I've been burned out for 1.5 years now, if not even longer but that's when I got my diagnosis and the first thing me and my therapist did was break down my weekly schedule completely and then slowly build it up again through time, starting with taking care of the dishes every day, and then vacuuming once a week, then meet a friend once a week. Just doing one thing at a time until it's not giving me anxiety and making me feel exhausted anymore, and create a more realistic life where I don't have to do everything, all the time. Last week I learned that turning my phone off every once in a while is really important as it's stressing me out so much that I constantly feel like I have to be online and be updated on everything. It's almost as if I'm doing two things at once all the time, keeping an eye on my phone and whatever the else I'm doing. Turn the phone off!!

I love when he says "Quit your fucking job" because I love the simplicity of that solution but it might not be practical. Kati herself said she used to work 3 jobs and still couldn't get by (it be like that in California) so it doesn't sound like she had a choice. But she made a key point: the reward needs to change. I can encourage myself when I get burnt out on school because it's temporary. But some people's situations seem to stretch indefinitely and they either have to find a way to adapt or alter the situation. And they do talk about that in the video.
@whichonespink75 жыл бұрын
I like when he touches on human evolution not preparing us for this. This is something I've thought a lot about. We're all supposed to conform to a cookie cutter 9-5 lifestyle and there's so much emphasis put on "the hustle." But we're all so different with totally different needs and lifestyles that work best for us, and the 9-5 hustle doesn't adapt with that diversity. The biggest tragedy is that instead of questioning the system itself, we just blame ourselves when we experience burnout. This has defined my twenties and I wish I had realized this truth much sooner.
@georgemulford29105 жыл бұрын
Well said. I think a lot of that starts in school which I think is used to condition people to get them ready for the 9-5 and not finding their unique needs and lifestyle like you said.

The way our world works scares me and I don't want to have to live in it.. I don't feel like I can because I am personally extremely emotional, so I can't stand feelings like boredom, stress and things like that.. I tend to catch mental disorders like depression, burn-out, anxiety and more to come! I have immense qualities because of my emotions but it can be such a burden to be overly emotional and empathetic in a society that makes narcissists and work/focused people succed.

Not to mention that business owners don't want to put enough staff on to relieve the stress of the job. I don't even have the option to reduce my hours, because I am only one of two employees who run a Breakfast buffet. This means, preparing and cooking food, keeping enough out on the buffet table, restocking all of the condiments (and coffee cups, cream, sugar, napkins, etc.), plus keep the dining room clean. Oh, and if we have a moment to breathe, that's when we go clean the lobby entrance and vacuum the hallways. It is a major stress-and-a-half, and this is how businesses run today, which makes me feel hopeless because I know that I am eventually going to have a total break down (and probably be let go).

Burnout: situation-specific depression Depression: life burnout
@thisisntallowed95605 жыл бұрын
I don't know. I've had depression and I think I have a burn out right now, and these two emotions are very different. When you're depressed, well, you're depressed and have suicidal thoughts, but when you're burned out it feels more like stress and worrying, and you feel extremely depressed but only when you're in the situation that made you burned out. I guess it's possible to feel burned out from life too..

I work at a residential facility as a therapist. I've been battling burnout for months. I really feel, as a newer therapist, that I have to take my knocks and show I'm worth my salt, but the job is highly unstructured, sometimes genuinely dangerous, boundaries are problematic, and has a high workload. Despite a rotating effort to maintain a work-life balance and self-care routine it keeps slipping in favor of work and I have been getting sick often. But most other people think what I'm doing is so *wonderful* that it seems like I'd be betraying the community by leaving and I don't know that many would support the choice. I'm also not sure it wouldn't be out of the frying pan and into the fire.

For me, it really helped to know that we can suffer from burnout from things not necessarily job-related like being a stay at home mom or maybe even studying. Because there were times in my life when I was going through this and I wasn't working at that time. I had no idea why I was being so... emotional. Naturally, if the amygdala is enlarged, it'd make things like anger outbursts or even crying spells that much more common and it helps me understand myself better. Thanks Katie, really helped

Lynn R the irony is the teachers who are the best at handling troubled kids tend to get the most of them! A principal I once worked w/ at an inner-city school once told me that everyone has a few good years to give. Then you either leave for a less stressful school or you burnout and become apathetic. (We both left soon after that)

Lynn R, something similar happened to me with teaching. Too much workload with too many years of getting the more difficult students pushed me out the door of education. I didn’t feel appreciated for my work and I knew I had to leave because I didn’t want my students to suffer. I feel a sense of guilt that I left, but I know it is what is right for my mental, physical and emotional health. I’m now in the recovery period and I’m looking into other career possibilities. I've been thinking that I'm dealing with burnout right now. This video almost solidified a couple viewpoints that affirms what I thought. It was good to know that the symptoms of burnout and depression are similar because that's what I thought I was feeling, but felt that it wasn't depression. Also...my mind blew open when you talked about how we can feel guilty on the negative feelings, even when the positive feelings are a tangible thing. I've been getting many compliments on what I've done at my job, but don't take time to acknowledge probably because I'm viewing/nitpicking the negative out of it. The "i could've done this better" or "I need to work on this". That has been such a constant going on that it makes me feel better knowing that that is also a sign of burnout.

Now I'm on Zoloft and feeling better, but I know that burnout stalks me and with it a worsening of my symptoms. Here's what I do: - Make a point of connecting with friends. With or without the kids. Just meeting for an hour at the park to chat while the kids run around can fuel the rest of the day. - Cut myself some slack and say yes to things that aren't mission critical. I'm trying to become ok with "good enough." -Let my husband parent when he is home. I don't want to be the go-to for everything in the house. I want my kids to know that their father is just as capable as I am.

I tried to ask for 1 day off a week, it just wasn't happening, along with trying new medications, I was a safety hazard, so i had to quit my job, sell my house. I was never the same after that. Something in my brain BROKE. (sweatshop like settings) These people have no other option but do those horrible jobs (and we, people in richer countries are allowing this to happen), they don't even have the option to be 'burn-out' and take a leave of absence, go on a holiday, go to therapy etc.? Can we also focus on those people, people who don't have it as well as the people in rich countries? Thank you.

Back when I used to volunteer at a rabbit rescue I was told that burnout is very common in the rescue world (and also that vets have a high rate of suicide). Seeing so many bad cases and animals dying despite your efforts, as well as the emotional effect of witnessing neglect and trying to educate ignorant/stubborn people. It all gets too much...but then you feel guilty for feeling that way because the animals need an avdvocate and continued support. It takes a lot of emotional and mental strength to be involved in that world.

Thank you for another great discussion Kati. It’s very comforting to know that professionals such as yourself and Dr. Lieberman are able to explain these issues so openly and simply. My thoughts are that feelings of burnout and depression are normal in our lives as humans. I think that what is so important is how each of us develop a sense of self awareness and instinctual confidence when we go thru those feelings, and it is so important that during that period, almost step outside of our body and mind to take an objective look at ourselves as it is happening. Then, we can see how it is possible to overcome it by acknowledging it, accepting that it is normal to feel that way, and gain perspective which is what will help us rid our ill thoughts. Almost like riding an ocean wave. We can survive it if we just believe that we are capable of handling it. And always knowing that we are not alone. Ever. 🙏❤️

And a lot of impostor syndrome, with recruiting agencies, colleagues, expectations that put upskilling and retraining onto my own efforts (outside of work), etc. I've now reached the point of thinking of canning it, going back to study a different new career, and just do software as a hobby thing, plus it gives more time for enjoyable hobbies (Photography, Languages).

Great presentation. Thanks. Just came through a bout of burnout that I felt was related to having plateaued in my quest for self-improvement. That led to depression. After having congestive heart failure l was forced to re-evaluate my direction in life which surprisingly reduced my burnout and as a direct result got rid of my depression. Now I look forward to a renewed sense of direction with new vitality. Hope this message was helpful. Thanks again for your presentation.

When my therapist diagnosed me, eye didnt ask what the means, so eye had know eyedear what what happening. While watching greys anatomy they opened up with a thorough description of burnout and cause. Really sparked my interest, eye began to reserch and look for ways to heal my amygdala. Eye found havening, it helped not fully healed but better. That's good enough for me.

Great video Kati enjoying this new series. There's still so much science to explore with the long term effects of cortisol in the body and mind over a long life and whether it leads to age related brain issues later in life. It's crazy that if you can control your anxiety/stress levels at work you can control your cortisol levels. It's just difficult to master.

The only perfect about my life atm was the timing of this video. I've been depressed for months and I recently burnt out too, it's horrible and of course no one believes me. Thank you for this video.

Amazingly informative and the perfect amount of laughs Kati! Love listening to you interview others as you bring out the gold in a subject. Especially like the animations too, the conversation starters and homework. Love the editing styles and tips I am learning from you gurus! Wonder if DJ Sean will be animated?? Hahaha. Keep up the great work legends!! Thanks for changing our world, our brains and our lives. A series like this on trauma would be so helpful and needed around mental health circles and conversations.

This series is tremendously helpful! I'm between therapists and psychiatrists right now and I'm just realizing that I had untreated burnout over the last several years in addition to my major depression. The headaches and brain fog, sleep trouble, and constant fatigue... I kept wondering why my medication changes weren't helping all this time and wondering what direction to go with my doctors. I have some new insight on what to talk to my next therapist about.

today is my second month without DOING ANY EFFORT ( both professionally and socially) , i haven't been able to go to class ( im a second year medstudent and it's not necessary to attend in my country ) , exams are coming up and i promised my self to go to a therapist after the exams but i need a quick fix, i feel trapped ( ps : I've been battling alone with depression for many years now, but i managed to stay the " straight A student" i was, even though i always leave work til the last minute but it's getting worse and worse ) ps have a good day ♥

I suffer from the exact things that you mentioned and I'm a third year medical student. unfortunately the attendance is compulsory in my country, so imagine having to go to classes everyday although you know you won't comprehend anything. i intended to ignore the situation for the upcoming three months -same like you, after exams end-. but I knew if the exams came while I'm in this state, it will be a matter of time for me to fail this year and i'd have to repeat it again and seriously that's alone pushed me to reach for help. month ago I booked an appointment to meet with a therapist and currently we're trying to work the situation out. I don't know yet if it's going to be effective or not but at least it's worth trying. have a nice day and if you could, you should seek a professional help.

Random video idea: could you compare and contrast BPD (borderline personality disorder) and RAD (reactive attachment disorder) Love that you are talking about burning out. I definitely felt this way when I had a lot going on at home and went straight to college after graduating high school early. I ended up taking most of the year off and it helped
