Kate Winslet Talks Love and Loathing in ‘Mare of Easttown’ (Part 1)

In Part One of IndieWire's interview with the Emmy contender, Winslet talks about how Mare Sheehan always played for keeps.

Much (much, much) has been made about Winslet’s messy hair edict on the set of “Mare of Easttown” and her ongoing war against sanitizing the image of her character - police officer Mare Sheehan - or herself, to a photo-shopped, picture-perfect facade. And while so many of those articles focus on the lack of vanity and commitment to being “real” that Winslet is working to protect, there seems to be a subtext to the Oscar-winning actress’ actions. In some ways, it feels like through “Mare,” Winslet is making a statement: “See me. See me as I am. I’m okay with it and you should be too.”
In a lot of ways it’s actually the opposite of what the titular character wants from the world. Still reeling from the suicide of her son several years before, Mare has cryogenically frozen her grief, to better process at a later date. But that refusal to process her emotions keeps her family and friends at arm’s length, unable to to aid their bereavement process and committed to not burdening anyone with her own.
The audience quickly learns that Mare is a fairly competent cop, a keystone of the community, even as she sleepwalks through her life in a Rolling Rock-induced haze. When a murder and kidnapping are suddenly dropped on the town’s doorstep, it’s Mare who takes the lead, and while her investigation shows sparks of brilliance, it’s clear that her detective work remains a shadow of what it once was.
“Mare is at the epicenter of that world and absorbs everyone else’s problems whilst not dealing with her own,” Winslet said to IndieWire in the first of two recent interviews. “And I don’t know, there was something about her that almost broke my heart because she’s so overloaded with life and and barely functioning but appearing to function incredibly well. And to be able to be that strong and cover up your grief and personal anguish to the extent that she is able to, I found really heartbreaking.”
“I knew that it was going to be a very immersive, challenging experience playing her and it did really take over. She almost became like an alter ego for me,” Winslet said. “Like I miss playing her. That’s how much I loved her.”
Likely part of what the actress developed such affection for was the character’s dedication to not not being an asshole, spending much of the series equal parts exasperated and irritated, a wounded dog just as likely to lick your hand as it is to rip that hand off wholesale.
“I think they [Mare’s family] both love and loathe Mare at any given moment,” she said. “It’s a knife edge with Mare, you just never know. You never know what you’re going to get on any different day, literally, depending on what side of the bed she slept that night. She’s a very volatile, tricky person.”
“But at the same time, I think they all know how much she loves them. And they know how to sort of love her and handle her in equal measure. And that’s the dance. That’s a fine art. And they all just about do it. But I think they are all unified in their fear that if they push Mare too much to talk about her grief, she’ll just fall apart. And they don’t want that to happen to her. I think they’re scared of putting her through that because she’s already been through so much.”
One of the things Mare had been through was taking over guardianship of her grandson Drew after his father’s death. It was the first time the 45-year-old actress played a grandmother, a role she ended up relishing, in no small part thanks to her tiny co-star.
“I mean, it was it was completely lovely,” Winslet said. “Drew becomes the apple of all of their eyes. I was with all those children that they auditioned for that role. And [Izzy King] was the last little boy that came in, and it was absolutely crystal clear that he was our kid. He was just so sweet and kind of wide-eyed and fascinated and engaging. And he really listened. He was absolutely fantastic and he just became part of our world. He was absolutely brilliant.”
Of course, talking about King would be remiss without asking after his spectacular entrance into a scene in Episode 5, during which he hops into the room doubled over and backwards, letting his rump take the lead before quickly being hustled to bed by great gran Helen (Jean Smart).
“That’s his little thing. That’s something that he does. It’s called the bullet,” she explained. “So we put it in the show. We’re like ‘Hey Iz, can do you the bullet?’ and he’d be like, ‘Aw, not again.’ And then he’d do it.”

Kate Winslet, to me, is the younger version of Meryl Streep. What I mean by that is that each are phenomenal actresses and truly are amazing in everything they do. I believe Kate will have a similar legacy that Meryl does. Love her so much.

Поздравляю вас с таким интересным момент, который вот я мечтала об этом в фильме, вот столько лет смотрела его, боже мой, мне не хватило смелости сделать такое дело, ну я уже давно это делаю, что это не у нас. Что с другими начина, а вот реально это настоящий история, все этой жизни, если бы не было бы такого трагедия, произошла трагедия бы, она не произошла бы спокойно. Отстранился дальше, что эти люди доехали до своего штатов, которые хотели высадка, у него была во многих местах и ничего этого бы не произошло, но они не могли увидеть, не могли увидеть этотг, потому что он бы очень близко уже. К нему, если бы они не сильно на скорости летели, как они с этим кораблём происходило, они бы не врезались в этот айсберг, но они именно специально решили проверить свой корабль, неужели он правда непотопляемый, ну вот они ошиблись любой, кто врезается в айсберг, все погибают. Это настоящий айсберг уже давно есть, он был как островок, может быть, как гора снаружи быть, они могли не понять то, что он был маленьким, всё может быть, они подумают что-то. Отплыли холод, почувствовали, поняли, что айсберг не так холодно было, и вот когда это всё произошло за эти куски льда все полетели в Палу, и люди обрадовались, что появились, что якобышки появились, можно было поиграться. И дети даже игрались но это оказалось именно тем самым тем самым моментом что они после этого далеко от плыть не могли и сильно отплылыли чуть чуть и уже просто наполнялось все водой особенно кочегар наполняой в первую очередь там они люди этого. Что это произойдёт, даже не знала об этом. Читала семья даже об этом корабле, они слышали о нём, появился такой корабль на "титаник", и они решили всё-таки попробовать уплыть в Австралию, как я поняла и семья её семья и всё-таки они сбы-это их. Эта мечта у меня сбылась мечта также Джека и его друг Фабио мечта сбылась, да из Мексики Фабио, ну вот мечта сбылась тоже, они тоже выиграли в карты, у них и они выиграли. У них там драка была по поводу всё-таки выиграли и попасть на про. Убирать что-то ли, да момент куда-то поселились 1 женщина, очень хорошо знала же из-за этого всё с ним, с ним общались постоянно о том, как люди просто были в восторге просто. Уютно, аккуратно и тёплые, удобные в постели там, там что, только не было тумбочки, столы там новенькое абсолютно по все заново, новый, абсолютно новые каюты, даже запах краски её чувствовали, что ещё только совершенно новый. Что ещё только-только-только начал идти обрадовались, что это произошло так на этом корабле, что мечта сбылась, потому что они же, прежде чем они разбили бутылку шампанского него, потому что там дыра будет не в том месте, нет ничего не произошло об. Всё-таки удалось попасть на него. 58 год ещё только начинались вот эти строительство кораблей, а это единственный огромный появился, они прям в шоке, там было всё видно плыли, когда даже некоторые видели дельфинов, которые проплывали мимо, это классно вообще красота была видно тихий. Проплывали в этот моментов полнота люди прям смотрели любовались выходили на пались рыбками которые плыли за кораблём это был классно все классно фильм

Я ещё сильнее тронута, что я смотрела это кино очень долго, потому что хорошее кино и таким способом решила, но как. Ну как оставить без внимания таких людей, я не довольна, я смотрела. Но если бы я не смотрела эпизод, не знала, можно было запомнить отлы, как они там любовались, чем любовались, что не было на палубе, особенно там, что только не было там. Просто какой-то вот просто комфортный, комфортный дом, то можно любоваться и любоваться этим кораблём реально классно каюту показывали, кто как заселя, как интересно. Как удобно, как-то? Это что, настоящий, настоящий, настоящий, а все, все, что хочешь, то и делай. Для всего и для игры в казино, казино там было, чего там только не было, но это что это прям не фильм, это какой-то чудо из чудес, я пару таких фильмов видела похожих на это, что вот это вообще такое вот других. Чтоб выигрывал на Мери корабле, был. Не было всё, было бы совсем по-другому, думаю, сейчас уже со "титаник" такой же план, и он сейчас пропс. Видят люди, видят этот айсберг мимо него пропл нормально, почему он решил протаранить, это я не знаю, для чего они решили убить, убить и всё это желание было, чтобы не потопляемый, давай его и попробуем. Ну, не потопляем, если в айсберг врезается, любой может утопиться от этого айсберга, тем более там только островок айсберга был, а внутри он весь гора айсберга, конечно, как они это не почувствовали. Корабли проплывали уже, что не было такого, чтоб кора, что они не Айс. Добавок ещё не на месте, я бы подумала так. Испытание испытания прошёл как с людьми, может быть испытание на холод, как это будет тепло ли будет, когда в холодное время года будет осенью, будет комфор проверка, то была они проверяли для того, чтобы врезаться во что-то. Бутылку шампанского разбили ещё испугались дыра после этого ничего не произошло то и тут это было

Mare is very proficiency police to swim and swirl guilts, as it must be, she is a police woman of course by that trace she finds the criminals, but drama in that case not match in feeling guilt, maybe finding grief by the death of her son, but weakness finally for the own reason of profession...being a mother and bearing all, if she doesn't find that weakness is in the whole of the psicopatas where she finds herself and that is a very hard and fully problem for the corps of the police to be solved. ¿How did him died? I have to see this serie .
