Oh my god I'm obsessed with Dowry of Blood and I'm only 7% through the KU version. The way it's written and just the beginnings of the story are so compelling right from the beginning. I've already started looking for a physical copy of the book to annotate, I really like the Bookish Box edition so that's the one I'm hunting for. 🐐

I would like to recommend Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao because GOOD FOR HER !!!!! This story follows all 5 rules that were mentioned in the beginning and my god is it an absolute ride. The most feminine rage I've EVER felt while reading a book. Zetian grows up in a world based on ancient China where humans live on one side of "The Great Wall" to protect themselves from the aliens that have come to their world and live freely on the other side of the wall. To fight these aliens, the government created mechas piloted by men and women (the women are called "concubines") combat them. But there's a catch- the women never survive a battle, but the men always return home to glory. Zetian's sister is given up as a concubine and dies before even making it to the battle field. And this pisses off our main character who goes on an absolute rampage against her government. AND IT'S SO GOOD. Highly recommend!

I always recommend They Never Learn. Top-notch good for her for sure! And definitely Dolores Claiborne and Carrie. I just finished my MA in English Thesis which focused on the power of intergenerational female connection in Stephen King's It, Carrie, Gerald's Game, and Dolores Claiborne. I also LOVE The Weight of Blood, too. It is such an incredible reimagining of King's Carrie. Also, I totally agree with you, too, about A Dowry of Blood -- such a beautifully written good for her story! Bunny -- also one of my favorites, too. Mona Awad is an autobuy author for me. I can't wait to read Rouge🐐

I’d add “The Color Purple” to the list, both the novel & the film adaptation. Speilberg’s handling of the lesbian scene might be seen as humorously absurd, & his return to religious patriarchy ending is criticized, but the acting in the movie was absolutely unforgettable. It’s one of the few stories, both formats, that made me cry, cheer… gives all the “good for her” feels. It’s impact (it’s a Pulitzer & other prize winner) is profound & while at Uni, I had the opportunity to take many a wonderful deep-dive into the narrative, the author Alice Walker, & all the academic research that followed its publication.

I love Good For Her stories, thanks Katie. Just wanted to say Bunny is not a difficult book to understand, and it's not Good For Her at all. Speculative fiction is always "is it magic or mental illness?". The fever dream writing allows metaphors, allegories and ambiguity to say something you don't dare to say outright (Schrodinger's asshole). Samantha is a NLOG, the only one on the writing class with real raw talent. The other women, (rich, pretty and glad of being friends in contrast to underdog Sam), are all misogynistic stereotypes who formed a cult like clique to copy and exploit each other because neither has "real" talent like Sam. The "darlings" are the writing drafts (Kill your darlings, get It?). The darlings being the Bunnies "perfect men" means they're writing romance. Sam's darlings are better than the Bunnies, she gave life to a realistic brutish male that also reflects her own anger or whatever, the Bunnies are raging out of jealousy and turn on each other. That's it. That's the book. Good For Her books i also liked: Out by Natsuo Kirino, Where The Crawdads Sing, The Giver Of Stars, The Female of the Species, Sadie, Gone Girl. Móvies i love Practical Magic, Sucker Punch, Gone Girl, Sugar & Spice, Heathers, Jennifer's Body if we erase from our conscience the ending and imagine both Jennifer and Needy went after the bad guys... The Craft if we erase the ending were the White rich girl takes away the power from the others: the disable girl with cronic pain and desfigured by burns, the black girl mad at racists and the poor girl with abusive parents... Also i don't feel Barbie was a good Good For Her story because they babygirlified abusers neglecting patriarchy is systemic, and It panders to this bullshit "men loneliness pandemic" propaganda that goes around justifying the increasing violence against women. Also at the end Barbie accepts "not all nights have to be girls night" on a fantasy world created to give women positive representation to help us deal with the soul crushing horrors of patriarchy 😂 give us a break
