At its core, the story of The Hunger Games is about the power of one person to change the world.
Set in the future remnants of the USA in a new nation called Panem, one male and one female "tribute" between the ages of 11 and 18 from each of Panem's twelve districts is forced to participate in an annual competition called the Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol's wealthy residents.
Now, bestselling author Suzanne Collins and the world of The Hunger Games return in her latest addition to the series: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

That. He doesn't get mad or jealous that she has feelings for someone else, but rather cares for those she cares for. Gale's health and well-being here is important to him because it affects Katniss' well-being. And he loves her and wants her to be happy. That's a role model when it comes to loving and caring for someone, if I've ever seen one.

I’ve watched this scene so many times and it affects everyone. Katniss for obvious reasons. Peeta looks devastated but you can tell he’s not even thinking about himself, he’s thinking of Katniss. Haymitch is thinking he has a chance to go back in and he’s thinking of the last Quarter Quell. Prim doesn’t really understand until she sees her family breaking down and Mrs. Everdeen is hysterical because she could lose her eldest daughter again not even a year after she came back plus she has to also be remembering the last Quarter Quell where her childhood best friend was reaped and killed. This scene hits so hard. Peeta’s face is heartbreaking.

In the book, Katniss’s internal monologue mentions that she was only thinking of herself in her grieving of the announcement. Then later she talks to Haymitch and when he tells her that Peeta came to him earlier desperate for him to be the tribute, she realises that while she only thought about herself, Peeta was only thinking about her. And she feels awful for it, how Peeta could be so pure of heart that he only thinks of Katniss and nothing else, desperate to jump into the arena with her to protect her. While she only thought about her own well-being, at least at first. It’s amazing how that got translated onto the screen.

@kevinthunder3375
@kevinthunder3375 4 ай бұрын
@@y0ung5one why? She spent years on her own, feeding her family, practically raising her sister. Gave up her childhood. She doesn't trust easy because she was on her own so long and nobody was there for them. She bottles her emotions because she is used to it and it wouldn't do to show weakness, she has to remain strong for Prim. I'm not sure what people want from her. If you hate Katniss, why read it? I found her to be a very real character and there is a reason she's the hero of the story. If she wanted to, she could have hunted down the other tributes, slaughtering them all like animals, and nobody could have stopped her. Instead, she won her own way, grieving for the other tributes, and even befriended a little 12 year-old. Who does that? Probably the only Tribute in 74 years. It didn't matter where you were from or which district. Town or Seam. They were all in it together. The hatred for her is way overkill. It all seems to boil down to "she manipulated Peeta." Boohoo. Like Finnick implied, Peeta is the only one to be a Victor by chance. Katniss got Peeta home. I like Peeta and I'm glad she chose him but he should have been more grateful. An alliance with him put her at great risk but she did the right thing. But then Haymitch chews her out for being with Peeta, it's like "WTF?" She has bigger things to worry about than teenage romance drama, one of them being a serious case of PTSD. What frustrations? I thought she was at her best in the last book, Mockingjay. She never gave up on Peeta, even after everyone called him traitor and he tried to strangle her. Gale and Coin were ready to execute him. Katniss was a voice of reason in dark times. She was an advocate against crimes against humanity and urged people not to sink to the Capitol's low. Others, like Gale and Coin, were perfectly fine with slaughtering innocent civilians, but Katniss protect life. She wanted to preserve humanity and not lose herself to hatred and petty revenge. So many people wouldn't be alive if it weren't for her and Panem would still be a dictatorship. So yeah, Haymitch was out of line. Katniss went there for Peeta and he treated her like shit. Like he always does. If there is one character who I don't get why people like, it's the drunk who never cared about his tributes. He did get a bit of a redemption arc, though. I do feel his popularity, however, is more because of Woody Harrelson and not the actual character.

@@kevinthunder3375 it seems like you got pretty worked up. I never said I hate katniss. in fact, I like her overall as a main character. she's a pretty balanced character in my opinion. what I meant was *sometimes* I got frustrated with her and can somewhat understand why some people would hate her. in the first games, she did what she had to do to survive with the whole romance thing. now, some people could see that as a manipulation because peeta didn't know about the strategy, he genuinely wanted to protect her and never planned to get out of the arena alive. this also makes sense of his reaction when he found out about the strategy after the games. he was hurt, but even peeta realized that he couldn't hold that against her. this is what those people fail to realize, katniss didn't know that peeta didn't know. she thought he was aware of the strategy and didn't realize his actions were genuine. she didn't realize this because of her distrustful nature like you said. I don't remember haymitch said anything about her being with peeta. I thought his concern was regarding her stunt with the berries that could put her family in danger. it reminded him of his own games when he played with the force field and then got his loved ones killed. about the last book. I like that she held on to her moral compass even after everything and didn't resort to cruelty like gale. I'm also glad that she didn't gave up on rescuing peeta, but the part that frustrated me was the way she treated him after they got him back and realized he was hijacked. I feel like she gave up too quickly after relentlessly defending him. she was so quick to decide his condition was irreversible when others were still trying to fix him. even haymitch was more hopeful than her, and that's saying something. still, this doesn't make me hate her, it's just frustrating to read. you said you don't get why people hate her. to put it simply, there are people out there like johanna mason who thought katniss was unbearable despite her being a good person.

The most important thing to remember is that these characters are not just characters, they represent elements, essences, and parts of human life, society, and the rebellion. Peeta embodies hope. In the book, every time Katniss saw a sign of hope in nature it was a dandelion, which she associated with Peeta. Before he threw her the bread, she was seriously contemplating death over her suffering. But with that bread came a new wave of life, fresh motivation to get up, give the bread to her sister and mother, and live again. He gave her new hope. The line “Peeta has to survive” is not just about Peeta himself, someone Katniss loves, but about what he stands for. Hope. If Peeta dies, so does hope.

Notice about 6:02 that the Capitol audience, which had been cheering, was audibly NOT happy when the "all stars" format was announced! As tragic as it is, that she died in Mockingjay, Prim has in my opinion one of the best character changes in this series. In the beginning, she’s a frightened kid, but she gains strength from seeing her older sister’s courage in the games. so by the time we get to catching fire honestly I think Prim was ready to die if necessary. Obviously it’s something she hoped wouldn’t happen, but it was something she was ready for. In the first movie, she gained strength from Katniss, taking her place and by the second movie in my opinion Prim was ready to die in order for the change in Panam to occur. I love this series. In fact, I just watched Ballad of Songbird and Snakes and I absolutely love that movie as well.

Katniss starts to further away from Gale because she thinks he was way too deep into revenge, hate, chaos and war. The love triangle wasn't Suzzane's idea. Her editors made her do it because Twilight was so popular. I'm glad Suzzane decided to make the love triangle more symbolic. Gale represents righteous anger and fire. He hates the Capitol with a passion and even tried to start a rebellion in the mines. But, his anger leaves him uniquely vulnerable to being groomed. We always question Coin sending a 14 year old girl to the frontlines, but Gale was like...19 at the MOST. But she had him designing weapons & death traps, KNOWING that Gale doesn't fully understand what he's doing. Katniss has killed. She knows the full scope of what that entails, Gale does not. In comparison, Peeta symbolizes hope under oppression. The idea that you can burn us, abuse us but can never take away what's intrinsic to us: Love and Hope. Peeta is the human embodiment of that Dandelion that gave Katniss the idea of foraging & hunting in the woods. He also represents peace.

you probably don’t care, but if you genuinely want to know here’s my essay explaining it because the movies did an absolutely horrible job of showcasing peeta. Like it’s bad. They cut out 80% of his personality and strengths. If you don’t want to read it that’s cool, because it’s going to be long but if you’re curious here it goes. The reason why Katniss wants Peeta to live so badly is because he’s the reason why she’s alive now. The point the movies didn’t showcase at all was that Peeta saved Katniss life so many times, that she feels like she’ll never stop owing him. But Peeta didn’t save her for that reason he did it because he’s genuinely a good person. When they were 11 and Katniss father just died in the mining explosion and her mother felt into a Great Depression which made her emotionally abandon her kids which made them starve, Katniss was dying of hunger and went to the merchant part of town to look through their bins for food. Peeta’s mother is a horrible woman and is abusive and shooed Katniss away and threatened her and called her a bunch of names. Peeta saw this and burnt the bread on purpose and got a beating from his mother for it, Katniss notes that it sounds like Peeta was hit by something metal and he comes out with his face starting to swell and his mother calls him a useless creature and tells him to feed it to the pig because ‘no one decent will eat burnt bread.’ Peeta waits for when his mother is distracted by a customer and quickly throws Katniss 2 loaves of burnt bread. Not just normal bread but the expensive kind filled with extra grains and things added to it and ripping off the burnt parts shows the inside to be good as new. This act saved Katniss, Prim and her mothers life and when Katniss goes into school the next day she sees Peeta is black and blue and his eye is completely swollen shut and she wants to thank him but can’t, Peeta won’t even look at her. Katniss is actually gutted when she hears Peeta’s name being called in the first hunger games, she thinks ‘oh no, not him’ because he did that after of kindness for no benefit of himself and she could never repay him. Then during the games, every single thing Peeta did was to save her over himself and he didn’t do this for anything in return. He just knows her life has more value than his, because he comes from an abusive home and they don’t need him whereas Katniss has a family who adore her and need her to survive. The captiol does like Katniss, but Peeta comes up with the love angle strategy to get more attention on her. It’s clear in the books that Katniss is bad with people, Haymitch gets annoyed at her because of how unlikeable she is and said ‘you have a personality of a dead slug.’ Peeta makes Katniss extra desirable and interesting with his star crossed lovers act to the Capitol since they’re shallow, and he’s the one who gives Katniss that extra attention. This is also cut out movie wise but the first couple of days during the games Katniss is dying of dehydration. She is weak and couldn’t defend herself if someone even pushed her over. Peeta teamed up with the careers deliberately after hearing Katniss got an 11 on training and he knew Katniss would be their number one target because of that. So he made sure to lead the career pack far away from Katniss and told them lies to keep her alive, the only reason the careers and her came into contact was because the gamemakers started the fire after Katniss finally found water and brought them together. The only reason the careers were that far from Katniss in the first place was because of peeta, but he had no control over that fire. Then he gave Katniss time in the tree by saying to wait for her to come down, because she’ll have to come down eventually and stayed awake to watch what Katniss was doing. When Katniss dropped the tracker jacket nest Peeta saved Katniss life again, because of the stings Katniss got she was hallucinating and so out of it that she just sat there after she took the bow from Glimmer, peeta ran back for her and pushed and made her snap out of it and run and then turned around and fought Cato one on one to stop Cato from killing her, which he wouldn’t easily done with Katniss in that state. Peeta sacrificed himself again to keep Katniss alive, and that’s was the reason why he was so injured when she found him later in the first place. Because he did it to save her. The movie has Peeta say that he doesn’t get any sponsors, however what they don’t say that it’s not that he doesn’t get sponsors or parachutes. It’s because Haymitch is giving Peeta’s sponsors to Katniss, because Peeta wants Katniss to live over himself. The movie doesn’t do a good job of showing this but Peeta is popular with the captiol crowd, he has so much personality. He’s extremely charming, funny and snarky and even has Katniss laughing often. People adore him and he’s a good public speaker and is good at playing up the audience, but Haymitch doesn’t send peeta sponsors and sends it to Katniss instead because that’s what he’d rather. So even though Katniss would have sponsors on her own, it likely wouldn’t be enough for the burn medicine because that’s extremely expensive. Then the movies cut out all their bonding moments, the cave scene in the movie is a joke whereas book wise it’s so much different. They’re their for days and even though peeta is dying you can see his personality shine, you can see how charismatic he is and he is flirty and funny and even has Katniss confused with how she’s feeling and makes her forget they’re even in the games for a while. It’s why she’s also so determined to get that medicine int he feast for him, she doesn’t want him to die because she does genuinely really like him. Then there’s more moments in catching fire that’s cut out with then bonding, then get extra close after the victor tour because Katniss breaks her heel and Peeta comes over and helps her and they bond for a while making a plant book together, where peeta paints different plants in her fathers book and she writes information about different edible plants. That’s how they really get to know each other even more as friends. When the quarter quell is announced, peeta takes over. Katniss and Haymitch fall into self pity and get drunk, whereas Peeta’s first goal was to save both of them over himself. He guilt trips Haymitch into saving Katniss because he owes him, and then throws out all of Haymitch’s alcohol and threatens them to get a grip because they can’t afford to sit around getting drunk when they are going to work on having 2 of them survive. That’s when he goes into personal trainer mode, the movies cut out how he’s also a wrestler and is great at hand to hand combat. This is something Katniss says in the first book, he’s the 2nd best wrestler in the district after his brother. So he creates a training program and forces Katniss and Haymitch to train like careers for months. Makes them exercise, eat well and even orders all the victors hunger games tapes and watches a couple of them every night and takes notes on each victors strategies. He’s the reason why they know so much about past victors, not Haymitch explaining them and he even gets Katniss to ask Gale to help teach them snares and traps. Peeta is the reason why Katniss is extra skilled and top of her game during the second games. So basically the reason why Katniss is so determined for Peeta to survive over herself is because she thinks he deserves it over her, that both her and Haymitch owe Peeta to save him this time since they both put all their energy into saving her in the first games. She sees herself as a lost cause since she has caused so much trouble, and Peeta is a good person who deserves to live more than anyone. She also thinks Peeta is perfect for the leader of the rebellion because he is so good at public speaking and moving the crowd with his words and he’d do more for a rebellion than she could.

@@Shelly-cp7gj you’re welcome! I forgot I wrote this essay but I’m glad that you liked it! I love the movies of course, but I think it’s why for years people had the wrong impression of peeta especially, I’ve seen people call him boring, weak or useless when none of that is close to true. Another detail if you’re interested is that Peeta is also an amputee, peeta loses his left leg after the first games and had to get it amputated it was that badly damaged. So he has a prosthetic leg for the rest of the series. It’s why he struggles and needs help in catching fire with running away from the fog, because he’s barley had a fake leg for a year so isn’t fully used to it and has to run in an arena filled with vines which is prosthetic kept getting caught in since he can’t feel it. It’s quite a big thing to miss, and would’ve been cool to see a main character have a disability like that but I guess it would be hard for them to show that.

“Peeta has to survive” from Katniss was kind of a meaningless bit of pseudo character development to me. Why, exactly? Peeta doesn’t hold a ton of significance in the eyes of the revolutionary forces or the common people. Sure, he’s a “better person” than basically any other character but that doesn’t mean much in terms of the storytelling or the driving forces in their world. He doesn’t have much in the way of family or social standing compared to the other main characters. Again…why, particularly, does Peeta *have to* survive?

Because she is in love with Peeta by this point but isn't willing to admit it. It would be far too painful to let herself be that vulnerable with her feelings after all that shes been through. Its easier for her to find other ways to justify her actions when her love for him is influencing them. In this moment I think she's justifying it by thinking similarly to how she was thinking when she volunteered for Prim or protected Rue. She doesn't want innocent and good people dying.
