So cool to see how you have progressed from "perfect student" to today. With my own personal life I was also raised to go into a high-paying office job but have entered my "fuck-it" era, seeing this video reminded me of the idea that people (especially women) who didn't act out in their teens end up doing so in their 20's when the stakes are higher.

So excited to see where your unemployment journey leads you! I also work in tech in the Bay Area and the grind is so real. I quit a job that I hated in Feb 2020 and took about 5 weeks off. I hiked alone every day, journaled, read so many books, spent time with friends and family, etc. I slowed down for the first time and it was exactly what I needed. I was initially planning on taking 4-6 months off, but a great opportunity dropped in my lap. As a fellow overachiever who has experienced burnout one too many times, I love this for you. Also your hair is f*cking rad ❤️

I quit my job in Dec and it was the best thing I could’ve done. I’ve been living at home so my expenses are that much compared to most people. But I was able to save up for an emergency fund. Now I work part time and learning on the side (+ doing apprenticeships) to transition into another career. I’ve already decided that I don’t want to go back to a very strict company. The place I’m doing my apprenticeship at is very cool, the people are nice and it’s very laid back. And it’s all online and this is exactly what what I want for myself lol. So, I’m glad I took the time to figure out what I want.

Just want to pop in and say: don’t worry about your future employment prospects. I work freelance in the television industry, which means I am unemployed every 5 months or so. Initially, this was terrifying. But over the years, I’ve always found a way to stay above water, to find a new job. Just harass everyone you know and tell them you’re looking for work, and they’ll help you out. And more to the point: you’re an intelligent person, which can’t be underestimated; you’ll be competing against loads of people without your smarts, creativity and experience- which yes, is your privilege, but it’s the truth. you’ll be just fine- even if your first job back isn’t your ideal job, you won’t be out on the streets or eat into your savings. Trust me.

My unemployment wasn't willing, but it's much easier for me to see now all of the ways that it was a fundamental part of the growth that was happening in my life during this time frame. And not growth in a capitalist sense of things I can measure but more in all of the subtle ways in which my life needed to shift. I don't understand the need to set an alarm if you don't have anything to get to in the morning. Why set an alarm for 8-9 hours? Why not just wake up naturally? One of my ambitions in life is to never have to set an alarm. I don't have to for my work. I will achieve this goal when I manage to start homeschooling my child and don't have to get him to school by a certain time.

comrade here! i've been in my unemployment era since i quit my job back in june of 2021, and thankfully i haven't had to worry about things like health insurance and budgeting to pay rent since i still live at home under my parent's health insurance. in this time i've gotten some essential things done like study for and get my GED, get my learner's permit and am starting to learn to drive (despite almost being 21, thanks to driving anxiety, but driving is the only option in the car dependent hell that is the US), and being the most consistent i've ever been in my pursuit of self-studying a foreign language. but after that, and after the pandemic in general, i'm just so ready to kick start my life. i have dual citizenship with the US (where i live) and the EU due to my parents and i'm really itching to be in my ✨starting the next chapter of my life in europe✨ era so i need to get a job and start saving up to have a some sort of cushion for that move and i'm not scrambling to make ends meet as soon as i get there. thank you for sharing your experience, kath!! it's been very valuable to me 💗

This discussion could not be more timely. I just left a job with Kaiser insurance and my new job has a health insurance waiting period... On top of that, I am having some weird and scary health issues at the same time 😬 thankfully, I can get insurance through my fiance but it's literally 4x what I was paying for a premium before, and all the costs within the plan are higher too. If I have a health emergency in the next few weeks, I'll have to pay, GUARANTEED, multiple thousands of dollars for an emergency room visit - in-network, after already paying hundreds of dollars per month?? But hey, at least I won't go bankrupt I guess. The American health system is a joke, but not a funny one. Otherwise, good luck to you in this journey and I hope you're able to get something positive out of it :) I'll be following along

my 6 months unemployed a few years ago were some of the happiest months of my life, but I just entered a new very good career and am now feeling the pressure to work at least 2 years in the field before taking my deserved "break." but when I do, I'm gonna sleep 7 hours a night finally and travel and write and be so blissed out. I think saving for retirement is bullshit. I think people should just work a couple years save up if they can then take some months off because life is short, you never know what's gonna happen, and you should not trust something as precarious as capitalist stock market to provide you retirement, nor should you fuel capitalism. you have a choice. and why toil away your young better health higher energy years and not travel, relax, go out, do stuff instead? waiting until you're old doesn't make sense. fuck the existential dread of worrying about/saving every dime for retirement.

@mellowmorgan i'd love to do this also but am so unsure how to explain to a future employer any gaps in my employment history if/when asked. unfortunately, saying i needed a break to not be depressed by our capitalist culture won't sound great, so it feels awkward navigating that potential convo. do you have any advice on this maybe? totally cool if not, just thought i'd ask
@mellowmorgan2 жыл бұрын
@@dayrodriguez9619 I lied for one job and said my dad had a heart attack and I needed to stay with him for a while. Because they asked about the 3-month gap I had, sure enough. Every once in a blue moon i had to remember my lie, but not often. And i know it's hard to lie sometimes, but that's what the capitalist hellscape gets. Don't feel bad lying on resumes or in interviews. why should you? I'm lucky to have gotten into a field with a huge labor shortage and demand for experienced people, so they are unlikely to care, and it's easy to fudge resumes.
