lies', this could refer to emotional hurt done to the other person but it could also describe the sexual act; this would explain why she says 'It doesn't hurt me'. Hounds of Love is often considered her greatest album, but my personal favourite is Aerial; it's a masterpiece.

Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and of course David Gilmour. She knows when a particular song needs a great guitar sound. Terrific producer.

Listening to artists as diverse as Big Boi from Outkast, Tricky and Johnny Rotten absolutely gush about her is a guilty pleasure of mine. There's a great short form documentary on her here in KZbin that's worth watching.

Kate Bush and Bjork are my favorite two female artists - no question. Elizabeth Fraser and FKA Twigs a close second. Bush is a genius.

LOVED this back in the day. Had the 12" which IIRC wasn't much longer just benefited from bigger grooves. Really pleased you're getting into Kate Bush. Still love the early stuff. The Kick Inside is an astonishing album. Not a single dud. 𝅘𝅥𝅮 She's still a-waiting in her big brass bed ... 𝅗𝅥

For me, this song is forever entangled with the book "Noughts and Crosses" as I read that as a child holidaying in France as my dad would play all his favourite songs, including Kate Bush and this song just resonated with me and the book. It's based in an alternate reality where historically white people were subjugated by black populations into slavery and it is a Romeo and Juliet between a white guy and a black lady

Finally! This woman is a flat out genius and her catalogue is diverse and extensive. Was discovered by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd.and has influenced so many artists. Just brilliant. The video is brilliant too.

Hard to go wrong with Kate Bush, but a good first choice. I knew she would get a smile out of Brad. Her voice is unique and incredible. This Woman's Work, The Man With the Child in his Eyes, Wuthering Heights, anything from Hounds of Love, Rubberband Girl, The Red Shoes, Take your pick.

My FAVORITE Kate Bush song ever! Thank you! FWIW, I heard that the inspiration for the song was a story of a British couple in World War I where the husband went off to France to fight, and the wife began working as a nurse, tending to the wounded being brought back from France. Then she found her husband among the wounded....That's where the "See how deep the bullet lies" line comes from, as well as the "exchange the experience": each of them sees the fear in the other's eyes, and would do anything to take it away, including swapping places so the other could see it wasn't that bad. FABULOUS song, beautifully executed.

Since most people viewing this now are relating this to "Stranger Things", I just want to add that this song was perfect for *that* scene. It may have more impact if you connect the two. Very powerful and moving in the scenario.

@@xaoc6084 I always got looked at kind of weird for enjoying her music when I was in school, especially "Lionheart", "Hounds of Love" and "The Sensual World" which are still to this day three of my all time favorite albums as well. After my grandmother passed, I had a very dark period in my life and the only thing that really kept my heart lifted was the "Hounds of Love" album. I begged for "Running Up That Hill" to be played at her funeral because when I was like 3 or 4, she'd often sing me to sleep with that song.

Kate Bush was/is a global success, although in America she failed to break. She is considered very highly on the music scene and is the first woman to have eight albums in the Official Albums Chart at the same time. If you're new to her music it can be a slow burn experience. IMO she is one of the greatest artists that we have today. This Womans Work also covered by Maxwell is a great place to start.

I love the way you visualize the music. It makes me laugh but then it makes perfect sense. I get the chlorine statement. The music is very atmospheric with a deep echoing vibe. It’s like being underwater but also beautiful like seeing the light shining on the ripples. This is one of my favorite songs ever.
