Maybe people don't realize that being a therapist is your job, and maybe you love it, but you are not just a therapist, you are much more than that, you are a whole complex human being! So it is completely normal if you want to be among people without being their therapist !!!

I agree. It’s rather quite simple. Example, if you’re an accountant or financial advisor at your job. And then at the end of the day, you leave the office to go home or hang out with your friends at a party, you don’t want people to expect you to do their finances for them simply because it’s what you do for a job. You’re there at the party to enjoy, not to work.

I totally relate to dreading the "what do you do for a living?" lol. As a social worker, I get a lot of "Wow, I couldn't do your job", and a lot of "I'm really worried about a kid because of xyz, should I report it to child services?" My state has mandatory reporting for all people over 18, so usually the answer is yes. And then my pharmacist husband gets all the medical questions and strange rashes shown to him at parties.

Also for music therapists the response from other people is totally different... mostly because people don’t realize that it’s a real thing. So we get “oh! What’s that?” Most people think we just sing to people...😑 My go to answer is “I’m a trained therapist and a trained musician and I studied methods on incorporating the two”

To be honest, I don't think I could do all of it within the deadlines because I am not neurotypical. I wouldn't be able to do full time work and then internships on the side. That is insane. How sad that such a valuable career is so incredibly difficult. On top of that, I can't imagine putting that many years of work to earn so little. Those who can endure are definitely incredible and I am so thankful for those of you that do this line of work- but my heart aches that it is this complicated and that what you earn as a therapist is so meager compared to the work put it. Oi.
@juliejealousy
@juliejealousy 6 жыл бұрын
Rachel Cyders I’m not neurotypical and I’m in school to be a counselor. I live in a different state though. It’s possible. I know that you can complete my grad program in 5 years but full time is 2. And then you need the 3000 hours within 8 years, which is what I read recently. I think it’s possible to do it part time and with boundaries so you can care for your mental health, but that’s just my opinion. I used to be in a way worse place with my mental health and wouldn’t be able to handle it but I’m in a better place now. I hope that things get better for you over time. 💕

Kati Morton Yes, I completely agree. I don't know how, but I deeply hope it changes someday. My interests and skills are both in mental health and teaching, and it's been difficult to make any forwards motion knowing the financial situation either paths would put me into. I don't care to be rich, but I do long to be financially stable enough to support a family of my own someday. I know it's not impossible, but the lack of security freezes me up.
@juliejealousy
@juliejealousy 6 жыл бұрын
Rachel Cyders well my mom is a teacher and she struggles with an anxiety disorder. I actually work in a school as a teacher’s aide and have managed but yes, unfortunately it doesn’t pay well. I think if you truly love something you should strive to do it, but at your own pace of course. It’s nice that a lot of schools offer part time programs for that reason. The teaching route in the states from what I know is a bit easier because the masters program is a lot shorter and you need way less internship hours to become a teacher.

I am not a therapist. Heck, I'm not always the healthiest and need a therapist, but my PTSD makes me quiet and more of a listener than than a talker. This causes people tell me things I am not always able to deal with. I think with the high-speed lifestyle so many people live under, when they find someone who listens, they use that opportunity. That may be why even when you don't tell someone you are a therapist, they are still telling you things. You make a good listener even when not in therapy mode. It may be a bad hypothesis, but it has been something I have noticed around me for years as well.

It weird to say this because you guys are often strangers, but you guys also give off the vibe that makes people feel safe and that you can be trusted. I think that’s why people are so incline to tell you about their problems.

I absolutely LOVE your videos Kati....I like when you said "I'm just like you." Most importantly, I can relate in reference to not always feeling or being in Therapist mode, sometimes you just want to unwind and relax, therefore creating your own boundaries are great in regards to knowing just what you can handle. Since I begin telling people that I am in a Clinical Mental Health Program, I'll have random strangers pour their whole life story out to me, eventhough this is my passion, it can get uncomfortable, because one I'm not fully trained and two it may be a day where I am actually trying to just unwind , eventhough I LOVE helping people, were human 2. Thank you Kati for sharing your expertise with us all, please keep them coming:) I would love for you to add a video demonstrating how to do an assessment for a client (involving diagnoses, recommendations to the client) and and the whole process soon!

Hey kati! I have been dealing with depression and anxiety for years and being home or around my family makes it much worse even though they are not necessarily bad people. They don’t know about my mental issues so when I avoid them they think I’m trying to be a jerk. Because of this, they just so and do things that make it even worse. The worst part about the situation is that the only way I think I could ever get the help I need is through my parents. I can’t even imagine how I Would mention this to them. I have no idea what to do but the longer I wait, the worse it gets, i fear that soon I won’t be able to be helped anymore but I don’t know what to do. I love your videos and they help me so much! Thank you for all of the work you put in every week!

The process is so overwhelming and lengthy but worth it in the end. For me it was undergrad, 3 years in grad school (Pepperdine GSEP), 2.5 years post grad accruing my 3,000 hours, 7 weeks studying for the clinical and recently passed on my first try! Btw now the CA clinical is 170 questions (multiple choice) in 4 hours. Love your videos!!!! You’ve helped me over the last few years grow as a clinician. THANK YOU!!
