Amanda Bearse (played Marcy Darcy) was one of the writers and several of the insults (especially the ones Al threw at her) were written by her. Also, if you noticed, a lot of the large women getting insulted were repeat extras and loved being on set. Most were cracking up during filming of the insults that it took several takes. TV was a different time back then & all was good.

The Shamu part at the end made me laugh so hard I was crying. 🤣 As for the show itself you have to understand this was the era of wholesome sitcoms where everyone was so sweet you'd get diabetes from watching it. Full House, The Cosby Show, Family Matters and so on. Where all the dads were teachers and philosophers saying kind and deep words of wisdom and had an overwhelming love for all humanity. The writers of this show HATED all of it. The original title, before the networks made them change it, was actually NOT THE COSBYS! Married With Children was the anti-family sitcom show and they went all in with it and got away with as much as they could. That passion to make this completely unlike any other tv show is why it's still fondly remembered and why the jokes are still so funny!

Every body made fun of everybody on that show. Sometimes AL's 'targets' deserved it. Sometimes they didn't - he could be a jerk. Sometimes they got him back, sometimes they didn't. Some episodes Al won, some he lost, some he was the heel, others the hero, but he always, always muddled through, same with the other characters (like his family) on that show. And that's why it was beloved for ten years and why so many of us miss it so many years later.

If you think about it, Al is exactly like 98% of most people, and yes they think the same way. The difference is, Al says out loud what people today are afraid to say Loudly and butthurt someone. Anytime I am confronted by a sarcastic or rude person, my mind goes into the same mode as Al's does. Like if someone says Larry do you think I have a big mouth and talk too much? I might say No ..... but I am thinking Your mouth is as big as a mountain that flows into your flowing river of talk.". Only Al would say it out loud. Back then, ask your mom, we had thicker skin and that is why we were able to laugh at it.

I love Al Bundy and your reactions were great, especially Shamu. Al has the best insults. In real life though, a friend of mine came up with a similar insult. We were sitting at a table in a hobby shop and a rather large customer came in and sat down. His friend said he was going to get something to eat and asked the large guy what he wanted. He responded he wanted something filling. My friend piped up with "What, a whole cow?"

I watched Married With Children already during the 1980s, it aired also in Finland. This series was great because everyone got their share of exaggeratedly rude comments and treatment, even Al Bundy himself. The stuff they were saying and doing to each other had a counter-effect; the uglier it got the more it took out the edge from nasty comments and even occasional violence. If you couldn't see the absurdity, you got the whole series wrong. I loved it, my family loved it and most of my friends loved it. 😁
