Johnnys daughter upon hearing this "dad its like your saying goodbye?" Cash: "i am"
@pam101411 ай бұрын
The song is from Trent Reznor. Here is a quote from him after it was released "I never got to meet Johnny but I’m happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. I have goosebumps right now thinking about it. Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that’s something that matters to me. It’s not so much what other people think but the fact that this guy felt that it was worthy of interpreting.”
@pam101411 ай бұрын
June wasn't supposed to be in the video she came downstairs during filming and as we all seen was extremely emotional watching Jonny. One of his daughters commented to him, dad it sounds like your saying goodbye! Jonny said I am. A couple of months later June died and Jonny followed soon after!

There is so much poignancy in the song and video, but for me the way he closes and caresses the piano lid at the end of the video is very powerful. Like a wistful but loving goodbye.
@thancrow11 ай бұрын
I might be wrong, but I heard that this video was the last time he played that piano.

The visuals in the video make it hit even harder. Seeing the picture of his mother, seeing his wife June standing on the stairs. In particular, for me, seeing him jump on the train when he was footloose and fancy-free. Then the dove flying and the piano closing at the end. Get's me every time. A masterpiece.

Sunday morning coming down helped get me sober. I love Johnny Cash

It's quite the message, isn't it? Johnny Cash had pretty much seen everything and done everything. He either already had or could have anything material in this world he wanted. But as he felt the end approaching, he counted it all as an "empire of dirt" and had the same pain and regrets at the end of life as the rest of us.

Tre women, everybody is shocked, i see. ...for different reasons. The young woman understood something just happened, but is not able to understand all, of course, she is so young and so full of hope and new live... but she moves her head, and, sometime that moving becomes strange, hard, quick, she doe's not realize all, but something, something! ...her mom is afraid for her daughter, for the strong deep under the words that her daughter is listening...and all the mean of that terrible beautiful reality song. The mom of the mom, the older woman, is so sweet, the strongest of the tre, she knows all that the song mean and she feel exactly all. If you stop the movie at 12:15, you can see and understand that all i just said (over my bad writing, cause i'm french and just learned 2 years English ) I'm right. A kiss for all you tre, gentle women!

As you can see user-bobcrosier has once again copied & pasted my comments that I have used for over 2 years. KZbin does not allow Plagiarism. Sad that people do that. This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

Jonny cash wrote over 80 of his own songs not including some he co wrote with his wife and other artists , this one is not his song but a group called nine inch nails and there lead singer wrote this song about drugs , Cash made it about his life and things that he did wrong , his wife who is seen in this video died only a few months after the video and he passed a few months later , it was his last ever song .

Trent Reznor wrote it, but I think without knowing it, he wrote it for Johnny, because the way they brought the hole Johnny Cash history into this, it fit perfectly, even though the song was about drug abuse. The video was perfect, and the fact that Johnny was at end of life, even if we didn't know it, fit perfectly into the message. What an icon!
