It's not a critic opinion, it's the quality of art, it's ability to last as well. Bizet's Carmen was booed on the opening night and he died in poverty. Mozart died in poverty as well. It doesn't mean they weren't great composers. They created great art - something lasting. This is what you don't seem to get. Art is created for the sake of art itself, an artist wants to create something great, sure he has to make a living but his primary purpose isn't to cater to tastes this moment.

The words are unimportant as 99% of those that hear it don't understand them anyway. Katherine Jenkins gave a magnificent performance and did it justice. You are simply being an elitist snob.

You saw maybe one ad for a Happy Hour and you immediately jumped to conclusion that it's a common occurrence. Any genre needs advertising by the way, Broadway as well, opera hasn't been doing any for a long time, so now they realized that hey, it may be a good idea. Oh, and for a 3800 seat theater with as many performances, 80-90% ticket sales aren't that bad, Broadway gets a lot less. There are also Met HD broadcasts to the movie theaters, and those are generally sold out.

You're welcome! Ms Yende is bound to be a huge star; she's very intelligent, and she's turned down all of the offers she received after her debut because she is spending the rest of the year studying. It's actually quite fascinating, the New York Times did an article on her a week ago and apparently the African voice translates very well into opera, because the concept of projection and acoustic resonance is very present in their own music, hence the very natural, distinctive timbre of her voice

But you're mistaken. I'm not "living in the past" by being a fan of opera. Opera has been developing steadily for the past 500 years. Some of the biggest innovations to the genre have come in the past century, including recent decades. There are hundreds of new operas written every year by composers from all over the planet. It's not an obsolete, novelty of an art form - it's just executed in a much different way than other types of musical entertainment.

Katherine Jenkins is the best opera singert trained Jo Mc Eldery who won the X factor, and then he won Pop Star to opera star as well. Roland Villazon has lessons with her because she leaned vocal teaching at the Royal Academy in London ao she is qualified to direct operas and tech opera singers. People would say Bob Dylan is a great singer, because he was a fabulous communicator who understood the limits of his instruments and used them effectively. But his success cannot be limited to his singing alone; arguably his lyrics were the biggest selling point of his art, not necessarily his vocal talent. But this is also in the context of rock, and to a greater extent, folk music, neither of which KJ is a part of. She bills herself as a classical singer, so she is judged as such

Netrebko and other opera singers make most money from live performances in opera not from CD sales though a concert tour with a CD release is more lucrative. Oh, and she is also an official "ambassador" of Chopard since 2006. But really, making money and being popular isn't a sign of greatness or artistry.
@serrateresa11 жыл бұрын
Broadway hasn't replaced opera, it existed alongside it. Also, in case you don't know the Metropolitan Opera fills up its seats much better than Broadway. As to proper acoustics, the singers still have to be heard over the orchestra, don't you think acoustics helps the orchestra too? Oh, and I am a research scientist not a singer,, so why would I be jealous of a singer? I love my job. Oh, and logic please. Why being jealous of Kj yet not be jealous of Netrebko for example?
@SeamonkeyRocks11 жыл бұрын
I think Katherine would be a great pick for the part of Prince Vlodimir Orlov in the ENO production of Turandot, don't let trouser roles put you off, she is a well fit bird, but it would suit her voice and her high academic standards and charicterisation.

Netrebko has many things that I admire. The instrument itself really is quite stunning, and she is by no means a mediocre musician. There are just some things I can't get past, mainly the inventive diction, throaty lower middle (which sort of mangles the language), and inelegant coloratura. The recent Elisir didn't compliment her too well, but I must say her Decker Traviata is pretty fab. I'm looking forward to her Tatiana (and rumored Iolanta) next season, so I guess i'm a *sort of* fan ;)

LOL - Broadway has its own theaters singers and fans, opera has its own theaters, singers and fans, though there is a huge overlap between fans. Opera doesn't need to be defended, it existed before you were born and will exist long after you are gone. Given how KJ keeps talking about her dreams of singing in opera (google, plenty of her interviews there), she does care. As to Netrebko, my point was that her looks didn't hurt her opera career, yet you claim that KJ's looks hurt her. Logic?

Funny how the looks never hurt Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Juan-Diego Florez,Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros, Danielle DeNiese, Renee Fleming and zillion other good-looking opera singers. For some reason people just singled out poor KJ for her looks, but didn't mind good looks when it came to others. Oh, and have you ever seen how Anna Moffo looked like? But hey, don't let me confuse you with facts.

I think.. she has a beautiful voice, and she is pretty... she has some technical problems, i think. I dont like her high notes (not by this aria) , her vibrato is too much esp by high notes. It is the first aria from her what I like. But tell the truth is not a good opera singer's level. Okay, she is a popera singer, BUT she uses classical techincs, so it is not en excuse.Andrea Bocelli is also a popera singer. But i do think she can be really good. I love her voice
@serrateresa11 жыл бұрын
Oh another thing. As a mensa member (if you are) you should know that the word "pop" comes from "popular", so in pop music popularity is super-important. Then you proceed that KJ is somehow better than pop singers yet your arguments are all about popularity. Classical music has never been judged on popularity, but I guess the difference between popularity is artistry is beyond you. Incidentally, Coca Cola is popular too, does it mean it's great or good for you or healthy?

Actually, if you think that these ladies are not very well off financially you are sadly mistaken, I am not even sure KJ has a bigger net worth than say Netrebko (money seems to be the only measure of success in your book). And if you think that KJ doesn't want to get into an opera company, you clearly haven't read her interviews when she said how it was her dream to sing Carmen and Cherubino at La Scala. She simply was never good enough for opera, this is why it wasn't her major at RA.

But really, you are in love with KJ, we got it, no need to put down a genre you don't know absolutely anything about to praise your idol.

Ahhhh, see, you've used a bad example. Salome is, compositionally, one of the most innovative for it's use of chromaticism. The music speaks entirely for itself. I've been to sold-out performances where everyone is wearing tuxedos and standing still(a concertized, not staged performance). The fact that some people only want nudity has nothing to do with the quality of the music. Some people just want to see KJ nude, but I won't use that as a reason why her music is subpar.
@KBI01112 жыл бұрын

If KJ stopped idolizing Villazon (*not* a good role model for vocal longevity), found and actual pedagogue to fix her technique (and not one of the "celebrity" coaches on Britain's Got Talent etc.) she would be able to sing opera in smaller houses. Obviously there's a voice there, but all of these mannerisms and manipulations make it impossible for her to sustain a consistent projected line (without a microphone, that is)
@flicfan41611 жыл бұрын
Well, we've already established through our enlightening detour into Bob Dylan that in addition to knowing absolutely nothing about opera you appear to know little about any style of music, so I won't bore you with the specific reasons that I dislike the interpretations of Netrebko. But, again, the idea that it has to do with looks is ludicrous. I recently attended the debut of the gorgeous and talented Pretty Yende, and I plan to see her many times in the future.
@serrateresa11 жыл бұрын
Actually, no it's not a straw man argument, it shows that popularity isn't the same as greatness. She isn't a great singer. If Miley Syrus is a bad example, there are plenty of others e.g. Justin Bieber. Again, you don't seem to understand the difference between entertainment and art as well as pop and classical. In pop, popularity today is a sign of artistic achievement, a single most important measure of success. In arts - be it dance, music, painting, popularity isn't the same as greatness.
