Welcome to another installment of Precon Power-Up! this time, we are looking at the Symbiotic Swam Abzan Precon from Commander 2020, Ikoria's commander set! This deck is full of keywords, graveyard synergies, and a giant threat in Kathril. We are taking a look at the spells and upgrading this preconstructed deck with a budget of only $50. The Commander’s Legend Akroma want’s to be in this deck. Kethril can load up creatures with keywords and Akroma will give them +1/+1 for each keyword.

Ramunap Hydra is a solid budget inclusion that gives vigilance, reach and trample. It's also really easy to boost its power by slotting a few deserts in the mana base :)

Ok I've been watching a lot of symbiotic swarm content recently and this is by far the best one! I think you nailed the goal of the deck perfectly: play a bunch of cantripping dorks and sac them to fill your graveyard, then bring out big boys with hexproof, indestructible and double strike. Some cards you left out (probably because of budget) include carnage tyrant, greater good, guardian project, eerie ultimatum and painful truths, as well as the cheap reanimation cards. A combo I've been enjoying is bloodghast and golgari thug with skullclamp. You can send both to the graveyard with buried alive and get your deck going with draws and dredge. I personally LOVE Lurrus of the Dream Den because it can get artifacts you milled back as well as 1 and 2 drops you wanna trigger on ETB again. It also contributes with the lifelink keyword.

Am I crazy or did Ikoria just bless this deck: Corpse Churn ($0.06)Instant (CMC 2) Put the top three cards of your library into your graveyard, then you may return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand. and Excavation Mole ($0.04) Creature 3/3 (CMC 3) Trample; When Excavation Mole enters the battlefield, put the top three cards of your library into your graveyard.

I initially like the price point you went for. Everything I’ve seen is like a super budget ~$20 upgrade that is good but not very synergized. The $50 upgrade price point really upped the ability to go for a more synergized approach and is still relatively budget. ~$100 is great for a good synergized deck that is competitive (at least in my play group) Also the gravy boat prop 😂

I personally kept Mimic Vat in my deck, because, if my enemies get rid of Kathril repeatedly I can now negate commander tax AND give her haste when she comes back. Then I added in Ozolith (which is outside the budget you put for this but I saw the use for it), which makes sure that even if they kill her and then get rid of my graveyard, she'll come back and get all of her counters back.

Buried Alive. There it is 7:20. The first card everyone thought of. Also Lightning Greaves. This needs haste. Animate Dead would be neat too, but it costs a buck or two. 8:50 That's a neat card that I didn't know about. What about Congregation at Dawn? 16:55 Why not Paradise Druid?

Paradise Druid would have been sweet but it doesn't actually HAVE hexproof , only a static ability that sometimes grants hexproof. Congregation at Dawn would be neat, as would something like Jarad's Orders

I'm surprised that you say remove mimic vat, it's a perfect companion to lots of cards in the deck with ETB that would feed your graveyard push (Satyr Wayfinder is excellent here - land and graveyard growth both), be a general board state assist (Hornet Queen anyone?), sac, etc triggers or even things that would be one-turn non-commander swings like Cairn Wanderer, Majestic Myriarch and more. The biggest difficulty is just getting it back in play if it has been destroyed; cards like Skullwinder are a good help there.

The ONLY two brick cards I use are edifice of authority and oracles vault. We play a much slower meta so the ramp from vault can be VERY good while Edifice gives an opportunity to deny specific attackers or blockers if necessary. With some additional aid against the right decks

What I did for mine is use cards that I already have and added several things that can sacrifice other things and heal me when they do

Winding Constrictor and Pir, Imaginative Rascal get this thing to a max 26/26. They essentially get it two keyword counters so x2 (+1/+1)+1 bonus

The thing about Living Death or Living End that your paraphrasing overlooks is that creatures do not ETB from the graveyard but from exile. Therefore, something like Flayer of the Hatebound does NOT work with Living Death. This is a big deal for my Anje deck and actually forced me to redesign it somewhat.

What are your thoughts on Grapple with the Past ($0.19), Eerie Ultimatum ($1.06), Return to Nature ($0.14), Syr, Conrad the Grim ($0.30), Jarad's Orders ($0.71), or Final Parting ($1.16)

Jarad's Orders and Final Parting are awesome for the deck, especially on a budget! Nailed it with those two. Grapple is a card I've always loved and it seems to fit well. it's basically a cantrip that advances your plan a little bit, only slight downside is that it's an instant. Syr Konrad it depends on your deck if there's going to be a critical mass of things dying then he gets better. Ultimatum is amazing too, gotta be one of the coolest abzan cards in the set. Kind of a nonbo with a huge Kathril. unless you do it afterwards, and even if you do it before, it's like... okay here's my whole deck kill them or die

I got this deck today and I immediately noticed it was horrible stock, didnt do anything that he wanted to do. So I just used cards I had and it basically looked alot like your guys build. It feels so good when you get all the keywords stacked on him. I think genesis might be a card to consider. Because after you get him out theres kinda not a whole lot to do. Other than fend off the table but With genesis you can get some of those keyword creatures back in your hand every turn.

I think I'd prefer the precons as great builds for the cover commander, with two extra cards either with no synergy (the other two commander options) or just as extra cards you get with the precon. probably a tough call that we are not qualified to make!

I completely understand why you cut Soulflayer but I played the base precon against my friends Jaya Ballard deck, which usually destroys me, and I was able to beat him because of Soulflayer. He had a Torpor Orb in play cutting off ETB triggers so I wasn't able to play Kathril. The way Soulflayer is worded it gets the counters without an ETB. So, for this specific instance, it was more useful than my commander. Most other times, it's just a dead card but tonight it saved my ass. Anyways, love the channel and thanks for all the content.

What do you think of taking the deck in a lower to the ground direction? Getting keywords in to the yard by milling can be inconsistent and limit resources (missing land drops). Can you use low CMC creatures with keywords as chump blockers to fill the yard; examples would be Healer's Hawk, Vampire of the Dire Moon, Banehound, Dreadmalkin, Alseid of Life's Bounty, Defiant Elf, or Gnarlwood Dryad?

could be another way to build this deck, however you might be better off sacrificing them rather than chump blocking. Opponent's probably don't want your enablers in the yard so they'll avoid putting them there for you if they can

Everyone talks crap about the impetus cards. I think the black and blue ones are actually really good. I left parasitic impetus in this deck. Also arcane signet is great in almost any deck regardless of budget.

I think you need to add some flexibility; you can't just stare blindly at keyword soup. The Creatures you are using early game need to be advancing your board state, and developing your plan. Therefore I'd suggest looking at Birds of Paradise, Bone Shredder, Hidden Dragonslayer, Vampire Hexmage, and, to add another keyword, Filth.

Filth is actually one of the cards we added and didn't touch on in the video lol. Sadly birds is out of price range for this particular upgrade, but it's probably sweet. If we have to play one of our dorks like Bassara Tower Archer or Adorned Pouncer, we have ways to turn it into cards (Skullclamp, Grim Haruspex, Midnight Reaper, Erebos) and get it into the graveyard. Bone Shredder might have been a pretty cool add though.

Unfortunately for us, Lathril only cares if the creature HAS the ability, but if the creature can gain the ability or gives it to something else it doesn’t count :/

Well, you don't really want Kathril to die obviously, but Damnation can be fine as long as you play it first. Also sends your dorks and dummies that might have keywords to the graveyard

Rayami is way slower and harder to get going, so I'd say Kathril is definitely better. Plus, even if you get awesome keywords, you still have just a 5/4. Feels like they missed a little with that card

Cool upgrade! Quite sure I value flying a little more than you guys and I'd probably rather have aerialist and nighthawk rather than the options you mentioned (which are still quite good) . Did you guys think about Final Parting for the deck? I run it in a few decks and it routinely overperforms!

@@maxloggins2930 I bought the precon a few days before watching this video. After watching this, I spent a whole day comparing it to other upgrade suggestions. I already had a standard Black, Green, White deck, so I decided to combine the precon with that deck to make my own EDH deck. I added some Legendary synergy just because it felt fun, and bought 32 cards to flesh out the graveyard mechanics. Spent about $35 on the upgrades, so it wasn't too bad. Power levels are tough in general because they're so subjective. But I'd say this deck went from somewhere around 3 to a 5, or 4 to a 6. Maybe even a 2 to 5, it was really unfocused. But that's not really the fault of the precon, it needs to have the beginnings of three different decks in it

You could, we just didn't want to play any creatures EXCLUSIVELY for hexproof. that's why we went with Bassara Tower archer because it had reach which is a tough keyword to find actually because reach creatures suck lol. With one or two more discard outlets, i'd say you can start playing those cards and not feel too bad. If you just care about the keyword though, might as well go for the cheapest options like Gladecover Scout, Sacred Wolf, etc

You know part of why people don't play Tragic Arrogance is the boring subject material. Art - Not interesting Story - Boring Character - Zzzz I never found anything about Gideon's character compelling until he died. I'm not trying to hate, but I even liked Garruk more and I don't feel like he has much personality either. I really hope they do a reprint on another plain with entirely different subject material and art. Until then I guess I'll just be happy with Mythos of Snapdax

Me and Joe make fun of Gideon all the time, or at least we used to when he was more relevant. His story is garbage. Every single plane with gideon brings a new story of him being tragically arrogant and apparently learning nothing. "Oh no, my arrogance got my friends killed." "Oh no, my arrogance got a lot of Zenikari slain by the Eldrazi." "Oh no, my arrogance got the Blackblade destroyed." Boooo. Add that he got "Gideon" from "Kytheon" and it's just bad lol.

Yeah we are not at all stoked about Bonder's Ornament or any of the Impetus cycle. SUCH low impact. Only really interesting in the "precon battle" meta

I don't agree with the Kunoros dog trade off. I even left Vampire Nighthawk and Aerial Responder in the deck. 3 keywords for those el cheapos. That dwarf even won me the game when it was on the field. Also: Golgari Grave troll works wonders
