Kathril, Aspect Warper | EDH Three Ways [Commander Strategies for Every Player]

Perhaps a card that we evaluated poorly initially, Kathril isn't the kind of bug that is going to be repelled by generic insect repellent. In the Three Ways Series, Joel does his best to offer different strategies for building a given commander, but the purpose of Kathril is specific, so this three ways series focuses on important graveyard synergies, to get the most out of Kathril, Aspect Warper. Utilizing cards like Buried Alive, Golgari Grave Troll, and Reanimation effects, Kathril aims to fuel the yard and swing for... well, a lot. About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses different ways to build different Commander decks. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Hellz Yeah!, buried alive, reanimate, zetalpa, i would go with a lifelink/indestructible/doublestrike theme but yours is better😯 i have some of these cards😊 Kathril certainly seems worthy to build around and the art on the card is sweet too! Yeh, this is my next deck. I am considering running a Yawgmoth, Thran Physician in my as I feel it is similar to a fauna shaman for this build. I also want to run Brigid , Hero of the Kinsbaile. Give her a deathtouch counter. I like Vizkocopa guildmage too as it has th potential to hit every player at once if you have lifelink and flying counters spread around.

My build is similar, but I like adding in Athreos, Shroud-Veiled because you can do some interesting things with his coin counters in this deck.

Mmmm.. I considered Corpsejack Menace while building this, works just like Panharmonicon (A fun setup could be Entomb on 1 - Zetalpa, Rampant Growth on 2, Corpsejack Menace on 3, Cathril on 4: leaves you with a 13/13 with double strike, indestructible, flying, trample, viligance - though ideally you want Hexproof before you go all-in on this plan.. maybe with Prowling Serpopod and Destiny Spinner to prevent counterspells) I would probably suggest a few blinks (the slow kind, to avoid exile wipes), also Hexproof + ability are huge too I know at my table, we pass around our decks between each other a lot, we do have a Scarab God at the table so those Hexproof for you as a player seem really nice, there is some graveyard hate about - might be increasing with this deck joining the table lol. I know I'm.. likely to build two decks out of the Enhanced Evolution (one via Zaxara - Hydra focus, one via the Cazur // Ukkima - infect + evasion)

My deck looks a lot like yours but I use ozolith to maintain counters even if kathril leaves and have mimic vat as a secondary flicker ability. I also use counter doublers like doubling season.

thanks for checking out this older vid! Ozolith is a great addition-- I have loved mimic vat for years. Great card, and you really can't go wrong with Doubling Season in any deck that it can synergize in.

You can also throw in Opalescence to turn Doubling Season into a 5/5. Then helm of the host to make make 2 copy tokens of it since DS doubles the tokens. So you can triple your counters. Excessive and redundant? Yes. Fun when you beat the table with 4 83/83 Kathrils? Also yes. They will submit to their new buggy god

I'm working in my Kathril build (currently at 108). Mine will be a heavy self mill deck with the overall strategy being excellent keywords plus lots of creatures and then running 7 or 8 creatures that somehow have a p/t boost for the numbers of creatures/cards in the gy. Cast Kathril and put all of the counters on my massive creature and just go ham with it. Also running Jarad as a way to punch the table with these monsterous creatures.

This is an old video, but my main commander is kathril, I've been playing her as a mix of voltron, but also with a second theme of superfriends as well. But recent changes to it feel like it's making the deck worse. So this video has given me a few ideas. Ps vorinclex monstrous raider deffo has to be in any kathril deck lol

How does panharmonicon work with kathril. I'm hearing a lot of people saying his ETB wouldn't trigger.

It would trigger still. People saying otherwise don't quite understand the card. You can stack flying counters onto a creature twice for example, and though having flying twice on a creature doesn't do anything, it does still count as having 2 counters on him which would give him 2 +1 counters.

Made me come back to magic with a group of friends and look through all our old cards. I recently ordered 2 kaldheim preconstructed commanders since I wanted to try them. I am about to set up a Kathril deck and am currently playing rienne, angel of rebirth. Unfortunately, it's hard to find days to play a few rounds since they take so long. Thanks for your video man, really gave me a few ideas on Kathril. *Edit* we play via discord since it's not allowed to meet up in Germany due to the circumstances. How do you play?
