From the musical pen of Sigmund Romberg we hear these two beautiful and professional actors, and singing performers! This represents 2 of the loveliest melodies from "The Desert Song!" Their song is from Sigmund Rombeg, the book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Otto Harbach and Frank Mandel.
Here are 2 classics performed by the very best artists of the day: Kathryn Grayson, and Gordon MacRae! Steve Cochran is featured because he never got a break! He was almost always portrayed as the villain, or got "rubbed-out" too soon! Aside from the obvious, this is also a tribute to Steve!

I have watched this movie so many times and I still love it as much as the first time I saw it. I adore Gordon Mcrae, always have and always will. What a great measure of a man he was, with his handsome looks and glorious voice. Kathryn Grayson was beautiful and so gifted with her angelic voice. These two beautiful souls gave us so much pleasure with their music, and contine to do so to this very day. God bless them both.

I love the movie, and there are so many beautiful songs from it. I was raised on this music. My grandparents met in a musical theatre company in England just after WW1. They sang duets at home, and I heard them sing this song! I am a soprano and Kathryn Grayson was my idol growing up. I had a big crush on Gordon MacRae.

408knw I agree with you. Gordon MacRae has always been my favourite singer since I saw Carousel in the 50's. Now I've been able to get all of his back catalogue on CD that I hadn't heard before thanks to the internet. Anyway, he was a baritone and Lanza a tenor. Lanza had operatic training, MacRae didn't, he was a self taught big band singer like Frank Sinatra. I still prefer Gordon to anyone else.

I haven't watched the full movie since seeing it in the late fifties and am hoping that Warner Bros will eventually release it on DVD, so it's nice to see these clips again because MacRae, for me, is still the best singer I've ever heard. They changed the name of his character from the Red Shadow because of the McCarthy communist witch hunt in Hollywood at the time and thought it not appropriate. (so I've recently read, for anyone interested in minor facts about this movie)

Hello Anthony Lampert, I, too, hope for a future release of this film. Mr. MacRae indeed had one amazing voice, and Hollywood had a habit of coupling incongruous performers together. Thankfully, this was not the case here! Together, they're superb here! Thanks so much for your mention!

A great pity that most youngsters today accept cacophonous dross in lieu of the quality which one finds in music so beautifully presented by Kathryn Grayson and Gordon MacRae. Thank goodness we have computers and DVDs to keep their memory and talent so fresh. It is a surprising combination, since Grayson did her best musicals for MGM and MacRae for Warner Brothers.

MacRae could do what few singers have ever done; sing with power and croon softly. Most can do one but not the other. Crosby never sang with power. Sinatra always sang with power. Lanza could croon softly, but preferred to let it all out, like he was singing each song for the last time. Lanza loved to finish with some impossibly high, glass shattering note. MacRae could do both, sometimes in the same song. In "Oklahoma" listen to his "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin" and listen for his lovely, crooning finish! In Carousel, MacRae sings "If I Loved You" twice; the first time with power, the second time he croons it softly. I don't think anyone else has ever done it softly. I don't believe MacRae was entirely self taught. No one sings like that without some vocal or musical instruction.

Here are the lyrics of the song(s) if anyone is interested (or would like to sing along with): Kathryn Grayson: If one flower grows alone in your garden, Its fragrant sweetness will soon pass away. If one flower grows alone in your garden; Soft petals blooming must wither some day. Your garden should be overflowing With budding flowers of varied perfume; So gather your precious collection A garden of blossoms are ever in bloom One flower alone One flower alone will pass away Gordon Macrae: Lonely as a desert breeze I may wonder where I please Yet I keep on longing Just to rest a while Where a sweetheart's tender eyes Take the place of sand and skies All the world forgotten In one woman's smile One alone, to be my own I alone, to know her caresses One to be, eternally The one my worshipping soul possesses At her call, I'd give my all All my life and all my love enduring This would be a magic world to me If she were mine alone Kathryn Grayson: At his call, I'd give my all All my life and all my love enduring Together: This would be a magic world to me If you were mine alone

With no complaint about the performers this is a perversion of the Romberg magic. The song was truly trying to say that why should the red shadow be content with just one woman. And the next one "One alone" was his riposte. To reduce all the sexual overtones is to lose the content and thrust of the romance of ""The desert song".
