Fun fact, Barkeeper's friend is NOT an abrasive, but a mild acid cleaner made from RHUBARB and other vegetable waste! It's the natural Oxalic acid from the plants that does most of the cleaning without abrading. Who knew? The acid is what cleans the metal so well as it gets rid of the oxidation.

The finish is so soft, you’d just want to brush your hand over this piece of furniture. The finish is night and day. It’s 3.20am in Australia and your restoration makes not sleeping a little easier to bare.

For large, unwieldy pieces of furniture, I use tie down straps, lightly tighten them, adjust and glue as necessary and then tighten it to dry overnight. It doesn't mark the wood but holds the entire thing like a giant vice.

Wow, I'm the first in! Would you attempt this on oak cabinets, and if so would you do anything differently? It seems during the general hate on yellow oak, and craze for shaker, everyone tried to obscure the grain. But I now see a small quiet trend towards accentuating it, along with the more prominent patterns in marble. BTW when I was a kid they called this "pickling".

I think it's very interesting. I mean that in a good way. It almost looks like bare wood, almost - perhaps because it's so soft and neutral. It feels like the finish is very wood forward. Great catch and fix on the side panel/drawer slides. Yay to Mr. Salvage for the assistance. I'm really glad you did the drawers as well. I find it so nice when the insides are loved up too.

Really like all the details you go through on the videos. They are so informative, but not boring with too much detail. As everyone knows, prep (not the fun part, but necessary) is always the key to a great finished product and you explain the processes very well. I do furniture restore as a hobby and always looking for different techniques. Thank you for taking the time and sharing. I’ll be looking for new videos often. This piece turned out beautiful also.

lovely results! a tip I learned decades ago: to remove an old original brown shellac (often a faux mahogany) try straight ammonia--it will dissolve the original shellac and stain and run off like root beer. This only works if there isn't a polyurethane or varathane top coat.

You did a great job and it looks very nice. Kudos for wearing proper respirator when using those chemicals and disposing of the scraped paint properly. A few suggestions from someone who has been refinishing furniture for 50 years. You can get the exact same effect at half the time and not wasting so much paint or tung oil finish by applying each of those wearing gloves with a cotton rag rubbing it into the wood and wiping at the same time. Also when putting putty on areas of the wood you will save a lot of time sanding it off and get a better affix to the wood by using a flexible putty knife rather than a popsicle stick.

It is just the right mix if doing and inspiration and someone also working while you do, and not too distracting but occupying thoughts halfway is enough. Just perfect. Faux tiger oak was so popular and a PAIN to refinish! Shellac on a lot of them too... I love the grain on this maple one, it takes the lighter stain so well and is less "in-your-face" than oak. And those little hand sanders are the BEST and they used to carry them at DOLLARAMA! The little sandpaper pieces last so long and if you buy a few kits its so easy to keep one of each grade around. Nice work!
